Hi :D

I am currently getting a referral to either Calgary or Burnaby. I have been going to the Edmonton Regional Fertility Clinc for unsucessfull IUI cycles. We decided we would like to go straight to IVF as we believe it is our best chance!

I talked today with a nurse from the clinic and she recommended Burnaby over Calgary, simply beacause of the wait time, which is apparently less in Burnaby. I have pretty much made up my mind and decided to go woth PCRM. I am wondering what all of your experiences have been like. What was you wait from referral? Does anone know there sucess rate? I emailed the clinic to ask these questions and am hoping for a response soon, but you never know!

Anyone with any info would be great, and put me at ease with my decision!

Sorry, but i am not yet familiar with the abbreviations! Please bare with me!

meemee welcome and sorry you have to be here too,
well i only have experience with heartland and foothills
foothills is great with straight forward easy cases ,but not so with complicated ones ,they do not do enough testing either ,even though you ask them to,secondly there is never any one to attend your call so you leep on leaving messages and then they return your call if they want to tne next day ,twice my dh(dear hubby)had to page the dr on call
but while you are actively cycling they are very nice at the clinic and do return your calls immidiately ,except for 2 times mentioned above
also as soon as you get a positive urine test for preg ,you are kicked out no body will answer anything you have to take it with your family dr and then ob/gyn
i had early misscarriages with ivf with them and since the first u/s (i am an u/s techso scanned really early before 4 weeks) i knew some thing was wrong but the clinic did not listen they were only interested in the positive preg test so they can put it in there stats and brag about there high success rate
if they had done the beta (blodpreg test)it had shown that there was some thing wrong
also when i asked why it happened they said we dont know ,you got preg and thats all we do ,talk to your fam dr ,now i know it was either chromosomal (that we asked them to check but they refused)or immunologic reasons (that they do not check for)
i've heared they are good if you have endometriosis or pcod
good luck
you can find abbreviations on subforum introductons

Hi Meemee,

We are in the same situation as you....deciding between Foothills and PCRM. I have been trying to do "lot's of research", but it still leaves us undecided. I have a friend you had sucessful IVF at Foothills, and she was very happy for the most part. She also said, like Hopeful123 that once you get a positive preg test that is the last they want to see of you. I also heard that if you get a negitave test, they are not very compassionant about things. I have been told that PCRM has a better "bedside manner". I am not sure if this information will help you, but I thought I would let you know. We are probably going to choose PCRM, and the shorter wait time is what helped us decide.
Take Care!

Hi, We dealt with the Edmonton clinic first before deciding to do IVF.

Going to Burnaby was never presented as an option to us, so we just went with Foothills. I've had both a negative and a positive cycle with them and for the most part I found them really nice to deal with. The always having to leave messages and wait for them to call you back is a bit of a pain, but they always returned my calls relatively promptly.

With my negative test, they were actually pretty compassionate, more compassionate than I was used to getting from the staff in Edmonton. With my positive, I called and told them and then they called back with suggested dates for my first ultrasound and the dates for when I would stop taking the Estrace and Prometrium that you take to support a pregnancy. They also like to know how many you're carrying, so I think the ultrasound results were faxed to them, but that's it. That's the last I've heard from them. I've been seeing an Ob/Gyn ever since. I haven't felt the need to deal with Foothills either.

As for follow-up care, if you do cycle with Burnaby and you live in Edmonton I don't know how much you would want to do them afterward anyway, just because it would be more convenient here. Is Burnaby going to be working with the Edmonton clinic they way Foothills does? (i.e. being able to go here for ultrasounds, bloodwork, etc?) The wait-list at Foothills is fairly long (we had our info session at the end of April '06 and I started my first cycle with them at the beginning of August of that year), but we probably would have stayed with Foothills anyway just because of the higher costs associated with going to Burnaby.

I've had a very positive experience with Foothills. It's true you have to leave messages but they've always called me back within 24 hrs. With my 1st cycle there was a lot of miscommunication btw. the local clinc here and Foothills, and using me as a go between. It became very frustrating and costly as I had to switch my flights several times. The clinic here offered me no support or apologies. The nurse at Foothills listen to me cry on the phone and was very compassionate. She had Dr. Greene call me back within an hour, and he refunded me all of the money I had lost on flight changes which was over 1000$. They didn't follow the PG past when I stopped progesterone, but they did call me after I had ds to follow up (for stats purposes of course).

My 2nd cycle did not go well. I had a low beta, and ended with a neg. I again found the staff very supportive.

3rd cycle- we're expecting twins! I haven't heard from them since I stopped the progesterone, but I'm fine with that. The fert. specialist here follows me.

I think everyone has different experiences with the same clinic. I know a lot of people find the clinic here great- but I had a difficult time with them. Although this past cycle has been much better. Perhaps we're just adjusting to one another

I'm just very grateful to the Drs. and specialists and the Good Lord who gave them the gift to do what they do.

Good luck to you all.

Hi all!!

Thank you for your replies, they helped!! The nurse from the Edmonton clinic called this afternoon to hear our decision. We are going with PCRM. Exciting stuff! Now we play the waiting game. It's nice to hear about everyones experiences. Just knowing we are not alone in this...by a long shot! helps me get through it a little easier!!

I will keep everyone posted. I would like to continue to hear how everyone else is doing as well :D

Hi,

We just currently decided to go to PCRM. I spoke with Taryn there (what a sweetheart she is) and she told me that they could probably squeeze us in for the September cycle (ER would be at the end of October). We have, however, decided to wait for the next cycle, so it looks like we will be in Burnaby at the end of November.

I just wanted to let you know this because we are from Edmonton and had initially decided to go to Calgary. After a long conversation with both my DH and the PCRM clinic, we decided to change clinics. So, expect to be getting your phone call any day. They are pretty quick over there :) Good luck to you, I look forward to watching your progress.

Hi,

Thats SUPER fast is'nt it! The nurse i talked to at the Edmonton clinic said to expect a phone call as early as the end of September. I have to have one more test done before they will take me as a patient. The Entrafollicular count. (I think i spelled that wrong!) I know im good with that so we just might get in soon also. What a great feeling. I honestly expected to wait until Nov/Dec. I will keep you posted with my progress. Can't wait to see how your progress goes as well. Good luck!! ;)

Hello!

On Friday I let Edmonton know that we would like to go to PCRM also. They were going to send out a referral, but realized they forgot a blood test for me (CBC), so now we are waiting on that.
Looking forward to possibly meeting some of you at PCRM SOON!
Take care! Keep in touch!

I hope they can get you guys in for the September cycle. If not, maybe we will all cycle together for the October cycle. I still have to have the antral follicle count done, too. Mine would be done in the middle of September, but the girl at PCRM still seemed to think she could get me in using that cycle. We have just chosen, for personal reasons, to wait one more cycle. I'm so excited, I just can't believe that it's finally going to happen!!!! Let's all keep in touch and share our experiences. I wish you the best of luck.

Hi

Yes. I have done 2 failed IVF cycles with PCRM. I had a baby in 2006 through IVF with a different clinic.

Also, do you mind me asking, are these cycles current (2007?) or prior to having your baby in 2006?

Foothills has the best success rates and i know a few people who have had failed attempts and go over to foothills and have success.

Hi all, I was wondering what is different with Foothills?

If you have been to other clinics before going to Foothills, do you have a different protocol? I'm very curious to know of any differences people know about between Foothills and the clinic they went to????

How can one clinic be so much more successful than any other in the entire Country?? Why wouldn't the other clinics use their protocol/methods if their success rate is so much better than anywhere else??

Any info would be appreciated. I'm very curious.

PCRM has indicated to me that their sucess rates are pretty much equal to Foothills. PCRM has only been open for about a year, so of course there stats may be lower.
Up until now I have heard nothing but good information on PCRM (and Foothills also).
I do believe that everyone has their own opinions (and is entitled to them), and we should each choose a clinic based on our own personal thoughts, feelings and opinions.
We have decided to go to PCRM, but I do appreciate the comments about the inexperience. We are very comfortable with our decision. This is a decision we have thought long and hard about. We have decided that this is the clinic we are going to put our trust and hope into, for the chance to be parents.

Have you got your call yet? When was your referral sent to PCRM? I feel confident in our decision, as well. I hope you hear from them soon.

Andiy,

I had not heard anything as of this morning, so I called Edmonton and left a message on the nurses line (just checking to make sure they received the results of the blood work from 3 weeks ago and to make sure they sent the referral to PCRM).
When they called me back they indicated that yes, they got the results, but they still had not sent the referral. They are waiting for the doctor to dictate the letter (?) and they will call me back as soon as it is sent. I am quite disappointed, but I sure am glad I called.
I bet you are sooooooo exited and cannot wait for October 2nd! Did they indicate if they will start in October too or wait for November? I guess that would put you in Burnaby in December.....?????
I will let you know when I hear something back. I am soooo excited for you!
Take Care!

Thank you for your excitement, we are really looking forward to getting things moving. They wouldn't tell me what cycle they expected to get me in on. She said that a nurse will phone me shortly (within two weeks) after the consult to give me dates, etc. Unfortunately, if they want me there in December, I will have to put it off for another month. It would put me right between Christmas and New Years the way my cycle falls. I know that there is absolutley no way I would get that time off work this late in the year. But, I am okay with that. I'm just so happy that things are happening.

I sure hope that letter gets done soon for you. The only reason that mine went so quick was because they had already sent my referral to Calgary. They just had to have the Dr look it over and then send it off to Burnaby. Here's hoping it happens this week for you. I got the call for the consult the day after Edmonton sent my referral, so things move pretty quick once they get your paperwork. Good luck to you, I look forward to watching your journey!!!!

Hi everybody!

I haven't been on in a while. It's nice to see everyone sharing there honest opinions. The anticipation i feel not only for myself but for all of you as well! I was referred to PCRM at the end of august. My phone consult is booked for this tuesday Sep.11. I'm sure most of you know but some people may not realize that you can do a 'Self Referral' to PCRM. Although it sounds like all of us have been referred by our Docs. PCRM does recommend Doctors referral's because of the history they have on file, as well as all of the blood work that is necessary. I based my decision on the waiting time as well as the other personal experiences i have heard. Although PCRM is relatively new, it apparently has one of the most Technologically advanced IVF clinics in Canada. Calgary also has an excellent reputation and success rate. What it came down to was the waiting time..just like all of you i want it to happen sooner than later!!!

Anyway...as i am writing down questions i would like to ask the Doc during our phone consult, i am wondering if anyone has any questions they think are important to ask. Assuming we all think of similar basic questions, can anyone give me a few questions to ask that you consider the MOST IMPORTANT? I don't want to hang up the phone and think...OH NO i forgot to ask....!!! I have done that before!!

Thanks for any input!!!!!!

I had a cycle last august with PCRM and I am extremely satisfied with them. I personaly think that they know what they are doing and are into the latest technology.
I had 2 failed cycles at genesis and I switched to PCRM. I met up with 3 other gals at the same clinic and all 3 are presently pregnant and rave about PCRM too.

Meemee - how did your phone consult go? I have no idea what kind of questions I should be asking him. What did he talk about? When do you expect to hear back from them to be offered treatment?

Nikki - have you heard from them yet about your consult?????

Hi Andiy!!

My phone consult went really good. The Doc was very easy to understand, explaining things in terms i understand!! After he explained how they do IVF, the procedure the meds, and the time frame, he said if you have any questions feel free to ask. Most of our questions were answered while he was explaining things. One question i asked that was kind of directly related to how i responded last time for IUI, i asked if they perform more ultrasounds and blood work than they do through IUI. He said in the beginning it is about the same then into the second week they keep a closer eye on my progress with ultrasound and blood work.

Questions will definitely come to you as the Doc is speaking. Most of my questions were relates to his comments. Remember that NO QUESTION IS A DUMB QUESTION!!!! He was so nice and whenever i would ask a question he would start off by saying, "Good question...." I was so pleased with his mannerism's.

I am sure you will have a great phone consult as we did. I swear most of the Doctor's and Nurse's in the Fertility area of medicine receive special training on how to be a super bubbly, kind, sympathetic person :D !!! So far those are the type of Doc's and nurses i have had through our experience!!

He thought we might be able to get in for our October cycle..... :woohoo: !!!!!
I have to have the Sonohystagram done first at the Edmonton clinic...which is fine.

So good lick with your phone consult, i'm sure they will call soon :crsd:
Let me know how it went!!!!!!!
