Hello all,
I wanted to start a new support thread for all us ladies 40 or over and about to start a new cycle. I have been on this IF rollercoaster for 5 years now and here I am at 40 about to try YET again. I am one of the lucky ones...IVF did work for me once and I have a beautiful 22 month old daughter. I am hoping that I can be blessed just one more time. This will be my sixth attemp...I know that maybe I am delusional and testing my luck but I really feel like if I try just one more time that this will be the one!!! My last IVF was a bfp that ended at 11 weeks,that was in may. I am going in tomorrow for a hysteroscopy to make sure everything is ok so I can try one more time in January or Febuary.
So...Anyone planning a cycle in the next few months and want to join me in some team support? With my last succesful cycle I really found that chatting with other women going through all the same stuff at the same time helps alot!!

Hi Alwayshope,

I find that the thread "over 40 and pregnant or trying to be" is where anyone about to cycle posts, and it has a nice "community". It is nice as there is continuity and support on an ongoing basis for all stages. BFPat this age also can have more worries requiring support.

I will be cycling in Jan (I hope)! My first IVF was successful (10yrs ago) .. Hoping to pull it off one more time!!

I will be on the short protocol... Call in cd1 and stim start cd3 or soemthing like that.. Low dose Puregon 150iu..

it is so far away, I find it hard to get excited about!!

January DOES seem like a long way away! wow, you did ivf 10 years ago...are things much diffrent now? I can start my next day one but that will be around December 22 so no good because the clinic closes a few days for the holidays,so....I have to wait until Jan 22nd or somewhere around there. I am taking the time to try to get my body in better shape. Drinking lots of raspberry leaf tea (seemed to help with my last bfp) and doing yoga!! Trying not to eat any junk but not doing too well in that department, christmas is coming along with all the good stuff like chocolate and cookies...too hard to resiste. I am also off coffee

From what I am rreading, IVF seems to be the same other than I was allowed to stay at facility for about an hour or so sleeping after they did the transfer... I was soo high & groggy... They put a nice warm blanket on top me and I slept.. i hear today with most women, you're out of there pretty quick!!

I am not changing anything I do, other than taking folic acid.. i still drink coffee... Half decaf so far!,

My cycle will also be in Feb, not Jan.. Cd one for me should be Feb 1st & I start stims on cd3 or maybe 2??

I'm 40 years old, I have one son who is 4 years old that was concieved naturally but no luck to give him a sibling the last 4 years. I'm on my one and only IVF cycle because our insurance only covers one time. I had the embryo transfer yesterday and I am so worried about the embryos, I am even afraid to sneeze fearing they won't implant. I know it's rediculous. I ran some errands today and now I feel terrible guilt about it, like I should have been laying perfectly still on the couch. Does anyone else worry that much? I have two more frozen embryos so I am hoping if this cycle doesn't work we will have another chance with the frozen ones. It would be interesting to keep in touch with some other ladies that are similar age going through IVF right now.

hey.. Don't worry .

After my embryo transfer, I slept for about an hour in the chair, got up and took a 4 hour grey hound bus ride home

both embryos took, lost one about 4-5 weeks the other is my gorgeous son!!

they say the lining is like peanut butter for the embryos & they won't fall out..

How many embryos did you transfer?

I was the same way. I felt quilty even going to the washroom!!!!! crazy I know. My doctor said nothing I do will dislodge it if it is in but the mind plays tricks. I really believe the most important thing is to try and not be too stressed. easier said than done. Good luck artsy,

Thanks everyone! They transfered 2 embryos, they had a tv screen and I could see the embryologist suck them up into the transfer tube, that is a sight that will be burned into my memory! LOL I am paranoid about going to the bathroom too!!! They are so precious, I just want them both to latch on. I'm walking around on eggshells, I think I will be like that for the next two weeks! I thought the 5 days waiting for the transfer took forever, but at least I could call and see how they were doing. Now I don't know, it's really hard.

Alwayshope and MeAgain...I'm in the same boat as you ladies. I'm 42, and will be starting another fertility treatment next cycle. This cycle, I'm on the estrogen patch for the last part of my cycle (I have very short cycles, 21-25 days and ovulate on day 8 or 9, so they are trying to make my follicles mature longer). I'll be starting with the Puregon sometime in late January. We've been trying for four years, and have had three miscarriages, so I am really hoping it works this time!!! Maybe being on these forums will bring good luck and positive energy. I'm actually really looking forward to the estrogen patch - the last time I was on it I had so much energy and felt like I was 20 again!

Hi Ladies! I am 40 (will be 41 in April).
I just did my first IVF and I am one day past retrieval. The Embryologist called this morning, and said of the 5 Eggs they collected yesterday, 4 of them were mature. 3 have fertilized with ICSI and they said possibly the 4th may as well (they are keeping an eye on the 4th). I am at home resting today, as I was quite bloated and sore last night. Feeling ok today, but decided to stay home & relax a bit.
We are doing a 3Day Tranfer on Saturday. I am excited..and nervous. I've been TTC for 10 years...Good luck to all!

hi, it's going to be happening.  after 2 months of doing nothing but reading forums etc. i am going to be doing IVF!  i went to an orientation, then consultation at another clinic, doing their orientation, then a follow up appt. feb. 6.  this day, i think i'll be given my IVF TREATMENT PLAN.  i've read how important it is to have a support group  OR do mind/body stuff.  i'm waiting for my husband's karyotype results and i pray he does not have Klinefelter's.  the urologist said his sperm is 56% good.

 

what a dreadful time this has been.  Ladies, please be positive and i will be joining you in this forum soon.  Please don't hestiate to ask any questions, i am not an expert at the IVF treatment and stuff but i sure have been reading lots.  i'm scared with the medication i'll be taking.  the injectable needle or whatever it's called is also scary but i've read that it doesn't hurt.

STSG I hope your transfer went well, after retrieval the transfer is a piece of cake (except for the full bladder..yech!)

Mokaloka I have never tried the estrogen patch but I would love to feel 20 again...maybe I should ask my doctor.lol

Wantingour1st I hope this thread brings you luck. This is such a stressful experience, It is nice to have people to chat with who are all going through the same stuff! Don't worry about the needles, they don't hurt too much, for me it is just the act of actually sticking myself that freaks me out. My husband usually does it for me and I just don't look..lol Honestly though....it really is just a pinch. They hurt less than all the blood tests we have to take!

I will be having my day one probably next Sunday so I guess I am starting next week!!!! yikes. This is my 6th time doing this but I am more anxious this time than ever before. I think it is because I know this truly is my last cycle. We simply cannot afford to do another one. If I didn't get pregnant with my daughter on ivf #4 I wouldnt be putting myself through this but I KNOW it can work and so I will try once again. It is sooo worth it all when it works.

I really think being as stress free as possible is a huge help so I will be doing my best to stay calm and just breath! I am so grateful for this site and all you ladies sharing your experiences.

Hi ladies. Waiting for AF to happen and then to call in to my clinic for the next step. This is my third IVF. So hope that three times is a charm. This is a wonderful supporitive group of women, so hoping that 2013 will bring us all what we want.

Hi, Leanne you're at Mt. Sinai also!  i'm happy you already have a daughter and good luck with this #6 try.  wow, that's so much but i wish you all the luck.

 

i thought of private messaging you but maybe others can benefit from my questions.  i was just wondering how dr.s know what treatment (medications, injections) to use.  at the LifeQuest clinic orientation i mentioned Clomid and he said he doesn't use but i see it used from women here.  I'm going to do my ivf (typing that is scary) at Mt. Sinai and i'm pretty sure i saw Clomid in their medication listings.

 

i definately will join in a cycle group ( i think it's called) when i start cuz it's really nice.  also i read a study on it from a Creating Families magazine from Mt. Sinai's office and how support or mind/body stuff truly helps with success. 

 

don't know what the plan will be to have less stress during the 2 week wait i think it is but i'll come up with somethings for sure.  some i thought of so far are: yoga before hand and probably not after the embryo transfer i don't know if it's good to do. watching tv, downloading movies. and i don't know what else yet yikes.

The doctors usually have a good idea about meds. depending on your infertility issues. I think clomid is for iui"s..could be wrong but I took that when I tried an iui many years ago. My Dr adjusts my meds as we progress through the cycle. They see how many follicles you are producing and either increase or reduce the drugs. Mt Sinai is great, do you know who your Dr will be? I have had Dr. Lui and Dr. Arthur. They are both very good.

Hi, i saw Dr. Heather Shapiro.  did i ever cry at my appt. i fought with my husband a bit beforehand, forgot my file with questions and since i was on day 2 of my period they rushed me to get my ultrasound and blood work.  that appt. was a consultation for me to figure out which clinic to go to.  i will be going with them and they seem nice but there's a lot of people. can't say i really liked my consultation with a "fellow" nurse i guess it was.  i look forward to the ivf class next week.

 

they gave me the materials for the ivf class, in it was mind/body alternative therapy places.  did you go to any of them? did you do acunpuncture?  i've had a lot of pain from the acupuncture i got done twice so i think i might go somewhere else but not sure where yet.  thanks

Hello Wanting,

I just wanted to pop on to say hello and to say that acupuncture should not hurt. When done properly there should not be ongoing pain and many people (DH and me) even fall asleep during the procedure.

If you haven't, you should mention it to the practicioner. If it sti hurts, then change. Although I am a big proponent of following one's gut/instincts on such matters.

Wanting..I am sorry your first appointement did not go well. My Husband and I were an hour late for the ivf class when we started, we live in Barrie and the 400 was closed. I was crying my eyes out by the time we got there! There are alot of people at Mt Sinai but they do know what they are doing! It is amazing how many women have I.F. issues!! I tried accupunture for two cycles. Neither of those cycles went well ,cant say it was accupuncture but I dont think the accupuncturist was an expert in accupuncture for fertility...I think that makes a big difference.
