Hi out there,

Just wondering if there are any other type 1 diabetics undergoing IVF?  I was diagnosed when I was 29. Just wondering if you have any wisdom to share about how IVF meds impact your blood sugars, whether or not you are on a pump, if you use continuous glucose monitoring......  Also curious if your RE mentioned whether or not diabetes could be the cause of your infertility woes???

Thanks so much!

Yes. I did 6 injectables iui 2 fresh ivf and one frozen. Had one bfP which ended in mc. Was diagnosed with type I at 34 after reviewing all the failures. Went On injections at first. Did iui to see how it affected sugars (minimal) and got bfP! He is now almost 3! We just started trying for #2 (I was breastfeeding still and can't take fert drugs). I'm 14dPo but pretty sure it's bfn neg poas.
Me 38 DH 38 TTC x 9 years IUI with injectables x 4 BFN endometriosis surgery BFP March 2007 with IUI, m/c at 8w2d:( 2 more IUI, BFN IVF 1 and 2 BFN FET 1 BFN discovered I was a Type I diabetic (WTF?) started insulin failed adoption of Baby Boy May 2009 (mom changed her mind via Text Message) back to the clinic IUI #7 BFP, Baby boy E born at 37w via induction (placental abruption)July 18, 2010 8lbs4oz doing great! took a break to breastfeed until 2012 (only part of this that ever came easy for me) TTC #2 January 2013 IUI 1B, 2B, 3B BFN IVF #1B BFP but slow and low betas, m/c one twin 6w, lost the other one at 9w FET #1B Feb 19, 2014 transferred last two embies. BFP - praying this one works out because I think we are done with ART otherwise.

Wasn't done yet..
Fert tx wasn't hard as type I but pregnancy was BRUTAL! I went on pump and Cgm after so next time should be easier. I was nauseous all the time and kept my sugars below 7 all the time which left me low and tired alot. There is a good book about "managing the sweetness within" about type I and fertility tx and pregnancy.

Oh wow!  Thanks for sharing.  I have heard that pregnancy can be brutal with type 1 diabetes...  I've heard stories of how the lows can be more frequent and that worries me a bit.  I have a pump and CGM now so hoping that it helps when I do end up starting the IVF process.  Good to hear that the actual IVF meds shouldn't impact my blood sugars too much.

All the best in your journey!!

I did notice that the stims part of my cycles didn't really affect my sugars too much but elevated progesterone is wreaking havoc this time (maybe it did before but I wasn't on a CGM so I didn't notice as much).  The second half of my cycle I was more insulin resistant and had to increase my basal rates by about 10%.  I have ovarian cysts after my BFN and they are keeping my progesterone elevated longer into this next cycle and I'm still having elevated rates.  Either that or I'm eating stuff I shouldn't be (cookies etc) because Im upset that it was bfnrolleyes.gif

Oh that is a good point... I typically increase my basal slightly just before my period when the progesterone is higher, so I guess that it might when I am taking the progesterone during IVF.

FYI, I feel that you are totally justified in eating as many cookies as you like ;-)

I just realized that I had never been on a pump or CGM when I wasn't breastfeeding still and had a Mirena IUD so I had no periods until about 3 months ago.  That is why I never had to adjust my basal depending on where I was in my cycle.  Now I know.
