I am new to this, but would like to connect with people at 50 or older who entered this journey. I am 50, have 6 donor eggs waiting for me and in September it might happen, if nature allows for it. My first time and I have a 25 year old daughter.

Failed marriage and then met a wonderful man. So here I am, can retire in a few years, benefits pay for the ivf and have many years left to parent around the clock, something I could only do part time with my daughter.

Healthy as can be, except for "George", yup, named the single polyp, who is now gone. An amazing GP and then the Gyncecoligist in Toronto, oh and the accupuncture physician, and they did not even frown when I told them what I am trying to do. Going to Mexico in September and excited, yet cautious. Nature will dictate what happens. The donor, a young woman who looks like she could be my twin, just soo much younger.

A jouney!

I can't be alone in this?

Thank you and I am getting quite excited, also chuckling to take BCP at 50 to get pregnant. 6 more weeks and then we will see. 4 weeks until I start the estrogen and slowly getting into a good frame of mind, meaning that nature will decide. Yes, helping it along somehow, yet if my body is ready, it will work.

Interesting how my partner deals with it,lol.......he does not say much about it, but I am worried that he is hoping so much and I am hoping too, but am prepared for it not to work. Oh darn emotions

You are so sweet and thank you, so hoping for a nice endomitrium, and stange that I worry about something which usually just happend each month, lol

I am so comfortable with the egg donor idea and not much attached to my own DNA. Hey, I think I am great, but so are others, and they are not related to me. 6 little eggs sitting in Mexico and by September 12 will meet my partner's sperm. What a beautiful journey at this stage of my life. Sami, what worries you about donor eggs?

P.S.:

I have to add, as I am quite fond of my partner ......I like the idea that if a little creature is created and growing inside me, it will be part of him. Hope it does not sound strange, but I have a science degree and my eggs or the ones of another woman, well not so important to me. I have a grown daughter and I love her because of the "us", me raising her, not because of her having a DNA connection with me. All the cool stuff of rasing her, teaching her, being with her and at no point did I make desicions as a parent because she carries my blood line.

I have the best friends on earth and they are not related to me and had some relatives........yup, would not have chosen to have them in my life.

I think it takes some soul searching and as I once experienced pregnancy and child rearing, from my perspective, parenting and love are not related to DNA.

Sami, what worries you about donor eggs?

Hi Gaby, I don't have any real big concerns about donor eggs - just the price and where I'm going to do it.  I've had my initial consult and ultrasound at VFC.  I have to get some bloodwork, get a mammogram and I have to start taking estrogen to build my lining because I have none since I'm in full blown menopause.  I'm not sure how long this will take - I will have to make an appointment for a sonohysterogram and mock cycle once I've taken the estrogen for a couple of weeks.  The doctor told me that in 80% of cases, the lining will thicken.  If it does not thicken then I'm not a good candidate to do DE IVF.  So I guess I will find out in the next couple of months.  If it's a go then I'll have to decide whether I'm going abroad for a fresh donor cycle or whether to go through a frozen egg donor bank as my clinic is affiliated with egg donor bank usa.

Sami, My Hysterosongarm showed a tiny polyp and a week later I had him removed. My lining on BCP is about 2 mm and I am optimistic to thicken it, when I start the Estrogen. Mammogram and bloodword were part of my annual physical and showed I am almost in menopause.

Will start  Estrogen at the end of August with 2 mg for 5 days, then 4 mg for 5 days and thereafter 6 mg per day. My gynecologist was nice and scheduled two internal ultrasounds for me, as the clinic in Mexico wanted it and it allows to check the lining in intervals.

I paid $ 5200 for the donor eggs and she is a 21 year old donor. My physician went a bit crazy with all the test, but that was good as now I know I am in pretty good condition.

Good luck on your mock cycle.

Hi Sami99,

What clinic are you using - I was wondering about the legitimacy of egg donor banks but if they are affiliated with a legitimate agency that helps.

  • I am getting a bit nervous, and so glad about the accupuncture. Not sure if it will help the endometrium, but I swear, whatever she does, 10 minutes into the treatment, I become so relaxed and the world fades away. Still puzzled as I have a science degree and I am truly a sceptical person. Came home and went to sleep. I am going twice per week and initially just did it as research shows that it might be of benefit. A few weeks later, amazed and still puzzled as it does something to me and I like it.

Gaby - good luck with your cycle in Mexico

ggirl - I am at VFC and they are affiliated with DEBUSA - donoreggbankusa.com

It is illegal to purchase "eggs" in Canada however, it is legal to pay for eggs in another country and have them transported to Canada.

Well I am going to be 50 in November 2014 and I am 8 months pregnant. So yes it can happen. I was afraid my baby might not make it to the end cause of my age. But he is all good.

So what will you do if you get 6 good embryos will you try and carry them all? I am asking cause we have 7 embryos left and we were looking at a surrogate because we were thinking I would not carry them all? I know 7 embryos doesn't mean 7 babies but they are all blasts and hatching also... Just don't want to donate them though.

I am so nervous and hope that they will make it, so hard to guess how many will develop and how far. Day 3 or 5........have been thinking about this for many days now as when the day comes, I will have to decide how many. I wish I would know already and in the worst case maybe none makes it, or in the ideal world all six. I guess I will take it a day at the time. You are so lucky, all of them having made it to blast. May I ask with, how many eggs you started?

Another day closer and for me, the "adrenaline Junkie", quite a journey. I have learned to relax and as  much as I am a sceptic of accupuncture, and not sure if it will help to increase uterine blood flow......omg. I go there twice per week and 5 minutes after she places the needles......calm, zen, floating away and have never been more relaxed. I walk out of her office, a giant marshmellow, so relaxed and feel amazing, not sure how and why, have a science degree and was so sceptical, just did it because some research showed that it might increase the chances. In one month I am in Mexico and will start the next part of my journey

Well we just got lucky now... we were with the same clinic for 7 years and none of the donor egg cycles worked. This one was our last one and she gave 13 eggs and we got 9 fertilized and PDG them all and so we have 5 girls, 2 boys and 2-3 abnormal so not good.

You will do great don't worry... Hey it worked for me and I didn't' even use any medication at all so you will be all set with the right RE I am sure.

So you mentioned 6... do you have 6 eggs to fertilize or 6 embryos ready to thaw?

Always hated statistics in university and now,lol.....I am somewhat optimistic and then there are other days, where I do not want to get too hopeful.  have to learn that it will be a day at the time. Just want to be in Mexico and have these little eggs fertilized.

Hi there Gabyp,

Would you mind telling us where you got your frozen eggs from? Was it a known donor or did you purchase from an eggbank? The price you paid is incredibly reasonable...

I've been following your story and wish you good luck! One more question: are you considering having an endocratch done?

Hi,

I am going to Mexico and the clinic is Interafertility. The egg donor was chosen by me, got pictures, her health history etc. and then a few months later retrieved in Mexico and stored by Cryobank. They got paid seperately. I had a D&C because of a polyp, about 8 weeks ago and hope my endometrium will cooperate. Stopping bcp soon and then gradually start with estrogen on day 1 of my cycle. two ultrasounds planned before I go to Mexico and hope there is s good response otherwise will have to tweak the estrogen regimen.

Tomorrow is my first ultrasound to check the lining. I am so nervous. Know that I still have time, but hope that things progress and that the estrogen works. I will post the result after my test. Next ultrasound on the 8th and the next day on a plane to Mexico.

one week left until my flight to Mexico and so luckky as I have the support of just the greatest physicians and ultrasound technicians. My first ultrasound today, was initially 2 mm baseline and now 9 mm and triple layer. Still a week left until I board that plane and so excited, all looks good.
