Be careful with the decaf coffee. It should be swiss water decaf (which is sold in a lot of grocery stores now, and Shoppers Drug Mart in our area sells it - I live in Burlington, ON). If it's not swiss water decaf, the coffee bean is decaffinated through a chemical process and could be worse than drinking caffiene.

Also... probably goes without saying these days, but watch out with drinking out of plastic. It needs to be BPA-free (older Nalgene bottles for examples are a "don't")

Make sure you're taking B12, DHA, a probiotic (a HMF-based one) and getting Omegas 3 & 6. Another supplement to think about it methylcolbamin (helps with liver functioning and gets rid of extra hormones), but it was recommended to me by a naturopathic doctor at a preparing for pregnancy workshop I went to. Other recommendations:

- don't be focussing on losing weight when trying to conceive
- Helath Canada apparently recommends no fish for pregnant women due the toxicity
- she recommended no seafood, catfish, tilapia or salmon; smaller sized fish like perch and sole should be the choices if you are going to eat fish
- detox 3 months before TTC (I know - we are all past this, but here are the recommendations): no gluten, dairy, processed food, eggs, peanuts, beef, pork, sausage, sugar, alcohol, coffee, tea; during the detox do eat: organic produce, chicken, turkey, fish (but no canned fish), beans, nuts (raw & unsalted), rice, oatmeal, honey, maple syrup (pure), water, herbal tea

- don't drink soy milk (I think the rationale is that too much so impacts on fertility. Has anyone else heard anything about this?)

- be careful with cleaning products - use all natural products (there's lots of info. on-line about things like vinegar & lemons that can act as cleaners); also clean your house of pollutants

- pre-transfer- castor oil packs can be help; again info. is on-line about this

Once you are pregnant (let's all send our positive vibes to each other that this WILL happen for all of us!!!!):

eat: limited fish, no raw cheese, no seafood, no organ meats, no alcohol, no chocolate, no green tea, eliminate or reduce junk food, cut down on sugar, eat 5 - 10 servings of greens per day, eat 3 - 5 servings of protein per day, eat organic as much as possible, take 2 tbsp. ground flax seed per day, and have 5 small meals per day
Supplements: Pre-natal vitamin (the veg. capsule ones are better than the hard ones like Materna as they get absorbed more easily; make sure it has folic acid, iron, vit. D and calcium in it)Folic Acid >1mg, DHA >1000mg, methylcobalmin 10mg

Hope this is helpful!

- Helath Canada apparently recommends no fish for pregnant women due the toxicity
- she recommended no seafood, catfish, tilapia or salmon; smaller sized fish like perch and sole should be the choices if you are going to eat fish

Where did you get this information? No fish at all?? Who is the "she" that recommends these points?

I found this on the Health Canada website:

http://www.hc-sc.gc..../omega3-eng.php

From the above site:
Experts agree that fish can contribute to a healthy diet during pregnancy (UK Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition, 2005; European Food Safety Authority, 2005; IOM, 2007; Kris-Etherton et al, 2007). The benefits of eating fish are greater than not eating fish, when pregnant women2 choose the recommended types and amounts (IOM, 2007).

Women who eat fish while pregnant give their growing fetus important nutrients. Fish is a unique choice among the Meat and Alternatives food group because of its fat profile; compared to other choices, fish is generally lower in saturated fats and higher in the long chain polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Fish also contains high quality protein and other essential nutrients: vitamins (such as vitamin D and choline) and minerals (such as selenium, iodine, iron, zinc and copper). (See table 1.)

...

Health Canada recommends that women continue eating at least 150 grams (5 ounces) of cooked fish each week during pregnancy, as recommended in Canada's Food Guide. Health Canada also suggests that women pay special attention to the types of fish they eat. Since many pregnancies are unplanned, the advice presented in this document also applies to all women of childbearing age, including breastfeeding women.

Women should choose the types of fish that generally have low levels of contaminants, such as salmon, trout, herring, haddock, canned light tuna, pollock (Boston bluefish), sole, flounder, anchovy, char, hake, mullet, smelt, Atlantic mackerel and lake white fish.

Avocados are supposed to be very good for you too! They are high in Folic Acid and Vitamin B and they also help lower Cholestrol. And Kiwis are also supposed to be helpful for fertility as they are very high in Vitamin C.

I'd like to add two more things, take it or leave it:

Small UK based study showed that women who laughed for 15 minutes following their transfer had higher implantation rates than their non-laughing counterparts. They used a clown/mime routine for the study, but the sample was too small for it to be considered a valid study. So I would load up your phone with a comedy routine or have your partner do a little stand up or something. If it doesn't help, can't hurt, we always joke right after transfer and so far we have 100% implantation rates (too bad it does not translate into as many babies).

Second and mainly for FET, I've read it could help to have um, sexual intercourse around ER and above all around ET, because the chemicals in sperm trigger a "get ready for pregnancy" response. I am sure there is a "no intercourse" rule for after ER, so that would have to be before that in a regular IVF cycle and I have no idea where this one came from. As far as I know it could have been started by a husband who just wanted to get some. But again, if you are up to it, it can't hurt.

I am not going to add the obvious or what others have added. I read people giving advice on certain natural meds to take. Do not take anything without Dr's advice. NOTHING! No herbs, nothing. People were talking about melatonin, and it is a natural thing, but it causes hormonal issues and can actually stop ovulation and mess with your cycle. Google MELATONIN+FERTILITY. I am not a Dr, but some of these natural things, just because they are natural does not mean they are good for you. And it would be awful if someone risked a 1.5 month process plus over $10 000 and their time and heart to do this, and to take something that may ruin it would be awful. So take no advice from anyone except your Dr and PLEASE do not take natural anything without advising your RE.

I wholeheartedly agree...instead of considering this thread to be "wonderful" etc., I think it is dangerous and promotes fear. When people are desperate they will try anything. There is legitimate, scientifically based advice mentioned here, or advice which is harmless and then there is some where I actually laughed out loud or shook my head. I'm sure many couples/women have been successful not because of what they did or did not do, but in spite of it. As Abb said...please talk to your Dr and flush out the good from the wacky. They are the experts....do you seriously believe everything you read just because it's on the internet??

Hello, this is my first post on this forum but clearly I should have visited early given the supportive vibes and encouragement I am hearing. Thank you for that. I have found the entire experience with my clinic to be exceptionally negative. I have found the care to be horrible, emotionally disconnected, and I have recieved so little information. I hear everyone using acronyms for som many items (I have no idea what anyone is talking about). I have started my first IVF treatment / flare cycle - baseline ultrasound said 8 folicles (dont know if this is good or bad). I feel like I am walking into no mands land or no womans land in this case and feel terribly uninformed. I am now madly trying to read as much as I can but it is just stressing me out. Oh well - trying to just have faith and continue to eat healthy, follow the injection schedule and keep positive. What should I expect with the stimulation treatment? I am hearing that ovaries get as big a large florida grapefruits and that mood will be crazy. Other collegue who did IVF and was successful said I should take 2 weeks off during the whole process. Not realistic for me however. Any tips would be great. thx
<p>TTC 5 yrs - me 42 / him 42. Hello Amethyst,
I have had a hard time with the clinics as well. The one I am at now is better then the previous one but still..there are so many people in and out the door and they are so busy its almost impossible for them to be as emotionally supportive as you would like them to be. That is why I joined this forum.
I hope that you have found a group within this site to help support you through the process. I have found an IVF group of woman going through it in June and July...that way we can really support each other as we go through it.
Good luck!

Everyone is different - there's no way to say. I had zero physical side effects - just a couple of crying fits, but nothing unbearable. Your ovaries will not necessarily get that swollen - it's a "possible" side effect and hopefully it won't happen as from what I understand, that could be one of the symptoms of being overstimulated. I felt great, continued with all of my regular routines and only took 2 days off post transfer, when in reality I could have easily went back to work (my job is low stress, low activity). Again....everyone is different, but don't automatically think your symptoms will be severe.

Godd luck!

I didn't read all of the posts in this thread so maybe this was already discussed ... anything that increases blood flow to the reproductive organs (before and during ovulation but NOT during luteal phase) will help improve egg quality. Castor oil packs, femoral massage, abdominal massage, yoga, core strength excercises, deep breathing excercises.

Wondering if anyone has any advice on doing hot yoga? I know that saunas, hot tubs, water beds, electric blankets are all off limits because of excess heat; if one's core body temperature and heart rate go above a certain level it can be detrimental to developing gametes. Since the last 70 days or so of development are the most crucial for producing quality eggs and we are starting our first cycle this weekend ... I've kind of talked myself out of it. I'll stick to regular yoga and core strength excercises to be on the safe side.

Regarding the do's and dont's, I followed EVERYTHING I possibly could for a while which was a sudden and radical change. All the conflicting information out there didn't help either. It became overwhelming, all-consuming obsession Posted Image Not good! Eventually I had to pare down the list, choose the things that seemed the most beneficial and let go of the rest.

Best of luck to everyone!
OTH

Yes the thread has become way too long and since I started it so many things have changed ,specially the attitude of the drs towards other therapies along with conventional one ,lots of research has been done and on going
So please ask your Re's about yoga ,diet ,exercise ,homeopathy, etc if they are open about it

How do you prepare the pineapple? I have never heard of this?
This has been very helpful, thanks.

I would just buy fresh pineapple, use a big knife to cut off the outside (skin?) and then slice it into rounds. I read that it is the core that is most beneficial. And if you eat the core with the rest of the piece it doesn't taste too bad. Pick a pineapple that smells sweet at the bottom because then it will be ripe - they don't ripen any more after being picked. I would eat 2-3 slices a day.

I was told by a previous doctor to only drink skim milk because of the estrogen feeding my endo.
Me: Stage II Endometriosis 25yo
Him: Normal but at sea 2/3 of the year 30yo

I had two laproscopic surgeries for endo. I've had two miscarriages both soon after surgery, from natural cycles and within days of testing positive. I've also had two failed IUI. We've been TTC for about two years now and I will be having IVF for the first time in June 2012. Neither of us have children. I am also in acupuncture.

My DH took all the vitamins the Dr. recommended, stopped taking baths & saunas, exercised, quit smoking, & his motility improved from almost nothing to "good"!
Me: 39 DH: 41

TTC since Sept. 2008
Nov. 2009 - DH - motility and morphology issues
Dec. 2009/Jan. 2010 Clomid, Ovidrel, & IUI - I react horribly to Clomid, stick it through - produce 2 follies
mid Jan - BFP!!! Can't believe it!!
Feb. 14. 2010 - M/C...not a Happy Valentines Day - I am devastated to lose this little one
April 2012 - start TTC again; FSH is 18 plus right tube looks blocked DR is concerned
May 2012 - DH numbers have drastically improved!!! Vitamins/exercise/no heat all paid off
May 2012 - my FSH is 15 - IUI is cancelled; fearful I will not have any eggs - I'm devastated - first time it was him, now me?
meet with DR - do AMH test (supposed to be more accurate than FSH) decide to do IUI irregardless of FSH #'s although DR thinks I won't respond
May 2012 - Have 2 acupuncture treatments
June 16 2012 - day 3 start of 200 ml Puregon
June 21 - swelling in hands, feet, breasts, & abdomen - severe pain go to ER - cyst burst
June 22 - u/s & blood work - I am responding (yay!), but no sign of over-stimulation; told to take dose of Puregon
June 22 - clinic calls & tells me my E. numbers look too high - they are afraid I'm overstimulating told to not take next dose
June 23 - u/s & blood work - four follies but all on right side; sono showed blockage but laproscopy 4 years ago showed both clear
June 24 - Ovidrel shot @ 10 pm
June 25 - packing my bags to go to TO for IUI in am! a bit of cramping from Ovidrel but nothing too serious
June 26 - IUI at 11 am - three follies 11, 17, & 19 - E2 levels good - DH's numbers good -
June 27 - the dreaded TWW begins... I'm already going crazy & its only day 1
July 11 - Beta is negative... sniff sniff... round 2 begins...
July 12 - start taking natural supplements - Royal Jelly, frozen Wheatgrass Juice, CoQ10
July 15 - day 3 of AF start stimming again same dose of Puregon - FSH has dropped - 11 this time
July 20 - two follies 15 and 16 both on right side :-( - on the plus side no crazy swelling this round - just some bloating & some emotional outbursts
July 21 - trigger tonight with IUI on Monday....
Aug 8 - Negative again - Round 3 - It does feel like a boxing ring & I do feel like I've just been knocked down. I'm so sad.
Aug 10 - day 3 u/s - 3 follies - two on left (11 & 12)!!!! one on right (12)... I hope hope hope the left side matures...started stimming today. FSH is now 8.5 with normal E2 numbers! It has continually dropped!
Aug. 17 - IUI number 3...left follie 2.1 - right 1.7 - DH's numbers normal & best they've ever been. Surged on my own so no trigger. Could this be the month?
Sept. 3 - BFN... heartbreak - RE wants us to move to IVF, but I need to take some time to get my spirit back.

Hey all,

This is my experience and what I learnt. Been married for 7 yrs with 3 yrs of TTC. All what the Gynecs did was to experiment on me and evaluate my condition. Except for a few lbs overweight, all tests were normal [Thyroid, BSL, HSG, Ovulation Study etc.]. Finally, in the SA my DH's motility was found to be poor. He literally "ate" pills - all kinds of them - Allopathic, Ayurvedic, Herbal... Yet, the count kept going up and down, unsteadily.

Both of us began to exercise - I worked out daily on our Cross trainer from mid 2012 and watched my diet. We reduced eating out and I stopped sweets and chocolates completely (a big sacrifice). I made my own vegetarian diet plan of about 1500-1700 cals.

My learnings:

  • Daily exercise - come what may, get some exercise everyday (be it cardio, yoga or a leisurely walk to keep the rhythm). Meditation helps.
  • No smoke; no alcohol (settle in for an occasional wine)
  • Eat small meals. Stop overloading on meat (esp, red meat) and fatty foods. Enjoy chicken, eggs and fish without much oil. Have fresh salads, sprouts, lentils and legumes.
  • Avoid fruit juices and go for whole fruits everyday. Take flax seed (powder) or pumpkin seeds, unsweetened lemon juice and meet the sweet cravings with dry fruits (dates, apricots, figs, raisins) and nuts (Soaked almonds, pistachios and walnuts). A piece of dark chocolate everyday cannot harm (GP's advice). No sweets and fatty foods after 1 o'clock.
  • No trans fats at all.
  • Make you DH/partner also eat good food and get some work out.
  • Eliminate stress. Ask Stress to come to you only when you need it!!!
  • Get ideal sleep and rest.
  • Be happy!

[My RE's advice] Before you start your IVF cycle, ask your doctor about exercise. I mean vigorous exercise. With his approval hit a gym and get a professional trainer and start working out 2-3 months before the cycle. Acupuncture is said to be good to increase blood flow to the uterus.

Frequent doctor visits and treatment plans used to pull me down. I used to be unhappy, my face broke out and had dark circles. Anxiety has not left me yet. But, I am hopeful my learnings would come in handy for some of you. :)

Enjoy each day !

Me: 30 yrs DH: 34 yrs

Ovulation regular; Male Factor (fluctuating motility and poor count)
