Coffee & Glass of Red Wine One Week Before Donor Egg Transfer
#1
Posted 15 June 2015 - 06:02 PM
I am having a Donor Egg Transfer next week and am in a situation where a group of us are on holidays and the next couple of nights there will be a social event - an art show - and I was wondering if I had a glass of red wine two nights in a row, - it's a wine and cheese - if this would, in some way, negatively affect my cycle? Also, I am curious if drinking coffee also negatively affect my chances of getting pregnant. I recall reading, somewhere, that coffee decreases blood circulation to the uterus. What is your opinion?
Thank you!

Thank you so much for your reply! I read the studies that say that there is a negative impact by consuming even a light amount of alcohol, but thought better to ask, since it is only a couple of glasses spread over two days - my worry was that it was one week prior to DE ET and I didn't want to take any chances, but didn't want to present as "anti-social" either... With respect to coffee, I am still trying to wean myself, but am jet-lagged, and really feel like I need a coffee; also, I am in Italy where the coffee is AMAZING! So, I find it VERY difficult to avoid!
Thank you for your response Amp77! And congratulations on your baby! You are so lucky! And blessed!
Kind regards,

I have been drinking about 2 cups a coffee a day since my transfer. I did cut back in my first trimester only because I couldn't stomach coffee but I have not noticed any ill effects. I wouldn't have anymore than 2 cups a day though.

Thank you so much for your reply! That is so kind of you to take the time to share your experience! I admit, I had 3 coffees today - it's VERY hard for me to resist... I am going to try on the weekend, when I can sleep in and take the time to put up with a headache - at the moment I am too busy...
I had read that it is best to stay away from coffee because it reduces blood flow to the uterus, thus preventing an embryo from sticking. I admit, I don't know how true that is or not - the Internet is both an abundance of information and misinformation. I don't even recall if it was from a research paper or not... But, the thought seemed plausible, so I thought best to try and avoid it, as early as possible...
Again, thanks so much for your reply Kristeen! All the best to you! Congratulations on your pregnancy - and twins... What a dream!
Warm regards,
NNYKitty

OMG! I am in Italy and have been drinking coffee like my it is the last thing I will ever do... The coffee here is AMAZING! I have been having between 3 and 5 a day... =( I did cut back to 1 coffee a day prior to leaving for Italy. Now I am worried.... I will stop as of tomorrow. =( I wonder how much I have affected my chances, & if I stop, if I can reverse what I have done. Argh!!! Thank you for your reply Breezyboo! Any suggestions on reversing any possible harm I might have done? I feel badly - coffee is my weakness and I am currently in the wrong place...
Oh, and I did have red wine - two glasses on each night the group had the wine and cheese, which was two nights this week. Now I am worried about all of the coffee have had this week. =(
Thank you for your reply Breezyboo - it's very sweet and kind of you!
Warm regards,
NYCKitty

Awww... Thanks for your reply! So nice to meet another coffee girl like myself! Lol! :-D
When ai was a little girl I used to chew coffee flavoured gum. Can you believe it?! I was surprised when they discontinued it - probably because I was the only one buying it! Lol!
Thank you for your opinion on coffee. I was not sure about what harm it can do - other than cause a withdrawal headache... And decaf is just not the same... Also, I don't even know if they sell decaf at the cafes... I never thought to ask... Thanks for suggesting it - it might help take the edge off of me I when I try to quit.
Thanks for pointing out about keeping my stress level as low as possible. I am trying to keep it as low as possible - I don't even get stressed when I get lost in Rome and it has happened on MANY occasions! Lol! :-D
I know stress is not good during cycling - that is why I took a painting workshop in Rome. There is usually less stress when on holiday. Unfortunately, I miscalculated when I would have the ET and now have to fly out in the middle of my workshop. I thought I would have the embryo transfer in mid-June, with the workshop coinciding with my 2ww. I didn't expect to have to be on a package and a half of BCP, which held off my cycle.
Because I wanted to do the painting workshop during my 2ww, I am STRONGLY considering taking another workshop with this same artist, right after the portrait painting workshop I am currently attending, but am uncertain about many things. I LOVE learning from him - he is AMAZING to watch and learn from! Plus he is a very down to earth and super-sweet guy - I was really nervous on my first day and really intimidated by him because I admire his work so much. Now, I am much more comfortable learning from him and not at all intimidated by him, although at am still in awe of his abilities! He is like a modem day Rembrandt!
A Watercolour and Drawing Workshop is being offered by him after this workshop ends. So now, I am seriously thinking of staying on because I wanted to keep my stress levels down to a minimum during the 2ww - and in particular, the next 3 weeks. What I am unsure of is how that would work with respect to after care, if I actually do get pregnant. Are progesterone suppositories enough? Would I need to be on any other medicines to prevent miscarriage? I am very unsure of what to do at this point.
Anyway... Thanks for your reply Breezyboo - it was nice to hear from you! :-)
All my best!
Warm regards,
NYCKitty

Thank you!! ...and caffeine changes your body at a cellular level. It speeds your body up, increasing urination and makes you dehydrated. The stimulant factor is damaging to your cells...so they say!

Thank you for your reply! I'll try and quit coffee. The decaf in Italy is aweful. I'll have to try and quit caffeine. =(. Not sure whether I can take Advil or Tylenol or if anything at all for the caffeine withdrawal headache.

All medically related posts are most welcome in the "Ask the RE" section. General IVF questions & catch-ups are best posted in the various cycle buddies threads, waiting lounge, donor/surrogacy threads, etc.
Thank-you for your understanding!
