Not my dx but just wanted to send you a virtual hug. Getting diagnosed is heartbreaking and scary. Once you wrap your head around the treatment options it's exciting! With ivf they take the eggs right from the source so no tubes required!!! You've come to the best place ever for support :) we are all here for you! I pray your journey is a short one from here on.

Well the good thing is that now you know what the problem is and that they are ways around it to still have babies :) Do they know the reason the tubes are blocked? I had a tubal reversal and every test has shown my tubes open but we have been unable to conceive on our own so have moved on to IVF. You have found a great site with a lot of supportive people here for you.

babymomma - I had a hysterosonogram earlier this year which was "inconclusive" so they wrote in my chart that both tubes are blocked. They may or may not be blocked, the test was unable to tell. I remember being so shocked and upset because we had gone in to the clinic with a male factor diagnosis. For me, it really meant nothing because we had to do IVF anyhow because of my husband's diagnosis. Also, if you live in Ontario, you get 3 free successful cycles of IVF paid for by OHIP. That's a plus that not many people are granted and for which I am extremely grateful. Not everything is paid for, but it certainly helps with the finances.

We underwent our first IVF with ICSI in early September and I'm currently 19 weeks pregnant. There is hope and like ValleyGirl said, with IVF your tubes are not necessary anyhow. Depending on the reason why your tubes are blocked (ie scarring, fluid, etc) it may have no impact whatsoever on you conceiving. :)

I had a hsg with this iagnosis then a lap surgery to confirm. At surgery, they were open. I'm now waiting to decide after a further surgery to do a follow up hsg, given it will be a year without success and our iui was not successful.

babymomma, I am so sorry. I know how it feels. Are you in Ontario?

I have one hydrosalpinx on the left and a blocked tube on the right. It's terrifying, but I am having the left tube removed next week and likely clipping the right one (unless the surgeon decides otherwise once she gets in there). I don't think I can face another ectopic pregnancy. Hopefully this has not happened to you.

We'll do IVF after that.

Sending you big hugs.

Sorry to hear your tubes are blocked. I had mine taken at my last csection as the doc said for cancer now adays they take them instead of tying them or taking a piece.
I have read so many posts on this site as to living in Ontario or Quebec and Ottawa that you guys get ivf paid for(or some) ..so lucky, I'm in bc Ruth extended health coverage as well and nothing is covered.
We are on our first and only ivf and have spent 12000 out of pocket :(
Good luck to you..I hope ivf works :)
Me 40 DOR
Dh 44
I had a planned full tubal ligation (took both tubes out) when my last baby boy was born 19 mths ago through planned c-section sept 20.2011.
Me: have a 21 yr old son, 10 yr old daughter, 19 mth old son.
Dh: has a 22 yr old daughter and our 19 mth old son.

Antagonist protocol jan 2013' first and only ivf started (as we thought only one :() They got 5 eggs and none fertilized (icsi was not done as recommended, consented to, and paid for)
Next cycle will hopefully start (fingers crossed) feb or march 2013.

Feb 21/13- day 2 of AF. 5 follicles on one side and possibly none on the other..DOC keeping me on antagonist protocol but has added 3 days of clomiphine citrate. Something about adding a MOS protocol to my antagonist protocol. Clomid for 5 days 2 pills a day & on cd3 started 300 bravelle & 150 menopur shots. Us & bw feb 27. Cd6 angry as heck! ONLY 2 follies supposidly found on both sides now...wtf???Feb 27. Cycle cancelled Gggrr we will see for next month :(

March 22.13~went to day 4 ultrasound this morning expecting my cycle to be cancelled cause two days ago re wasn't sure if I had a large follicle or a cyst. It was really hard to drive 1 1/2 hours then wait..and wait. Anyhow, I couldn't believe it when he told me we are going ahead. I think I almost cried tbh. I have 7 follies at this point. He's keeping me on the clomid for 3 more days and then I start injections tomorrow cd5. 300 bravelle and 150 menopur. I definetly am felling much better this afternoon then I did when I woke up :)

March 25.13~5 days of clomid and 2 of injections. Out of the 7 follies (1~12, 1~11, 1~10, 1~8 & 3~6) he figures we only have a shot at the 3 large ones and the small ones won't catch up. Cycle cancelled again:( I'm so mad and disappointed. Not sure if I can do another month

April 16.13~cd2 ultrasound showed 7 follies but..at this point we have 2 leaders at 6-7mm and the others are 3-5. Clomid cd2-cd4 and 300 bravelle 150 menopur cd3 & cd4. Us/bw Friday April 19. Grow my little follies grow! I can't be happy till after Friday.

In November I had HSG showed i have Hydrosalpinx on both left and right. Dr did not even recommend Lap surgery as he said I was very high risk for ectopic I have now been referred to IVF/ICSI. Dr says I may have to have both removed....but has not given me a definite answer. So I sit here wondering why I the Dr had not scheduled me into have removed now to speed up the process (recovery ect) This site has been my saviour everyone is very encouraging. I am devastated but now know why I was having such a hard time, which gives me relief. Keep faith.

Keepfaith, I'll let you know how the surgery is! My understanding is that you can start with IVF almost right away after a two week recovery.
Have you researched the pros and cons of removing a hydro before trying IVF?

Babymomma, how are you doing?

I had hydrosalpinx in my left tube and had it removed in October. The surgery wasn't too bad. I was sore for a few days and was given two weeks off work to rest up. In my research, I found that even with IVF the chances of success were only about 10% with hydrosalpinx as apparently the fluid can affect the embryo. We would have been able to start IVF quickly, except that my doctor left the clinic and my new one decided some additional tests were in order. Between that and the holidays I am just starting now. Overall though recovery is quick and it's not long before you can start trying again.

The worst part was waiting for the surgery. Seemed to take a while because I was referred to a surgeon at a different practice.
Finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel.

If at First: yes I have researched removing hydro before IVF mainly the pros and feel it is in my best interest. As for Cons I haven't seen really anything other than with any surgery there are risks.

ilovemydog: I am pro getting both removed/clipped.. as i want to do everything possible to give optimal chance of IVF to be success....as i want to speed up process. But you would think DR would have scheduled me to do so before I go for consult with IVF. Instead as of now I am to wait 3-4 months for consult with IVF DR.....wait for them to tell me I must remove.....wait again for surgery/recovery. I want to be proactive.

Hi BabyMomma,

Our story is similar, my partner and I had been trying for five years too and found out last year that both my tubes are blocked (the doctor then later said it could be that or that my types are constantly spasming and that they egg could not get through). I am trying IVF for now and then when the funds run out, I will look into getting my tubes unblocked. It was heart wrenching when I learned the news. I went into a bathroom and cried. Then went back to find out what my next step was. This is not an easy road, but it will be all worth it in the end. Good luck to you and if you need to talk or a shoulder. Send me an email.

It's so true... I am NOT an aggressive person but I have learned over the past 3 years that you have to speak up and demand what you need when it comes to your health and fertility. As soon as I knew my tubes were blocked, I made the appt to see the surgeon myself instead of waiting on my RE to see me and refer me there. I didn't want to be waiting months and months.
Keepfaith, good luck! Keep calling and bugging them to see if you can get in early! It's a quick day surgery.
