Have you participated in group therapy regarding infertility sometime in the past three years? A Masters level thesis research project is being conducted by Karen Chester, a Master of Counselling student at City University, which explores how couples who have participated in group therapy (either one or both partners) perceive the usefulness of that process to themselves as individuals, and as a couple.

Criteria:

- You and/or your current partner have participated in group therapy for clients with infertility sometime within the past three years

- Prior to participating in group therapy, you and your current partner experienced infertility for at least one year

- Neither you or your partner had a diagnosis of clinical depression prior to knowing about your infertility

- You speak and understand English well, even if English is not your first language

- You would be willing to be interviewed for between 60 and 90 minutes, and to have this interview audio recorded.

Privacy:

- Your privacy will be protected: your names will not be disclosed in any written version of the presentation of data from this study. In addition, any unique identifiers will be removed further ensuring your privacy. All research data will be kept according to the relevant privacy legislation in British Columbia.

Contact: To contact me indicating your interest in being interviewed please email Karen Chester at: [email protected]

Institution: City University of Seattle, Langford, B.C. campus

Does it have to be formal group therapy?

Trying to conceive since our wedding day May 25, 2008.
Started Clomid Jan-April 2012.
Referred to RFP June 2012.
First consult at RFP November 2012.
First IVF cycle on antagonist protocol (GonalF, Luveris) January 2013.
Transferred two day-3 embryos, had severe OHSS, lost one twin between 7-13 weeks but was expecting one little one October 2013.
Found out at 6 mos that our little one had died weeks earlier and had to induce and deliver stillborn, July 25, 2013.
Something found on adrenal gland at follow up ultrasound, MRI showed what seems to be a benign tumor. Meeting with specialist Jan 8, 2014 - all fertility treatments on hold. :/
Tumour is definitely producing Aldosterone (causes high blood pressure) and Cortisol. Lucky me, only 34 similar cases recorded in the world! Tumour removed May 2014.
Approached about a possible adoption March 2014. Rush through all the paperwork and process.
Charlotte Evangeline born June 27, 2014. We brought her home on July 7 and held our breath for 10 days until she officially became ours.
Surprise BFP October 2014. Due to wonky cycles, ultrasounds convince Doctors I have a blighted ovum but detailed ultrasound reveals heartbeat at 6w3d. On progesterone support and waiting to see if pregnancy is still viable. Holding our breath again.
Adalyn Marie born on June 9, 2014 after a roller coaster pregnancy.

Hi! Ideally I am looking for those who have participated in group therapy however a large proportion of respondents so far have described various ways in which they achieved a sense of group support that may not have been counsellor-led. I think this is really interesting, and a creative response to the need to feel supported during the experience of infertility. I'd be very interested in hearing from you if you'd like to discuss your experience. It looks like you live in Fort McMurray so we could do a phone interview which I anticipate to be shorter than the in-person interviews ... perhaps 30 - 60 minutes. Please feel free to email me at: [email protected] ...  Thank you very much for your interest. If you know of anyone else who might be interested in giving a voice to their experience please don't hesitate to pass the word along. I have a poster which is easy to send by email, and which outlines the criteria.

Sincerely,

Karen

Yes, my point in asking the question was because not all of us live in centres where counsellor-led group sessions are available. We have a small member led group that meets occasionally.

Yes - that makes it impossible to access something more formal. Even in looking at what is available in urban centres, I've noticed some provinces have support groups or group therapy available only in their largest city or capital.

Thank you to everyone for your interest ... the research portion of this project has completed! My hope is the results will have applications both to clinical counsellors running group therapy, and for the facilitators of peer-led support groups.

Thanks so much!

Karen
