I am just finishing up my second round of IUI at the clinic. This time was a bfn...again. My husband and I are in disbelief. It has been three years of ttc and now two IUIs later we are no closer to being prego. We are not sure what to do next. Should we try another IUI or should we go for IVF. :icon_cry: My husband’s sperm is a little slow, but other than that, we’re undeterminedly infertile. Any advice anyone? Thanks.

Welcome there!

I'm so sorry about negative results. Have you done medicated or unmadicated IUI? Usually RE's recommend couple of IUI's before IVF. What does your RE say?

Welcome 2bamama

I can't really really suggest anything but my DH and I will be doing our 1st IVF. We didn't try an IUI cycle. The odds are better with the IVF so thats what we are doing.
Wish you the best of luck.

I have been taking Clomid, but thus far with not great results. The size and amount of eggs has not been great. How much is the procedure of IVF. Is there much of a difference as far as time needed to go through it all? I have a medical plan, but, of course, these types of procedures are not covered. Has anyone out there been in the same boat at Conceptia?

Hi there,
My clinic recommends 3 rounds of IUI before trying ivf. They try to do the less evasive treatment and go more aggressive each time. I did iui and ivf now. no luck with iui but am PG now with my first round of ivf. I was unexplained and finally did an lapro last Oct and found my tubes were damaged thus they recommended doing ivf knowing that.

If your DH's sperm is low, wouldn't ivf be better for you??

At my clinic IUI was an average of $1500 (most drugs were covered, sperm wash was not and wash was &700) and ivf was abour $12600 including icsi and meds. Then an additional $800 for embryo freezing or an yr. Since my tubes were damaged, I saved $2000 with OHIP.

Good luck!

Hi 2bamama: I see we are both from Saint John. Hi Neighbor. We did 4 cycles at Conceptia this summer/fall. We are using donor sperm, as I have a DW. We did 2 unmedicated and 2 with clomid. The next step after clomid is usually injectibles. We are moving to the clinic we had our son (Montreal Fertility) at because Conceptia has a 4 follicle limit (my son was a 5 follicle cycle), and I can make 4 follicles on Clomid. Injectibles would up your odds if you haven't reached 4 follicles. If you have IVF, you would certainly up your odds. I can't afford IVF, so we will be doing injectibles in Montreal this summer. Feel free to Private message me if you want to talk about Conceptia and your options. I have asked them almost every question possible when cycling.

Breaking until Summer 2008 going to Montreal Fertility Centre for IUI with Injectible.

Thank you so much for the information. It is nice to know some people in the same boat.
Catherine, what are injectables? I must admit I'm feeling a little unknowledged about all of this stuff. Also, what is meant by a 4 folicule limit? I really want to have some information when I return to the clinic.

Thanks.

Injectibles are gonatropin medicine that you inject to make more follicles instead of taking pills. They work better but are more expensive. And at conceptia the monitoring price goes way up for IUI injectible monitoring from $250 with clomid to $900 for injectibles monitoring. You will get more follicles with injectibles. They have a 4 follicle limit for IUI at conceptia, meaning if you have more than 4 follicles you either get cancelled or have to have a reduction procedure at your expense. I wouldn't do injectible there because I can make 4 folllicles on clomid. I never got pg with 4 or less follicles. When I got pg with my son, I was in Montreal and had 5 follicles.
Where in SJ are you? We are in the east end. I am a supply teacher in the school district.
If you want more info on IVF. You might to look for Sara on the the pg board oct due date. She just got pg there from IVF and she is from Quispamsis.

2bamama-Sorry hear that your IUI resulted in a bfn. Back in Dec '06, I attempted an IUI but it was cancelled due to that fact I ovulated to early in my cycle. I've been on clomid for a long time before that & it did nothing for me. We met with Dr.R & he told us the pros & cons of both IUI & IVF. We decided to try IVF. Our chances were higher & they could control & watch my cycle more closely. With IUI the success rate is so much lower no matter were you go. I'm now pregnant on my 2nd attempt of IVF.

This is just my opinion, but I would try IVF. I know its a big commitment & much more expensive then IUI but its more successful. Are you & dh meeting with Dr.R to discuss your options? If you ever need info on IVF or meds I would gladly help you out. I think Conceptia is a wonderful clinic & always felt I was treated well. There are 4 main doctors there, I had everyone for either an U/S, ER or ET. They treated me with respect & always showed or told me what was going on during a procedure.

I'm almost done at the clinic when I have my 8 week U/S next week. Now I'll have to find an ob/gyn in SJ soon.

Good luck

Sara

I went through 4 IUI's which were all bfn's. Then on my first IVF I got a bfp (sadly ended in m/c) and on my FET I also got a bfp (currently pregnant).
So, for me, the difference between IUI and IVF was significant. I would recommend you try IVF.

Good Luck!!!!

I did 3 iuis that were perfect on paper all BFN.
My first IVF was a BFN and my FET was BFP.

I had limited insurance coverage for drugs ... $6000.
The last IUI was gonal-F and used up 1500. Basically I didn't want to waste coverage on a 20% success
chance at best.

also because I was unexplained I kind of felt .... if this was gonna work we would have been able do it on our own.

anyway just my experience... that being said it works for lots of women.. Keep in mind on this site there is more women doing IVF sooo the responses you get may be a little one sided!

Good Luck!

I'm in the same scenario as Bal.

4 IUI's all perfect, but BFNs...

3 Fresh IVFs, My first was a BFP but ended in an Ectopic, but my second frozen was a BFP. Just goes to show you that IVF does work!

I would not have gone the IUI road if I had more information about IVF. It may cost more, but when you get a BFP, you won't think of the price you paid.

We were unexplained and did two rounds of IUI.
I know how frutrating it is.
We too - were closing in on three years.
It is such an emotional rollercoster.

Our first IVF and we got pregnant.
I have a nineteen month old daughter to prove it.
and Now - I got pregnant naturally!

I recommend you start IVF.
Good Luck in whatever you choose.

Well, One more it was. We have gone and now my dreaded, evil, ugly and any other terrible adjective you can think of Aunt Flow has come to visit again. We were, at best, pessimistic about it working. The Nurse said that everyone tries it three times. I'm not so sure that is the case, but being a pleasant person, I did it anyway. <_< It is no big surprize that it is a negative. Of course I am telling myself this because the last time around I was completely and utterly crushed and depressed for over a month. I couldn't even look at a baby without holding back tears. Plus it was my birthday last month. Another year gone by and here I am 31 and nothing to show for it... and here I am rambling.

Let me know if this sounds strange or not: I have alway known that IVF will be the way to go. Even before my HB and I started to "try" I knew that I would not be able to conceive natuarally. I always thought that Invitro would have to be the way. I'm not sure if that sounds crazy or not. Has anyone else out there had an idea that they would not be able to have children the old fashioned way? Call it woman's intuition or whatever.

Sorry so ranty.
