Hello Ladies,
I am new to this site. My husband and I are hoping to start IVF in August. We are from Charlottetown, we are seeing Dr. Brody and in Halifax we have been going to AART which we see Dr. Dunphy. We have been trying to get pregnant for over three years. We are very frustrated with everything. We are just wondering since you ladies are going through IVF, what kinds of cost will we be looking at. We were given a paper from the AART explaining prices; but I was wondering if someone who is going through it can give me some insite on price. Is it a long procedure when you start the IVF? Hopefully someone can help!

Hi Ginny and welcome,

Not sure what the prices are in canada, because I live in US. I paid almost $10,000.00 including meds. IVF cycle without meds was $6,500.00.

If you have already completed all of your testing and are just waiting to start. I would say from start to finish it takes about 5-6 weeks.

I will also be cycling in August!!!

Good luck,
Dana

Hi Ginny, welcome. I am also a patient of Dr. Brodie's, I'm currently on stims (hopefully doing ET Wednesday :crsd: ) This is my second fresh IVF with AART (first one with TCART), as for costs it can be anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 depending on your situation. I have SOME insurance through work and they will only pay $1,000 max for the meds, then we're on our own. So far it has cost us approx. $7,000 and that's not counting the travelling costs. Just for example last IVF we did in 2005 I submitted just over $11,000 in receipts when I filed my personal taxes. Although this time we paid less for our meds since the Murphy's Pharmacy started supplying them. This is because last time we had to buy them from the Pharmasave in HFX and were sent the entire list Dr. Hamilton had prescribed, but didn't need all of it.

I hope this helps and good luck to you

Hello Ladies,
thankyou for all your information. My biggest fear is it going to take so long; and we have been waiting for so long like so many other people. Does anyone know what the statistics are on first time success with IVF. Can someone explain how it acutally works, how long it takes.. I thought you took meds for one month then did the IVF procedure right away, I doesnt seem that way from reading other people's comments, I understand everyone is different.

Ginny - when you're ready to start, AART will provide you with the IVF protocol and this will give you a fairly good idea as to how long the whole process is.

Here's a rundown:
You will start Suprefact day 21 of you cycle (21st day after period)
15 days later you will go for a down regulation, this is b/w & u/s
if you are ready, then the Thurs. following you down reg you will begin your stims (Bravelle & Repronex)
Day 2 of stims (Friday) you & DH will take antibotics
You will start b/w & scans approx. 5 days after your first injection and they will be every 1-2 days for about 10-12 days
then you will be instructed to take your HCG trigger shot and 36 hrs. later is retrieval
your transfer will be 3 - 5 days later depending on if you have a 3 day or 5 day transfer
your beta (preg. test) will be 16 days later.

Now all that is subject to your situation of course, but give or take a few days it should be fairy close. The cycle calendar that Rick provided you is a real good too.

Hope I didn't overwhelm you.

As far as statistics go, it's very hard to say, it depends on a lot of variables.

Here are the rates posted on AART's site:

AART Success Rates

AART enjoys success rates that match the leading clinics in Canada. Our results can be summarized as follows:

Clinical pregnancy rate per cycle commenced in all age groups (including cancelled cycles) - 49.3%

Cancellation rate - 8%

Pregnancy Rate Per Embryo Transfer By Age:

In women < 36 yrs - 62%

In women 37 - 39 yrs - 54%

In women > 40 yrs - 24%

Kathy and Rick thanks a lot for your information. Rick that cycle calendar is great and Kathy your "rundown" and what the steps are was also great. I will be seeing Dr. Brody here in Charlottetown until we are ready to start IVF, then we will be going back to Dr. Dunphy in Halifax. I wonder if there is a lot of trips to halifax a person has to make. I know Dr. Dunphy had said Dr. Brody can do some of the monitoring here in Charlottetown. When someone is going through this process, can you still work? It seems like it would be hard too. I guess a person would need an understanding boss.

You can do everything here with Dr. Brodie if you want to, she does everything here right up to the retrieval (unless she's away like this weekend), she does the scans and the b/w is done at QEH. The only time you would need to go over to HFX would be for the retrieval and transfer, that is if you want to satellite with Dr. Brodie. As for time off work, it's minimal if doing the satelliting and they will give you a Dr.'s note if required. I'm fortunate, I do have a very understanding boss, so that's a good thing.

This has been great, and given DH and I some insight into the cost.
BUT>>>

I called shoppers by my house and gave them the DIN numbers for all the meds that DR Hamilton gave me and in total the drugs came to 896 bucks...

I think I just had a brain-fart.... she gave me the list of what was needed, not how many of each I will need.. ekk..

But I also heard that you have to get the meds from the QEII pharmacy.

Where did you guys get your scripts filled???

Thank you!

Not to scare you, but my first IVF cost $15,500 including all meds, procedures, fees, flight, hotel, food, car rental, etc since I live in Alberta and went to Vancouver for two weeks. I dont' have any insurance because I'm self employed, but was able to put all expenses under my company with a 10% surcharge. I didn't include loss of income in that amount, because being self employed it's hard to calculate. But if you have holiday time, that wouldn't matter. We did ICSI, so our IVF cycle cost:

$5000 IVF cycle
$1000 orientation, fees, etc
$1000 cryopreservation
$600 shipping and cryo of extra sperm sample (just in case)
$2000 ICSI
$6500 meds (I'm a poor responder and needed extra meds)
the rest was food, hotel, car rental, etc while in BC

This also doesn't include acupuncture that I did as well which was another $1000.

It adds up quickly, so be sure to ask the clinic for ALL expenses. When I first started, I was told "oh it's about $5000". That didnt' include meds, ICSI, cryo, sperm cryo, orientation, etc. BIG DIFFERENCE. We are just gearing up to do IVF #2 in March or April, so we have to find this money all over again. It really sucks that insurance doesn't help. I wish you luck, just make sure that you are aware of all the costs ahead of time so that it doesn't sneak up on you DURING a cycle, which is much more stressful.

So far our estimate is $11-12,000 and my meds (exclude vitamins) are 100% covered under my work health plan.
We are going to McGill, Montreal fro Edmonton, Alberta.
Detailed cost estimate:
-Initial sign up fee at McGill $300
-Edmonton clinic staelitte clinics fee $500
-Edmon clinic charge for b/w & u/s $250
-Vitamins ~$200
-IVF $4500
-ISCI $1500
- embrio freezing $1000
- Accupuncture ~$400 around transfer
- 10 night + 2 flight ticket :$2100
- kenel for our dog ~$200

Hi - the clinic does tend to recommend the QEII pharmacy however you can get your prescription filled at other local pharmacies as long as you order them in advance and don't expect to walk in and have them in stock for you to start that day. Not a problem - I used another Pharmasave in metro and had no difficulties getting what I needed. Good luck - hope that helps!
