Ok, so I am 3 days into fragmin injections... and they burn. After 3 weeks I will be adding lots more injections as we start the actual IVF meds. So far, DH is giving me the injections but later this month he has to go away for work and I will either have to be able to do the injections myself, start asking random strangers on the street for help, or hide-away in his suitcase. giggle.gif

I'd really appreciate any tips or tricks you all have for injections.

I'm not familiar with fragmin injections, but do yo mix a liquid with powder? If yes, or if you have to later in your protocol with another drug I found that if you mix it, let it sit 5 minutes (I would do my other shots) and then come back and inject the mixed one,it didn't sting as much. I also "warmed" up any liquid ones kept in the fridge to my body temperature right before injecting? Just stuck it in my armpit or top of pants (specifically for gonal f pens). Of course slow down the actual injection, push it so slow? Hope that helps, best of luck!

I was afraid of injections too, but it isn't as bad as you think.  Some injections sting and others don't, but it depends on the person and type of injection.

First, before I do the injection I put ice on the area I'm going to inject for a few minutes to numb the area.  Second, you have to swab the area with an alcohol rub and make sure the alcohol rubbed area is completely dry before injecting b/c that can cause a burning sensation if the alcohol hasn't dried.  Third, when the needle is steady then you're less likely to get bruises, so try to have a steady hand.  It can be helpful to be sitting down instead of standing up.  If you do get a bruise it isn't harmful at all it could just mean you hit a capillary.

Use a different injection site every time you do an injection.  You can use the stomach or the thighs for most injections.  Sometimes the injection is a bit painful, but it usually just feels like a pinch and the pain should subside quite quickly.  If you have ongoing pain from the injection or the fluid then I would contact your clinic.

Best of luck.

I am also afraid of needles, I did all my own though b/c Dh is also afraid and I liked the control of doing them myself. I asked my clinic if I could use Emla numbing cream(over the counter), they said it probably wouldn't help but wouldn't have an effect on the meds. I did use it some, I think mostly for my 2nd cycle, and found it helped alot since I atleast couldn't feel the actual needle. I think my clinic thought I was being ridiculous but I thought hey whatever helps you through, and just about everyone is afraid of something. If you told me even a few years ago that I would give myself shots I would have fallen over..Fwiw- I always used my belly and alternated sides. Good luck if I can do it anyway can smile.png

I'm not familiar with Fragmin though, just stims and one additional shot a night in my 1st cycle that I don't remember the name of..

Thanks ivf4pgd.

Fragmin is a low molecular weight heparin (blood thinner). I have a blood clotting disorder so I had to start taking it when I started taking BCP. It comes in prefilled needles for sub-cutaneous injections. DH has been injecting it slowly but it still burns. I am really scared that the actual IVF meds are going to hurt this much too.

Fragmin I heard is one of the stingier drugs you can take, so the good news is that you hit the worst one first so it can only get better ;-)   Some women have iced the area and said that helps quite a bit.    I find if you get a good pinch of skin in your fingers it seems to numb the area temporarily.   Also, it hurts a little less if you inject it in very slowly (just what you wanted to hear right? ;-) )

Fragmen hurts more than the Ivf drugs I had to inject. I'm getting it daily as I deal with OhSS so don't worry, it will get easier. Do it quickly but don't jab yourself too hard or it will hurt and bruise.

Me - now 36 Him - 37
Trying to conceive since our wedding day May 25, 2008.
Started Clomid Jan-April 2012.
Referred to RFP June 2012.
First consult at RFP November 2012.
First IVF cycle on antagonist protocol (GonalF, Luveris) January 2013.
Transferred two day-3 embryos, had severe OHSS, lost one twin between 7-13 weeks but was expecting one little one October 2013.
Found out at 6 mos that our little one had died weeks earlier and had to induce and deliver stillborn, July 25, 2013.
Something found on adrenal gland at follow up ultrasound, MRI showed what seems to be a benign tumor. Meeting with specialist Jan 8, 2014 - all fertility treatments on hold. :/
Tumour is definitely producing Aldosterone (causes high blood pressure) and Cortisol. Lucky me, only 34 similar cases recorded in the world! Tumour removed May 2014.
Approached about a possible adoption March 2014. Rush through all the paperwork and process.
Charlotte Evangeline born June 27, 2014. We brought her home on July 7 and held our breath for 10 days until she officially became ours.
Surprise BFP October 2014. Due to wonky cycles, ultrasounds convince Doctors I have a blighted ovum but detailed ultrasound reveals heartbeat at 6w3d. On progesterone support and waiting to see if pregnancy is still viable. Holding our breath again.
Adalyn Marie born on June 9, 2014 after a roller coaster pregnancy.

agree with vball-get a good bit of skin and give it a good squeeze, plus ice pack it for a GOOD 3-4 min ahead, super numb.  I only ever did my belly, found a few spots a bit stingy but helped with longer icing.  Other trick is to make sure the bevel is up on your needle, and like a dart, no slo mo with inserting it.

Thankfully most IVF meds dont really hurt or sting at all.  I think you will be pleasantly suprised with them :)

I was mainly on Puregon and it was a peice of cake.  I found it alot better doing the injection myself vs. my husband as you have control over how quick and slow you want to do it.  I also found the anticipation of him doing it worse.

Best of luck !!

I did all my own injections, as DH is quite needle-phobic. If at all possible, make sure the clinic gives you the smallest needle size possible with your IVF meds. Those diabetic needles are so tiny that they just practically glide in. I'm pretty sure that is what comes with the Gonal-F pens, but maybe you can ask ahead of time about getting those for all your injections. I always used the belly, grabbing an area of skin and it was over like that. Stinging meds are the worst but I had few of those and I hope you do too. Good luck!

Hi ,

I was taking Heparin after my cycle and found it to be much more stingy than the IVF drugs!!, I was also needle phobic, but agree with the others who said that doing it myself was a lot easier than allowing someone else!!!  The Gonal F pens are a breeze!!! you don't even feel the needle!!! The mixed drugs are a little more daunting-but again after a time or two you will be fine, I used to inject in my "pudgy bit" that piece fat just under your belly button, pinch the skin together and push at a 45 degree angle (for the mixed drugs gonal F is straight down!) I found that by the end of my cycle I was doing it without a thought!!! And you're going to be so excited to get to your trigger shot you don't even worry about that one!!!

Good luck with the needles and your cycle :D

There are also alternate options to the progesterone in oil needles so if you aren't up for those, you can ask for suppositories.

I've had issues with needles for years, but thanks to the counselling we were doing as part of our IVF cycles, I was able to get through them a lot differently. Even knowing how fine the needles were, and how little pain they'd cause, I was very anxious during our first cycle when it came to getting the needles. There were more than a few tears shed. But then we talked to our counsellor, and that really helped me out. She reminded me that an injection is just a moment in time, and we don't have to like them. But we can get through them - we have in the past, and they only last for a few seconds. Focusing on breathing helped me too. (I do a lot of yoga anyway) I'd close my eyes, breathe deeply and focus on what those injections were giving us hope for.

Good luck. :)

Sounds like you've received a lot of good advice here.

I would definitely say to make sure you warm it up to body temperature first, as I have found that does take the stinging away for me. The mixed always seems to be a little more painful than the GonalF pen. As others have said, make sure the alcohol is dry and I find doing it slowly makes any stinging less noticeable.

Just a note as well - where we are, if we are unable to give ourselves the injections, we do have the option of going to any walk-in clinic and they will give it for us. It's a bit extreme, but if you have absolutely no other options, I guess it's something to consider.

Thank you all so very much!! I now have some things to try... and if all else fails I can look into walk in clinics for while my DH is away.

I can't even begin to imagine how women used to do this before the community of this forum was available. Information and support seem to be in limited supply at the clinic (somewhat understandable given the sheer number of patients they see). I am grateful for the knowledge and experience available here.

Just wanted to add to the above suggestions.  I am deathly afraid of needles, I have fainted before due to hyper-ventilating its really bad :(

The best thing that could have happened was being introduced to Emla patches!!!!!! With all the needles in my stomach and blood work ETC this is the best kept secret there is.

Go to any Shoppers Drug Mart or Pharmacy and ask for these they numb the entire area after only 20 minutes of application!!!!!

I am telling you its been a God sent for me and I am sure it will be for you as well :)

Enjoy and spread the numbing word :)

Just a little update...

DH has been away since Monday and I have successfully been giving myself 4 injections/day. yahoo.gif Never thought I would be able to do it...and I might not have if it wasn't for the tips and support of all you lovely ladies. Thank you!!!

This is what I've learned (just in case anyone reads this thread in the future looking for tips):

The cheapest place to by the 30g tube of Emla is Costco. I first bought the small 5g (I think) pack that came with 2 Tegaderm patches (super thin transparent dressings). It said to use half of that small tube and 1 dressing for each application... you do NOT need that much, only about a large pea size blob and 1/4 of the bandage. I also found boxes of Nexcare Tegaderm  dressings at Shoppers Drug Mart (6 in a box, cut each one in 4). I leave the Emla and covering on for about 45-60 minutes. Bonus tip- buy one with a distant expiry date and you can use it on your baby when you take them for vaccinations. smile.png
