I am curious if anyone else has experienced issues with their uterine lining being too thin?

Can anyone share their story where they had thin lining and a successful IVF/pregnancy?

I need some hope because I am very discouraged and my doctors are telling me there is nothing more they can do.

I have gone through 1 fresh embryo transfer and no luck (day 5 blasto), unfortunately the IVF failed. Now I am trying to prepare for a frozen embryo transfer but the last two were cancelled because my lining was too thin.  The maximum I reached was 6.3mm but that only lasted 2 days and quickly fell down to 4.5mm even though I was on max dose estrace and patches.  This month, I am at 4.3mm at Day13 and I am averaging .3 grow per 3 days and no matter what they give me it doesn't make much of a difference. The doctors are telling me they have not seen this before and don't know why this is happening and will not transfer unless I am at 7mm or greater.

I have tried everything:

- estrace tablets (2mg TID), orally, vaginally

-Patches 3-4 every 2 days

- Both together, separate

- I did acupuncture once a week for 2 months

- I take 1500mg of Primrose oil a day

- daily baby aspirin

- drink lots of water

No luck :(

also, has anyone tried Viagra for thin lining? if so, did it work?

Hi there,

I had similar issues with thin lining and also had two FETs canceled (consecutive months) because of thin lining.  Mine decreased drastically even after I had started progesterone.  That dumbfounded my fs because he/everyone always assume that progesterone will keep lining status quo.

Estrace taken orally as well as patches did NOTHING to help.  That's what i did the two times FETs were cancelled.

Estrace taken vaginally worked.  I took about 8mg a day.  Perhaps you need to increase your dose?

I have not taken viagra but have heard about it working for others...

Another option is having a Neupogen wash.  I have not tried it (since estrace vaginally ended up working), but know it is often used to thicken lining.  It is a injected (same idea as an IUI).  Pretty sure it works within a couple days.

Hope this helps! I know how very very very frustrating it is when your body fails to cooperate despite all your efforts and trying dif things.

I hear you... I had the same issue, plus I had fluid in my lining, leading to countless cycles being cancelled.

I did all the same things you did- tons of water, acupuncture, vitamin E, baby aspirin, pom juice, to no avail.

This cycle, we did a fresh one (even though we still had some frozen embryos left), did an endometrial biopsy the month before ER, and the biggest help was electrostim acupuncture, turned up as high as that darn machine would go! I could tell it was making a difference- when I left the dr office my abdomen felt crampy and like I had just done 50 sit ups.

Wishing you the best of luck. I really know how frustrating lining issues are. Fx for you.

PS- The next thing I would have tried (and would have switched clinics for) would have been the G-CSF (neupogen) infusions to help beef up lining. It's showing some promise in the US and is starting to be used here in Canada.

Have you tried a unmedicated FET? Sometimes your body will do better on its own??

Endomentrium biopsy? Neupogen shot I used .....and my uterine lining was 6.7 and I had identical twins....and also just talked with my RE about various stuff and I told him that I had heard that some clinics would not transfer over 8 mm....and he said he had lots of cases with women with linings between 6-8 that were successful ....so if I was at another clinic that I needed 7 mm....I would have been hooped....

Good luck!!

I have used Viagara for lining issues and it helped. It's Viagara (I forget the generic name) and another drug. I did it in the States.

I also used viagra - inserted vaginally and it definitely helped. It was a 7 day course - expensive but very effective. I was also on estradot 4 patches - my RE seems to think climara is more effective but I've had better luck with estradot. If your using one, you could ask about the other to switch it up.

Good luck!!

For my last FET (I'm currently 20 weeks pregnant from it) I only took tamoxifen. It's a breast cancer medication. I had never heard of it before but it seemed to do the trick. My lining went from 6mm to 9mm in 3 days.
I also drank red raspberry leaf tea (4 times a day for 4 days). But you have to be careful with the tea because if you have fibroids or polyps it can make them worse.

I don't know if it was the tea only, the tamoxifen only, or a combination of the two, but that did the trick for me.

Best of luck!

Thank you everyone :)  ....for all your stories and providing me with all the great advice.  It is helpful to hear what others have gone through and their outcome. This forum has been a great resource for me over the last few weeks, it is not always easy fining others who are going through similar circumstances.

I just had my final ultrasound today and in the end they cancelled my FET, the MDs are just baffled. This cycle they had me on estrace (vaginally) 6 mg, plus 3 patches of estridot every two days plus low dose aspirin combined with raspberry leaf tea and primrose oil.  My last ultra sound came back at 4.8mm didn't even come close to 7 :(

I am now consulting with other clinics to get second opinions.  One of them is in New York and is a center who specializes in this type of issue and may be able to provide alternative therapies. I guess trying anything at this point can't hurt.

I will keep you posted...I am just praying that this is not the end of my journey.

New update

After cancelling my last cycle due to thin uterine lining, my doctor agreed to have a one on one to talk about our options. They have decided (and I am very thankful) to try Viagra and patches for 10 days. My MD didn't feel hopeful because he has never tried it before but after researching for sometime I feel optimistic.

It is now day 3 and I am on 100 mg of Viagra/day and 4 patches of estradot.  I won't lie, I feel horrible as the s/e are pretty bad but I am very hopeful that this will work. Thus far the headaches are my biggest complaint and the sometimes light headedness but I feel this is worth every moment if it means I can go for my next FET!

Wish me luck! I'll know in 7 more days...

Update from last post:

May- The cycle with Viagra was not a success, actually it turned out to be my worst cycle for my lining to date.  I was taking 2 pills daily (first orally and than vaginally) plus estrace TID, my lining got up to a whole 4.2mm.  I had bad headaches while on Viagra so it was a relief to finally stop. After talking with 3 differed RE's about Viagra and 2 pharmacists, it was clear that in most cases Viagra does not work for increasing lining.

Due to my long wait to try and get my lining up, we decided to do a FET anyways with a lining of 4.3mm, my dr said I had nothing to lose so we went for it. Transferred 2 blasto (5 day) frozen embryos.  No positive pregnancy test :(

June- had hysteroscopy at MUHC- actually attempted twice.  First hysto was not a success, they could enter the uterus, and I was bleeding heavily and was in a lot of pain.  My RE re-did procedure 1 week later under sedation in the OR (much better and less painful). Diagnosis: found scaring and adhesions, which they removed. Biopsy came back with chromic inflammation, they put me on heavy dose of antibiotics right away.

July- Another FET,  we decided to take a different approach, we started with an ovarian stimulation (Gonal F) without egg retrieval.  The idea was that high dose hormones would increase my lining. Was doing this TX while on antibiotics.  Got sick after 3 days of treatment (most likely due to the antibiotics), stopped all TX and continued with only estridot (3 patched every 2 days).  Lining made it up to 6.8mm !!!  Sounds low but this is high for me.  Decided to go forward with FET was supposed to be 2 frozen embroys (day 5 and day 6), but one died on the thaw and only 1 day 5 was transferred.  Bad luck...but better than nothing.

10 days after the transfer a positive pregnancy test (first time in my life).  2 days later, miscarried, chemical pregnancy.  Reason for miscarriage unknown, but most likely lining too thin as per my RE.

My husband and I believe there were two factors that made this cycle more successful versus the last. The hysteroscopy, which removed adhesions and the biopsy which created a window for implantation.  I recommend anyone who has had repeated IVF/FET failure to do this test.

August: Now waiting for next IVF cycle, as we have no embryos left.  Plan to start in September once miscarriage is over...still have HCG in low 30's.

FYI: if anyone is thinking about going to the MUHC (McGill) for TX, they have a 3-4 (more like 4) months waiting list for FET

I'm having thin lining issues and it's driving me absolutely crazy. This FET cycle I'm on letrozol, menopur and gonal f. After five full days on the letrozol and three with the menopur/gonal f combo my lining is at 3. I want to cry :(

Update:  Started a new IVF fresh cycle in September.  Retrieved 16 eggs (diagnosed with OHSS), 4 fertilized, transferred 2 day 5 embryos.  I finally got pregnant and I am now 4 months along and due in June. My husband and I, along with our physician are in disbelief, we never though we would achieve any success but for some miracle it worked finally!    My dr thinks that perhaps the removal of the uterine scaring is what allowed me to get pregnant but we may never know.  we had just about lost hope for any success at having children and I am so glad I never gave up.  Thanks to everyone for all your helpful advice and support.  Wishing everyone lots of strength and success!!!

I had a beautiful lining for my fresh cycle and then a terrible one for my FET! Come to find out thru tests a very small percentage of women don't recognize and absorb forms of estrogen other than their own! Try doing lining check on no meds to see what your lining looks like. If it is good than you will need to do an un-medicated "Natural" FET, :)

I took oral estrace, progesterone, patches, estrogen shots etc; nothing worked; the dr refused to try vaginal estrace because she said it would be too messy when I started progesterone vaginally; she also refused to increase my estrace which was 6mg each day because she said higher doses cause blood clots. I went back and forth to this clinic for ultrasounds for almost a year trying different protocols; she eventually said she thought I should go ahead with my donor eggs with a lining of 6; we trusted her and went for the ivf; the other doctor said the embryo looked perfect and the nurses were telling us congratulations after the procedure and telling us how wonderful it was that we were getting this done on our anniversary; only to find out 10 days later that it didn't work; spent 10,000 on donor eggs and around 10,000 on ultrasounds, meds etc for nothing

Hi I'm new to the forum but have been scouring the Internet for other ladies with the "thin lining" issue.
I've had two cycles cancelled due to my lining never getting over 6mm. On fresh and one frozen cycle. We now have two frozen embryos.
Estrogen tablets seem to not work for me at all and my lining disappears completely. Also I've had fluid on my scans.
I'm about to start another cycle and am on tamoxifen days 2-6 then I'm going for a scan, after which I'll be on lubion and pegestrone pessaries. Also I'm having a trigger shot injection the same as I had for egg collection.
At et day on my fresh transfer attempt my lining ended up at 4 and was abandoned.
The first frozen attempt I down regulated and then they started me on Estrogen tablets. Kept in creasing my dosage as I wasn't thickening enough and eventually my lining completely disappeared. It's so stressful and upsetting. Just hoping it works for us this time. It's so good to read about others successes and gives you hope there will be something that works! Any advice would be much appreciated xx

On 4th cycle now, though we haven't completed one yet due to poor lining, to thin.
Thin lining issues are driving me mad!
Cycle 1 May 15- lining 6.3 before egg collection-dropped to 3.5 on ET day, fluid. Estrogen tablets didn't work.
Cycle 2 FET lining disappeared by ET day. Up to 4 Estrogen tabs per day for two weeks-nothing worked!
Cycle 3 FET Tamoxifen 20mg cycle Nov-15 5.2mm lining at cd10 no fluid hooray!
Nov 15 cycle abandoned starting again in Dec 15 with double dose tamoxifen -40mg

Hi, Yes I had a laparoscopy and hysteriscopy before my first cycle. Also had a endometrial scratch twice, once during my hysteriscopy/laraposcopy treatment and a second time during my fet cycle to help implantation chances but the cycle was abandoned so didn't get to find out if that would help.
