Hello All,

I am 29 year old female. Anxiously awaiting my consultation appointment at Conceptia on April 1st 2015. I married my amazing husband (36) in 2013. He has two children from a previous relationship and a had vasectomy 7 years ago.

He underwent  a Vasectomy reversal in  March 2014. What we were told to be classic text book surgery with no scar tissue or issues. He had a horrible recovery 6 weeks at home off work compared to the usual 2 weeks. However he was vigilant  with following care instructions and  on bed rest to promote healing. Despite after numerous  sperm analysis revealed there is ZERO sperm present. Surgery unsuccessful.

While completing the required  partner blood work necessary for Consultation it was revealed I have high prolactin ( 30) when normal range is 7-15.   My MD can not make sense of this. She ordered a MRI and haven't heard back since.  Anyone else out there in a similar situation?  Fertility treatment after a Unsuccessful vasectomy reversal or  any experience with high Prolcatin levels in women?

Thanks

Best wishes with your treatment, thankfully they did the testing before you cycled so you know about the prolactin issue beforehand so they can deal with it.
I had a Tumor that they didn't discover until after we did IVF. Pretty pricey way to get a diagnosis.

Something found on adrenal gland at follow up ultrasound, MRI showed what seems to be a benign tumor. Meeting with specialist Jan 8, 2014 - all fertility treatments on hold. :/
Tumour is definitely producing Aldosterone (causes high blood pressure) and Cortisol. Lucky me, only 34 similar cases recorded in the world! Tumour removed May 2014.

Thank you for your response. Tumor on the pituitary gland? How did they treat yours? Surgery/Meds? Do you know your Prolactin level pre- diagnosis. Have you have successful Fertility treatments after treatment for prolactinoma? I am largely a NEWBIE to all things infertility... We are just starting our journey.

Hi Patiently Waiting,

My husband and I just went threw our very first IVF. He also has 2 daughters and had a vasectomy about 10 years ago. The doctors didn't even recommend we took the reversal route because of our age, and its been so long since his vasectomy that we would need to do an IVF anyways. And we only want 1 child.

We went a first consultation in 2013 and got a chock about the high price, but then after the NB grant was announced we went back to start the process.

What we did is an IVF for me, but my husband needed a TESA and we needed to ICSI the eggs. if you go on the conceptia website, all the information is pretty clear on what the procedures are.

Well I am now 4.5weeks pregnant.

Hi Ren,

Thanks so much for sharing. You have brought me so much hope! Congratulations on BFP! So exciting!

Can you tell me a bit about the TESA and ICSI? I assume it is additional cost on top of the price of IVF. Did they say if this further decreased odds of sucessful IVF. I wish we never would have done the reversal it was 6000 down the drain... But we were also told we had 90% chance of sucess. Which was clearly not true,..

Thanks

Hi Patiently Waiting,

The IVF is $6000, the TESA is $1500, and the ICSI is $1500. The TESA was done the day before the ER where the urologist just went directly to get the sperms to use, because the sperms are immature we had to do the IVF to retrieve the eggs, and they needed to be ICSI (where they put 1 sperm inside each eggs). When you go for your consultation, the doctor will give you the odds for everything, he's the one that told us that the Retrieval would more then likely not work.

There will be many bloodtests and testing and meeting with the Urologist before you even start the IVF treatment. So you can get all the information you need as you go. And just to warn you, the medications can be a lot more then you would think. And medical insurance doesn't always cover the entire costs.

And I can imagine how hard it would be to pay for the Reversal and have it not work.

I hope I answered all your questions, let me know if you have any more, or if you need anyone to talk to. Oh and by the way, I'm sure your husband will freak out when he finds out about how they get the sperm at the consultation, mine did...

Hi again Ren,

We have Blue cross.. Since I'm new to infertility and unsure of drugs needed for us I haven't looked it up to see if they are partially covered with our plan.. I'm praying that they are...

II'm sure my DH will freak too.. Did they sedate your DH to do the PESA? Also were you able to freeze embryos after ICSI for future IVF cycles or do they perform a PESA each time?

Thanks for answering all my questions. I really appreciate it and is calming to talk to someone in similar situation :)

Hey Patiently Waiting,

They don't sedate at our clinic, they just give a lot of really good drugs threw IV's. When you go for your consultation appointment, they will give you all the drug list with their codes so you can go online to Blue Cross and check on what is covered. Some of them will say please contact so you just email the company and they will tell you how much you are covered for per calendar year, and per lifetime. or if your plan is better then mine, it might all be covered.

Unfortunately, my Embryos didn't make it to freeze, it really upset me cause I always thought to myself that when I'd do the treatment, I wouldn't worry about the outcome, cause I'd have the frozen ones to fall back on. From what I've seen on the groups, it's unusual that the extras don't make it. But at day 3, I had to go in, we transferred the 2 perfect Embryos that I had, the other 3 we already knew were So-so. so it wasn't a big surprise that they didn't make it, but I really thought they would. So I was still devastated when I got the call at work... But if everything goes well, like I am wishing and praying, I didn't need the extras anyway.

I'm going for my second BETA on Saturday morning, I'm starting to worry about it, and when the numbers come back good, I'll be less worried for a couple of days, then I'll be worried about the Ultrasound, I'm looking forward to the day I see 1 or 2 heartbeats in there.

Do you live close to Moncton? I'm just curious where you are from, but obviously you don't need to say if you don't want to.

Thank you I appreciate that, I am 5 weeks pregnant today, I starting crocheting a baby hat last night at my friends suggestion, she is also the Dr who will deliver my baby.

For a little over a week (maybe 2), you need to be at the clinic every single morning, just so you can plan a trip around it maybe when its the time.

I'm so nervous for tomorrow's appointment, and I hope I don't get nauseous when I smell puppy poop since we are having a little of puppies beginning of April...

I would recommend you take the time before you start your treatment to make sure you do fun stuff with the kids, how old are they? Did you tell the kids you might be planning to give them a brother or sister?

How exciting! I bet the hats are adorable. Funny how infertility robs you of all that pre planning. I use to pick up sweet baby things and tuck them away until we found out the reversal didn't work. Then it became Almost like it's too painful to even hope...

My step kids are 10 and 12. They desperately want a sibling but do not know we are pursuing IVF. I don't want to get their hopes up if we are not sucessful. I just tell them " maybe someday, lord willing " :) we defiantly can't afford to do multiple rounds of IVF and will have to save and build up our fertility account again if not successful initially.

Yikes, every day for atleast a week or 2.. I wonder if they have alternate closer to home site? Or if I can do it at my hospital and have results sent to Conceptia?

Excited for tomorrow for you! :) :) :)

Thank you, I'm sure y can discuss that with them when you go for your consultation. But with all the monitoring they do. It feels good to know everything is going good when I went.

I got my second Beta today. The numbers were double what they should be. I'm so super excited. Waiting 3 more weeks so I can get my ultrasound and know if there is a heartbeat. Or maybe even 2.

My husband did the TESA and was sedated.  I remember him saying that night that he wished he could tell other men how easy it was.  He didn't even need tylenol 3 they prescribed for him.  The do IV sedation for the egg retrieval too.

Since your husband has what would be considered obstructive azoospermia, they should be able to find sperm right away in him.

Becky (35)  Unexpectedly widowed in Feb 2013.  The night after my ER.  I was married to an incredible man named Chris.

Son, age 6
TTC #2 (his first) since our wedding in July 2011.

Dec 1, 2011- Found out he has azoospermia (no sperm in SA.)  Totally heartbroken and shocked.
Jan 2012- First consult at fertility clinic.
March 2012- My tests show high LH but everything else was normal. His LH/FSH were high, testosterone was really low. (4.2)
May 17, 2012- Official Dx of testicular failure and non-obstructive azoo. Given the option of mTESE, TESA or using a donor.
June 7, 2012- Urologist is seeing us again per our request. We need him to answer some questions about the procedures and testosterone.  He would not consider Clomid or any hormones for DH.
June 27, 2012- Saw RE and decided to proceed with dIUI. Told we needed one cycle on the BCP because of my high LH.
June 28, 2012- Started BCP for 21 days. Did pre-IUI micro and blood testing on July 3rd. Told they should be in on time for IUI in early August.
July 21, 2012- CD1. Called clinic and found out my cycle was canceled. They messed up and my file wasn't ready. They forgot to draw vit D and some other results are missing.
August 9, 2012- Nurse left message saying they cannot do this cycle either. Now it will take 2-3 MONTHS for DH's blood tests before we can use donor sperm.
August 10, 2012- RE called. DH has a reactive Hepatitis C blood test and they are trying to figure out if he's got an active infection or was exposed in the past.
August 23, 2012- He's Hep C NEGATIVE! Phew!
October 2012- Latest SA results still shows azoo, but we're glad the testosterone looks normal now. dIUI after 21 days on the pill. Clomid for cd3-7, LH is too high (17 and 14.6) and progestone getting too high. Had 3, 13.5mm folliciles and my lining is 8.6. CD13- Lining was good, triple layer at about 9. Now I just have one 17.5mm follicle on my left side.
October 17, 2012- dIUI  canceled. Clomid didn't work, estrogen too low, LH was normal again and progesterone was off too. Now we need an appointment to talk to our RE again to start over.
Dec 2012- Saw RE and we have to do IVF/ICSI, even with a donor. So, we decided to throw in a TESA with donor backup. Bloodwork this cycle, BCP and mock in Jan and hopefully a Feb IVF/ICSI/TESA!

IVF #1
Mock done, teaching visit done.  Started Suprefact on Jan 30.  AF arrived on schedule.
Baseline done, starting Gonal-F and Luveris Feb 11.
Stim day 4-  1 follicle at 11mm, 40 more under 10.  My lining is already a triple lining and at 8.6
Stim day 6-  8-9 follices between 11-13mm at least 20 more under 10mm.  This doctor saw my lining at 6.3?   Encouraged to walk because my circulation to my uterus wasn't what they wanted to be this time.  No idea what that means.
Stim day 8-   14 follicles.  All measuring between 11 and 15 with more under 10.   Lining is over 10.  Circulation is good again.   They are letting me skip my day 9 appointment.
Stim day 10-  TRIGGER tonight!   I have 14 between 15-21mm, a few more at 14 that may catch up.  Lining is over 10.   DH's TESA is tomorrow.
Feb 21-  No sperm found with TESA.   ER tomorrow with donor sperm.
Feb 22-  ER was successful!  Collected 18 eggs.   7 from my right and 8 on my left.  We can skip ICSI because the donor's sperm is great.  Crossing fingers for a good fert report tomorrow.
June 2013- Updating. My husband, Chris, passed away unexpectedly of Sudden Arrhythmia Death Syndrome just hours after my ER on Feb 23.  Had 14 fertilize.  9, 5-day frozen blasts are at the clinic waiting for me to make some decisions.

FET #1

June 2014-  5-day blast.   BFN just in time for what would have been our 3rd anniversary.

FET#2

August 2014.  FET #2 on Aug 25 with another 5-day blast.  BFP!   Had scare with a bleed at 4w5d, but beta is still doubling.  Due May 13, 2015.  Ultrasound on Oct 5.

Oct 5-  8w4d-  Blighted Ovum.  Stopping estrogen and progesterone.  Waiting to miscarry.  Looking forward to moving on with life.

Oct 17- D&C.   Feeling peace about being at the end of the infertility battle.  Looking forward to the next chapter in my life.

Oops, I just realized this is an old post!  Sorry!

Still useful information. Actually my husband has been freaking a bit about in last few days about the TESA procedure and not being put to sleep at Conceptia for it so this will hopefully ease some of his anxiety.. We are both spliney when it comes to medical procedures ( was really hoping the reversal would work and could get pregnant naturally..) Alas pregnant at all we will be thrilled! However not knowing what to expect and hearing how painful it was for egg retrieval and TESA for some when they weren't put under is causing some anxiety.
