Hi, I haven't had a period since October.  My cycles have always been irregular but they are getting longer and longer. I'm 38 and have to lose a lot of weight.

My MD started me on Metformin, 1000 mg a day, about three months ago but I guess isn't working.  Just curious how long it took for you to see results on Metformin?  Is 1000 mg too low, espec. if I have a lot of weight to lose?

THanks

I don't remember the dose I was on, but took Metformin for ? around 4 months quite a few years back. I didn't make many other changes and lost around 10 lbs seemingly just from the Metformin, it just made me not hungry. Wishing you lots of luck!

I take 1000 mg of Metformin, split into 2 500 mg pills, one in the morning and one at night. It took about 2 months, but since taking the metformin I have had regular cycles and lost a bit of weight.

I've been on 2000mg for about 3 weeks now, have lost about 6 pounds. Won't find out for another few weeks if the meds have affected me insulin levels or not. I'm also on Femera to ensure I get regular periods.

Well it took a long time to kick in but after 6 months of taking 1000 mg of metformin my periods returned. Pretty darn regular too.  28 to 30 day cycles.  They are shorter than I used to have like 3 to 5 days but the doctor says that's ok as long as they start!

I've been on metformin for a while but don't know if it's done anything for my weight or insulin levels.

I've found the only thing that gives me a regular cycle (after going for over a year at a time without one) was acupuncture. Not sure this really means I'm ovulating though.

Referred to RFP June 2012.
First consult at RFP November 2012.
First IVF cycle on antagonist protocol (GonalF, Luveris) January 2013.
Transferred two day-3 embryos, had severe OHSS, lost one twin between 7-13 weeks but was expecting one little one October 2013.
Found out at 6 mos that our little one had died weeks earlier and had to induce and deliver stillborn, July 25, 2013.
Something found on adrenal gland at follow up ultrasound, MRI showed what seems to be a benign tumor. Meeting with specialist Jan 8, 2014 - all fertility treatments on hold. :/
Tumour is definitely producing Aldosterone (causes high blood pressure) and Cortisol. Lucky me, only 34 similar cases recorded in the world! Tumour removed May 2014.
Approached about a possible adoption March 2014. Rush through all the paperwork and process.

Surprise BFP October 2014. Due to wonky cycles, ultrasounds convince Doctors I have a blighted ovum but detailed ultrasound reveals heartbeat at 6w3d. On progesterone support and waiting to see if pregnancy is still viable. Holding our breath again.

JacMac - do you temp?
It's my understanding that if you don't ovulate, you won't get your period as there is no corpus luteum to produce progesterone to kick start it.

No I don't temp but we still never managed to get pregnant or maybe we did and I had an early miscarriage. My cycles were anywhere from 18-55 days last year, so perhaps that long one was a pregnancy.

My longest cycle this year was 70 days.. I definitely wasn't pregnant.
Temping will show you if you ovulate or not. If you're not being monitored it's the most accurate way to determine if you did ovulate or not.
FX everything is ok with your adrenal gland!

Ugh, I've given up on trying naturally after 5 years of trying and spending this last year on IVF. I'd rather just leave sex as something for tun than worrying if we're doing it at the right time.

Temping isn't used to determine when you wil ovulate but I'd you have or not.
We can relate with the longtime trying.. 13 years here, 3 years undergoing ART.

I did not ovulate even though I was having a period, even on clomid and low doses of femara. The cycles were monitered(bloodwork) bd cycles with meds. Did temp and ovulation tests, before seeing my endocrinologist poor results. Irregular cycles overall, usually 40 days. After stopping bc it took a yr for me to have a period, crazy how the body works. I'm not on metformin, I was given a rx for it after the stillbirth of my son (sugar was elevated), dr feels I do not need to be on it(sugar is normal range). Every dr has a different opinion, right now my cycles are driven by fertility treatments so i have not pushed to be on metformin. Is anyone on metformin as a preventive measure for diabetes? Sorry if this is a ramble:) just off from nights, brain is shutting down

Hey lesley1978, I am not diabetic and have normal blood sugar levels although I am insulin resistant which means my body just doesn't use the insuling it does make very well.  In my case, the metformin is used to regulate my excessive androgen levels (male hormones), weight and to regulate my cycles/restore fertility.
OPKs have never worked for me and don't for a lot of cysters and it sounds like you may be been experiencing breakthrough bleeding. A good (laymans terms) explanation of bleeding without ovulation can be found here. http://goaskalice.co...thout-ovulating.
Do you use hormone replacement therapy such as progesterone or BCP to start your bleeds (whether they are breakthrough bleeds or menses)?

If I am cycling for fertility and a period is no where in sight I have used provera to kick start a cycle, right now bc to have regular bleeds. The nurse that suggested metformin was a diabetes nurse and with pcos insulin resistance its common to lead to type 2 diabetes. That is what i ment by preventive.I'm not diabetic just elevated for short period of time after birth and before treatment of obstructive bowel, due to umbilcal hernia. The nurse did not know why i was not on metformin to help with pcos symptoms. Have you heard about victoza, i was curious if it had better results with resolving pcos symptoms. I was reading it was an alternative to metformin. Well if they are breakthough bleeds they are the same as when I ovulate, no spotting mid cycle, average length .

I've been on metformin for almost a year. I mentioned to my doctor last month and she said it was ok 'as long as I was still having periods'.  I'm on 1000 mg a day. Not sure if it matters but I weight 237. I often wondered if the dose was too low?

Well the metformin seemed to stop working for me.  I went from 30 day cycles to two months plus. I talked to my doctor and she told me that 1,000 mg was the 'maximum' she could prescribe for PCOS.  Any one else hear about that?  I mean 1,000 mg daily, 2 pills x 500 mg a day.  I got my prescription refilled and was surprised that she doubled my dosage to 2,000 mg a day.  2 pills twice  day. I called her clinic and asked if it was a mistake and never got a response.  So I decided to take the plunge. Instead of 2,000 mg a day I just increased my dosage to 1,500 mg, taking one 500 mg pill three times a day. No side effects etc.  It seems to be working.  I'm back on a 30 day cycle for the first time in months.  Wonder if I should up the dosage to the 2,000 mg she prescribed? I've only been taking the 1,500 mg for one month.

On a positive note my weight is now down to 218.  Can't wait to be in the '100s' again.  I am eating better but have to wonder if the metformin is helping out.
