I had 15 mature eggs, ICSI was preformed on all of them and 6 out of the 15 were damaged during the ICSI procedure. To me that seems like quite a high number to have been damaged considering ICSI is recommend to couples with a low number of mature eggs retrieved to help ensure fertilization. Is it normal for that many to be damaged from ICSI?

Sounds high but we didn't do ICSI so I didn't look into it in detail. I just wanted to say that I am sorry that it turned out that way. I hope someone else has answers for you and I hope that you end up with some fantastic embryos!

Did the clinic tell you that the eggs were specifically damaged by ICSI?

What clinic are you at? Although there is a very small chance of ICSI causing damage, this does not normally happen (at all) with competent embryologists. However ICSI does not guarantee fertilization, and it is definitely possible that 6 out of 15 might not have fertilized with ICSI.

Hi returnable and SunshineTTC, when the lab called and told me 6 out of the 15 didn't make it I asked the reason why and the woman explained several reasons to me why eggs don't 'make it' after ICSI, one of the reasons being that they were damaged from ICSI and I was told that was the case with my 6 that didn't make it. It does seem like such a high number to have been damaged by the procedure considering specialists specifically will recommend ICSI to couples who only have a small number of eggs after retrieval to help ensure they get fertilized, but if the damage rate is that high it wouldn't make sense for them to do that. I'm glad I have 9 embryos but I can't help but be upset that 40% of my eggs were damaged right off the bat since there's no telling how many out of the ones left are going to develop properly and come back normal after CCS.

I have had ICSI done and had none damaged - but I'm old and my eggs may be have been harder/tougher for sperm to penetrate. Is it possible that your eggs, or this batch in particular, are somehow more permeable/fragile and therefore more prone to this sort of damage?
