I have been reading up a bit and trying to keep things straight but find it confusing to try to pull things all together.

What I am wondering, is what vitamins are recommended and during what timeframe in the IVF journey do you take them?

I am slated to start IVF in April and wanted to start taking things now in hopes that will increase our chances.  I noticed, however, that some of the supplements indicate that you should not take them for more than 4 weeks... I will see our doctor on Tuesday and will bring them in and get her advice, but am looking to all of you experienced ladies smile.png

I have listed, below, what I purchased and am wondering what is recommended in terms of what vitamins to take, what dosage to take, when to take them - can I take them all at once or spread them out, etc.  I want to make our chances as high as possible and, given the cost of all these vitamins, want to do things "right" smile.png

Do I take all of them now?  Or there some that I would not start until the IVF process begins?

I purchased the following for myself:

1.  Materna Pre-Natal Vitamins - Take with food

2.  Vitamin A (10000 IU but the pre-natal has 1000 IU so not sure I need this)

3.  Vitamin D (400 IU but the pre-natal has 400 IU so not sure I need this either)

4.  Royal Jelly (1000 mg - says to consult doctor before taking for > 4 weeks)

5.  Ubiquinol (100 mg - plan to take 3 a day - says to consult doctor before taking for > 4 weeks) - take with food (protein)

6.  Royal Krill Omega 3 (500 mg - but says to take 2, twice a day) - take with food

7.  Melatonin (3mg - do I only take these if Ubiquinol keeps me from sleeping?  I seem to read mixed things about it)

I purchased the following for my hubby:

1.  Folic Acid (1000 mg)

2.  Vitamin D (400 IU)

3.  Ubiquinol (100 mg)

Thanks in advance!!!

Hi there,

I think the rule of thumb is to take them at least three months to see any changes.

What I did was I went to see a naturopath who specializes in fertility. I asked her to write down the vitamines and dosage.

She wrote it down per category like egg quality, membrane, etc.

I don't recall anything about talking to a doctor if I were to take it more than four weeks. My family doctor is pretty useless so I don't bother asking her (she will say there has not been enough medical research about this so go either).

Among the long list, I am only taking  Ubiquinol in addition to prenatal vit. I cannot remember the dosage. Sorry I am not the biggest help.

Did you consider fertility acupunture? I think it helped me with the first one because it helped me to relax and feel more energized.

Good luck.

TTC since Dec. 09
Me (35) him (30)
Unexplained infertility but have only one ovary (lost right to dermoid cyst in Nov. 07) and he has low morphology (5%)

July 10 - Consultation at OFC
All test results normal (did not do Kruger test or AMH test) and was told to try for another 6 months
FSH around 6, antral foli count 9 (on the left)

Dec 10 - Asked to be transferred to MTL (OVO) from OFC
April 11 - Saw Dr. Jamal, antral folli count 8 (on the left) and AMH test show low ovarain reserve (due to a single ovary). Given Clomid for two cycles, had bad reaction (very cranky) and BFN. Dr. Jamal suggested Natural IVF without stimulation. Hated OVO dearly (long wait time, extreme lack of organization, nurses, etc). Googled and found MFC. Consultation booked in Sept. 11

Sept. 11 - Saw Dr. Sophia at MFC. She suggests a standard IVF.
Sept. 11 - Learned that private insurance thru work have coverage up to 20K for IVF (Thank goodness!)
Decided to go for 1st trial at OFC given proximity.

IVF #1 (Oct 11) at OFC (Dr. Haebe) - Puregon 400 IU for 9 days. 9 leading follicles (and 8 smaller ones), which resulted in 5 eggs (but one degenerated). Only 2 fertilized thru ICSI (embryo quality second best and average). Day 3 transfer of 2 embryos, which resulted in BFN

IVF #2 (Nov 11) at MFC - Puregon 300 IU and Menopure 75 IU for 10 days. 8 leading follicles (and some smaller ones). egg collection Nov. 16/11. 7 eggs collected out of 8 follies. 6 are mature and ALL SIX FERTILIZED!!! 5 day transfer of 1 blast Nov. 21/11. Beta scheduled Dec. 2nd 1st Beta 10dp5dt 287. 2nd beta scheduled Dec. 5th 2nd Beta 14dp5dt 1,524

1st U/S Dec. 19th (6wks & 6 days): heartbeat measured at 137bpm, baby measuring 7.2mm, cervix measured at 32.9mm

August 12, 2012: A beautiful baby girl born at 11:21 pm measuring 8 lbs 3 ounces/53 cm long

Trying for Number 2

October 7, 2013 - CD1

October 9, 2013 - First consultation

Start stimulation Friday October 11 (Puregon 300 & Menopur 75) for 10 days

Retrieval October 23, 2013 - 6 eggs retrieved

Ferti report October 24, 2013 - 4 mature eggs and only 2 fertilized

At this point, I am losing hope.

Oct 25, 2013 - Surprisingly Dr. M. wants us in for 5 day transfer

ET October 28, 2013: one young blastocyst to transfer

Viability scan scheduled Nov. 21, 2013

Viability scan shows fetus behind schedule by a couple of days

Repeat U/S

Discovered on Dec 10/2013 that fetus stopped growing at 7wk4days (Missed miscarriage)

2.2.

CD1 March 29. First consult on March 31. Same protocol.

Stimulated for 8 days trigger April 8. ER April 10. Out of 8 follicles, 6 eggs retrieved. Only 1 egg was mature & fertilized. Clinic recommends Day 2 transfer. We declined Day 2 transfer given this may be a complete waste.

Dr.M. understood our concern & agreed. Booked for a Day 5 transfer (but will be a miracle if this one embryo makes it to Day 5). Dr. M. advised that the embryo on Day 2 is 4 cell grade 1. So there is little hope.

Ok no call until Tuesday, which means we are going in for a transfer on Day 5. ET on April 15. Transferred an excellent quality blastocyst. Now 2WW. Blood test April 28. BFN

2.3.

CD1 August 18. First consult on August 19. Spoke with Dr. M about two wishes - minimum 10 day stimulation & 5 day transfer. Stimulated for 11 days. ER September 4. Out of 9 follicles, 6 eggs, 4 mature and all fertilized. Dr. M called and suggest double Day 3 transfer. However, DH veto a double transfer. Sticking to Day 5 transfer. ET September 9. Suprisingly out of 4 embryos on Day 3, 3 made to blastocysts. Transfer 1 Day 5 blastocyst. Shocking call the next day saying two left over embryos were good enough for freezing. 2ww Turned out to be a chemical pregnancy

2.3.1.

FET CD1 Sept 27 First consultation Sept 30 Oct 16 Transferred two blastocysts 2ww

Hi amp77,

I don't know about all your supplements, but definitely some.

1.  Vitamin A is probably not needed as you already have it in your multivit.  Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin which means it accumulates in your body so you definitely don't want to take too much.

2.  Vitamin D is fine to take - I have been taking 2000IU's daily for ever now.  I would say 400IU's is the minimum, with 800-1000IU's even better.

3.  I used ubiquinol 400mg (200mg twice daily) for at least 6 months before IVF.  From what I understand it is supposed to help with egg quality.

4.  Melatonin is a strong antioxidant and is supposed to help with egg quality as well.  I tried it for a few weeks but actually got very down and depressed with it, as well as felt really groggy still in the morning.  Needless to say I passed on that one :)

5.  Omega 3's are a great supplement for anyone - and 2000mg daily is about right.  It's great for you, and great for baby's developing brain and eyes and everything once you get pregnant :)

I don't know much about Royal Jelly but I've heard it mentioned a few times on the site so hopefully someone will have some additional input.

I also added accupuncture to our regimen this time around.  My accupuncturist said that if you can get 8 sessions in before transfer it helps increase your chances.  I can't remember now if it helps with implantation, but I think that's what it is.  It's worth looking into if you ask me.

As for hubby's vitamins, I'm not sure.  I had my hubby take a very good quality multivit just to cover our bases.  There's a lot less evidence for supplements for men in IVF from my research....

I hope this helps a bit!  Good luck with your upcoming cycle  - I hope to hear some great news from you soon :)

I don't have much to add, because for me I was kinda wondering the same as you.  I am planning to start again May/ June.  And this time I want the best quality eggs possible.

The one thing my RE has suggested is Co-q 10 (ubiquinol)  I have started with 400 a day, but plan to up it to 600 a day because I have read that is the dose other ppl are taking.

I too bought Melatonin.  Read that it is good for egg quality, but then I have read alot of negative about it as well.  so far I have been afraid to take it.  But I still think I will give it a try.  I bought the 5mg pills, but I cut them in half so I will do a 2.5 dose.

I am also going to do Omega 3's, but haven't started them yet because I am afraid of the fish taste.

another thing I plan on is cutting out all caffiene beverages (I like coke).  So far I am still at one a day, but this time I would like to be off it completely a few months before my IVF

Here's a link to the info sheets VFC gives it's patients. I know one of them includes supplements you can take.
One thing I have heard mentioned by the naturopath is myo inositol to help egg quality as well.

Trying to conceive since our wedding day May 25, 2008.
Started Clomid Jan-April 2012.
Referred to RFP June 2012.
First consult at RFP November 2012.
First IVF cycle on antagonist protocol (GonalF, Luveris) January 2013.
Transferred two day-3 embryos, had severe OHSS, lost one twin between 7-13 weeks but was expecting one little one October 2013.
Found out at 6 mos that our little one had died weeks earlier and had to induce and deliver stillborn, July 25, 2013.
Something found on adrenal gland at follow up ultrasound, MRI showed what seems to be a benign tumor. Meeting with specialist Jan 8, 2014 - all fertility treatments on hold. :/
Tumour is definitely producing Aldosterone (causes high blood pressure) and Cortisol. Lucky me, only 34 similar cases recorded in the world! Tumour removed May 2014.
Approached about a possible adoption March 2014. Rush through all the paperwork and process.
Charlotte Evangeline born June 27, 2014. We brought her home on July 7 and held our breath for 10 days until she officially became ours.
Surprise BFP October 2014. Due to wonky cycles, ultrasounds convince Doctors I have a blighted ovum but detailed ultrasound reveals heartbeat at 6w3d. On progesterone support and waiting to see if pregnancy is still viable. Holding our breath again.

Thanks, everyone :)

I am also trying to cut out coke.  I don't drink coffee but usually have a can of coke a day.  Trying to replace it with green tea... but it is hard when I am not in the mood for something hot :)

I am looking into naturopaths and accupuncture in Ottawa.  I do get stressed over having so many appointments and missing work.  We don't live in the city, so it is about 30-40 mins to each accpointment but, of course, we want to maximize our chance of conceiving the first time!  For accupuncture, I assume most places would know what to do for fertility treatments... I have never had it before, so don't really know how it works.

Definitely seek out someone who specializes in infertility. They will do specific points to help things move during specific times of your cycle. There's about three windows each cycle where it's optimal to go for your acupuncture.

My acupuncturist/naturopath recommended I take: omega 3, vitamin d (2000iu per day) ubiquitol (or coq.10 the dosage differs depending which one you take), prenatal vitamin, colic acid and melatonin (assists with egg quality).

I took these for 3 months before my ivf. I have pcos which can cause poorer quality eggs. I also did acupuncture 1 per week and worked out religiously.

I am currently 36 weeks pregnant with 1 baby. I'm not sure if the supplements helped the ivf as it was my first ivf, however I would have stood on my head and danced the jig if someone told me it could possibly help.

Hope this is of assistance! Good luck!!

My Dr. told me not to take Co Q10 or Royal jelly.  I have good levels, lots of follicles etc so she didn't think I needed help with eggs and said with the little data they have, she suggested I not take them.  I am taking the C0Q10 but in a smaller dose.  After cylce one, if they say my eggs are good, but we don't get pregnant, I will consider skipping it next time.  But, if there are issues with my eggs, I would rather have some in my system, working on making some nice eggies :)

My doctor was very conservative with supplements in my previous cycles. He said folic acid, prenatal and that's it! I know hear he has come around to recognizing that Ubiquinol (co-enzyme q10) cannot hurt and many of his colleagues think it helps. Based on my previous results with egg quality I definitely intend on giving it a try next time around.

My question is... to all the people who have or are taking it, is it an out-of-pocket expense for everyone, or does anyone have a doctor that prescribes it? I noticed in another thread Dr. Fiona said she had prescribed Ubiquinol before to patients. I had assumed since it isn't 100%  results proven that it is a choice to take it and therefore couldn't be a prescription submitted for claiming. But after reading that (and seeing the cost!) I thought I'd check to see if anyone's doctor or clinic did prescribe it... thanks for any responses :)

I think my doctor would be ok for me to take it if my eggs were not good.  I have lots of follicles so she suspects that I will be fine.  She was totally fine with hubby taking it though.  She just didn't want me taking extra stuff if I didn't need it since there isn't enough information yet.  I am not sure if she would have prescribed it though.  She didn't prescribe any vitamins - I am paying all out of pocket (spent around $400 so far on supplements).

Even if a Dr prescribes it, it is a natural health product and most plans won't cover it.  I paid out of pocket and will not claim on income tax either.  You apparently can't claim accupuncture on income tax either.....bummer....

That is another thing I wish I could claim! I have never used physio but have allowance for that, but years of acupuncture to try and get periods back on track and maintain a pregnancy cannot be claimed.
