Hi,

Just curious if anyone has signed their IVF consent with OFC after the government funding was announced? I presume that if you did, they would have said something about how long it would be before you can start your IVF cycle? Hopefully, the wait is not too long (though I know it won't be before December anyway).

Thanks!

Once you have signed consents, then basically you're just waiting for your day 1 to start. Our referral went in at OFC in June of 2015, we had our first appiontment in July and we just did our egg transfer on Thursday. Its a process and takes some time. But if I am not mistaken once consents are signed, you're good to go once your day 1 starts.

Yeah, I had heard that is the process in general.
But I thought, now that the funding has been announced by the government of Ontario, there is a wait list that has been established at OFC?
Good luck on your cycle! :) x

According to their site they have started a waitlist. Since it has been two years since my consult my doctor has re referred me and they have called to book an appoitment. I am just playing phone tag now to book. Does anyone have questions they would like me to try and have answered?

OFC has a separate list for funding from the general "waiting to cycle" list.  We are starting our new cycle in mid-Nov so we were up to recently on the list with the scheduling nurse, but we asked to be put on the waiting list for funding as well in case this cycle doesn't work out.  The clinics don't have full clarity yet as to the logistics of the funding.  The government announced that up to 4000 cycles would be funded per year, but since there are many, many more IVF patients than that (I think OFC alone has 800, and there are 20ish clinics in the GTA) it's not clear if there will be a quota per clinic and how it will all work out - do you pay up front and are reimbursed later? will the clinics have a certain number of funded spots per month? etc..

The schedule was not busy at all for November (since a lot of people are waiting for the funding to kick in) so we didn't have to wait for spots to free up, but starting in December they expect things to be a bit crazy.  For us time is of the essence and we didn't want to wait months for the backlog of patients to be processed.  But I think if they offered you a spot in November but you wanted to wait for the funding to start, you would have the option to defer until later.

This is my understanding based on what I have read, sources I got my info from too:

  • It will be available to women under the age of 43
  • One round
  • 4,000 cases each year (my husband heard 20,00 however an article I will post below says 4,000)
  • Available regardless of sexual orientation or family status
  • They are confident coverage will begin by Dec (not a guarantee)
  • No funding agreements have been reached
  • Transfer will be one embryo at a time, for as long as you have them to transfer (multiple births are costly)
  • Wait could be a year or more

While this is a great thing, it has brought on a whole new set of anxiety for me. My DH seems dead set on waiting for funding but after already waiting six years I am not sure how much more I can take. We already have nearly 15,000 saved but had a goal of 25,000 in the event of unforeseen costs. He is a saver through and through and I just want to get it over with. I also feel like due to the fact we have saved the spot would be better given to someone who can not afford it, not that paying ourselves would move us up...

I eat, sleep, drink, breathe, live for the day I can start and It is on my mind almost constantly.  I feel selfish for not wanting to wait, I am afraid we will be waiting two more years (I think I could muddle through one more) and the thought makes me sick. I am starting to feel (baby) crazy. It kills me watching others getting pregnant.

It is causing me so much stress I am considering seeing a counsellor through work.

My DH and I are going to see our RE next week to discuss our next step after our failed IVF cycle. We have many questions as well about the funding and what we would be looking at for time.

Mrs. Cauleyflower- I hear ya on this whole waiting game and how it can consume so much of your time and energy. I also don't want to wait for the funding and just  get started again on another cycle, but my DH is wanting to wait and see what would happen with the funding. Time isn't on our side and it wasn't when we started this whole process.

We have just been put on the wait list last week and from my understanding we are around 80 on the list. Its very confusing how this whole thing will work and I know there is only so much OFC can answer when they don't have any information from the government.

It is interesting that they already have 80 people on the waiting list for the funding!!

We will be signing our consent this week and ideally would like to go for the funded cycle (unless it is an extremely long wait). I wonder how will the wait for funded cycles compare to the non-funded cycles. Will it be faster to start cycling if you don't go the funded route?

I agree that this ordeal is very exhausting - mentally and emotionally. Some days are good and I am able to keep my wandering thoughts in control, but other days are much harder.

When my DH spoke with someone at OFC he had the impression that if you are willing to go the unfunded route you basically can start your cycle when AF shows up (depending on your protocol). If you're wanting to wait for the funded route, I would assume that there is a wait- depending on where you are on the wait-list. They still don't even have a start date (they said Decemeber but no official date) or the amount of patients they are able to put through.

Also, does OFC do cycling in Decemeber? I thought I had heard that because of Christmas holidays they typically don't put patients through, or if they do its a small number? Anyone have any insight on this?

@RiverRat

Our RE's secretary had told us that they don't usually cycle anyone in December - due to Christmas and stuff.

I guess we are all really curious about where we stand in the funded cycle waiting list. You said that you were number 80 on the list right? DH and I are going to sign our consent tomorrow, so based on your number, we would probably be somewhere between 81-100 on the list. I don't know how many people they can cycle per month, but I don't think it will be a big number. I really hope they cycle at least 20 people from the funding list every month starting January! That would mean a 4 month wait for us. But if they only cycle like 8-10 people every month from the funding list, that would be a muchhhhh longer wait.

Argh, I hate all these unanswered questions, but I guess the clinics do not have much clarity at the moment.

If I find out any other info tomorrow, I will let you know!

@abstruze

I recieved a phone call yesterday from the booking admin and she wouldn't give me a number of where we are on the list, so I don't know where my DH got the info from? She did mention that they were told by the government that they would have more information "early November"- so she said to expect a phone call in the next week or so with information. Keeping fingers crossed that its good news!!

Hi ladies! Thread crashing a bit here, just wanted to share some advice.

When my DH and I were ready to cycle earlier this year, I was told that they had no "spots" for me to cycle (of course this was before the funding and waiting list). I wasn't ready to give up and wait a month or two months, however long it was going to be so I called every few days to check if there had been cancellations. There turned out to be numerous cancellations as the days went on and they were able to fit me in easily.

Basically, my advice is to get on the waiting list and then be persistent with what number you are and if there have been cancellation spots that they can squeeze you into. :) This whole process is difficult enough and a long enough wait.

@RiverRat: I think I have some good pieces of information from our appointment today. Your DH was right. They do have about 80 people already on the list. They are likely to do 40 funded cycles a month and 40 non-funded cycles a month. So being number 80 on the list won't be that long of a wait after all, once the funding kicks in. If you go the non-funded route, you can start right away. Even if you go the non-funded route, you do not lose your position on the funded list. So, if for some reason, your non-funded cycle fails, you will still be number 80 on the funded list and you can go for the funded one next try without much wait.

Hope this helps answer some of the questions!

Oh my goodness that does help! I was feeling so anxious about this whole wait list thing...thank you so much for letting me know! I really appreciate it. We are headed up to OFC on the 16th- hoping for even more info then and maybe a start date of when this funding may start! Hoping sooner rather then later!

Hello everyone. Been following this question for some time while waiting for my consent signing. I was placed on the waitlist today but the clinic still had no confirmed date for funded cycles to begin. Also couldn't get any info as to where we were on the list, although they speculated that I could cycle "early spring" based on the current list. So in other words, I have no helpful info to provide at all!

Hi Everyone

We were put on the wait list 2 weeks ago and I heard from a technician that there were 100 people on the waitlist, although I don't know how accurate that is. Our doctor said that we will probably be called for the treatment in a few months.

A question: We have never done IVF before. Since the funding is only for one egg retrieval, I am nervous that they may not even get any eggs from me (I have indications of low ovarian reserve) and then it will be all over. Do you ladies think that my husband and I should pay for the 1st round so that they figure out what dosage of drugs works best for me and then do a funded round to ensure we get past the egg retrieval stage? Especially since OHIP will cover all one-at-a- time embryo transfers?

Age- 31, DOR
DH- 30, low morphology

Dec 24- start Lupron
Dec 26- start Gonal F
Jan 6- ER- 6 retrieved

Jan 9- 3 of the 4 that fertilized were all frozen so that I could get polyp removal

The list is a lot lower than I expected. We go in to register on Wednesday. Its my hope that we can start at the beginning of summer at least which looks like it could be possible and would work well for me starting stims as I work in a school and will be off all summer.  I wouldn't have to worry about working while dealing with the side effects. If the wait is within one year that wouldn't be the worst thing either as I'm still looking to loose at least 20lbs. Thanks for sharing ladies I am feeling much more hopeful than I was. I will check back in after the appointment with an update hopefully on where the list is.

So we had our consultation today! Dr. Haebe seemed pretty confident that we might get in by the end of June. I asked about the wait list and they were reluctant to give us a number as there are many factors they said will affect it. They will be getting us started on testing, I am to call to schedule ultrasounds and blood work when my period starts. They are also going to test DH's sperm. We have an appointment January 8th to sign the consent for IVF and PGD :) There are more details on my blog if you are interested, link in my signature.
