Hi I am new here. Anyone have any advice for High FSH @ 20.5? I'm in Ottawa and my Dr is treating me like a write off :-(
Me 40 (just turned) DH 42
DD 2 yrs (Love of my LIfe)
Oct 2011-IUI #1: 1 folli- canceled :-(
Nov 2011-IUI #2: 2 folli, HCG trigger, transfer, prog tablets = BFN

Dec 2011- break, weird cycle late period, BFP??

Jan 2012- went 4 b/w on Day 1, dx: high FSH 20.5 :-( heartbroken
AF came 2 weeks late... Started femmerra... Let's see what happens. was not asked for follow up, what?!...left and took a vacation.

* So far my DR. At OFC did not even ask for further consultation. She just told me over the phone that if this doesn't work, it's time to throw in the towel! Is it weird to ask for 2ond opinion in same clinic?
*Regrets: Why was I not encouraged to go straight to IVE in October 2011 when my AFC was 8-10!! (so what if 2 short of 12 min.! Had no idea that was a possibility) arrrrggg!

Feb. 2012- IUI #3: natural cycle, HCG triggar, insemination mistimed (thanks a lot) - BFN

*Switched Drs*
-After a lot of soul searching and encouragment from previous Dr.s assistant, took referral for second opinion. Best decision ever! new b/w with new Dr., baseline, FSH 5.5, E2-400s (*sigh*), AFC 6. Waiting for AMH test

Apr 2012- IVF #1-Getting ready for IVF with donor egg- April 2012- DE from sister who is 38 yrs, yikes! (it was all we were comfortable with, she is older but everything looks good-fingers crossed)
May 29- 2 embies ....2WW!
BFN- wasn't meant to be

Heartbeat - I don't have an y experience with high FSH either, but I hope that someone who does will chime in soon. Just to let you know, there are clinics that will work with women who are not ideal candidates. I believe my clinic - Victoria Fertility Centre is one of them.

Have you tried any treatments/medications to attempt to lower your FSH? I hope at least your RE was willing to work with you to try to so that.

Good luck,

Laura

Hi LMC, Laura, and Kiwi. Thanks for your responses. I am in Ottawa ... So Victoria is far. I have forced (practically) my DR to have an appointment with me because I want to discuss options. Luckily a friend of mine is an RE at Genesis and told me to go speak to her.... Maybe I should also post this thread in another forum? Just learning my way around. Thanks so much :-) kiwi- will look at link Thank you

Hi Heartbeat, if you haven't done so yet, look into The Infertility Cure by Randine Lewis... great book, lots of good naturopathic and Traditional Chinese Medicine advice. She has a chapter on advanced maternal age that might be helpful. I am over 40 myself, first time ever trying to have a baby (stayed in my first marriage too long now I've found Mr. Right, trying to crank out a baby before its wayyyy too late) I don't know why this is true, but my FSH and LH are "remarkable" for someone my age according to my RE, and I believe it is because I completely changed my eating, and am using a number of supplements and herbs including:

Myo-Inositol - 1 gm
Co-Enzyme Q10 300 mg in morning plus 300 mg Ubiquinol (bioavailable form of CoQ10) at night
False Unicorn Root Tincture 3x/day (don't use if your LH is high, it raises LH)
Chasteberry/Vitex Tincture 3x a day (raises LH, lowers FSH)
DHEA 75 mg in 25mg 3x a day (bought in the States, can't get it in Canada)
Vitamin B 100 complex (lowers prolactin)
5 mg folic acid
Zinc 50 mg
Melatonin 3 mg at night
Acupuncture
Meditation

What are your Day 3 E2 levels? Might want to look at those as well....

Hi Red Siren- wow that is overwhelming but great. I am open to trying anything! Did you see someone to get those doses or did you self prescribe. I am in Ottawa and not sure where to go to get this stuff. Should I see a naturopath? Thanks so much for this posting. Unfortunately for me my FSH is at 20.5 but that test was done on day 1 as opposed to Day 3. Also can you explain a little more what Dhea is?? Thanks a ton!

There is another board that was lots of info about high fsh. Google 'new high fsh forum'. There are women on there with tons of experience. I've found some great information there. They are mostly in the USA but have lots of recommendations for high fsh friendly doctors if you're willing to travel.

I also ended up going to Victoria (after having an RE at a Toronto clinic "give up" on me). Dr. Hudson is willing to help those of us with difficult cases (high FSH, poor response, etc.). I really can't say enough good things about him and VFC. In Ontario, you might want to look into Markham Fertility Clinic (Dr. Virro). Definitely worth tracking down a doctor who is willing to work with you and individualize your protocol.

Hi Lynter. Wow after my appt with Dr Cleiman
Today in Ottawa, I may just as well bury myself alive in a grave. That was brutal. I wish I could go to VFC but not feesable right now. Is there a protocol that you could share that worked for you? :-) Thanks for your feedback:-)

I know you're in Ottawa but are you willing to do a cycle in Toronto. There are more clinics to choose from. Create is supposed to be more hospitable to "older" patients. Markham Fertility is highly regarded but there's a long-ish waitlist to see Dr. Virro.

Wishing you the best, whichever road you choose.

My FSH is high also. I read a great book called Inconceivable that really helped to change my outlook on my diagnosis. The follow up book The Fertile Female is great also. The author was 42 when she was trying to conceive her second child, and her FSH was 42. Both books help me to combine a natural mind body approach to my fertility and help me to believe and know that I am very fertile. Here is a link to help with IVF.

Did you see my reply. Thanks to you I saw a naturopath and started my regime. I do not have tinctures but pills. All I need is my Dhea and I can carry a ray of hope .... Thanks so much :-)

Best of luck to you.

Thank you so much. I am so touched by the responses. I ordered the books and will try and make myself zen.... Thanks for your suggestion :-)

Hi Lynter- I am new and so did not understand about the quote. Please see my comments posted earlier. Thanks for your help and keep me

Hi Gbas girl. Let's see.eaving town for an extended period of time is difficult right now. .. But will look into Dr Virro. Do I need a referral?

Yes, you will need a referral from a doctor to see Dr. Virro. The wait to see him is approximately 9 months.

Hi Heartbeat,

My protocol was pretty inventive. At my Toronto clinic I got put on a massive dose of Gonal F (450) and got no response, so Dr. H. put me on a low dose protocol (this was also based on my size -- I am very petite -- and the fact that I react oddly to many drugs, even antibiotics).

We did estrogen priming beginning 4 days after my surge until my day 1. On day 3 we started 225 Gonal F and 75 Menopur, then added cetrotide around day 7. I ended up with 7 follicles and 3 eggs, all of which fertilized and made high quality embryos. I also did intralipids after ER. The cycle was successful for me, even though I didn't get pregnant, because I responded. Was planning my second trip to VFC to try it again when I conceived spontaneously. DOR does not necessarily mean poor quality eggs!

In terms of supplements, I was taking CoQ10 for about 6 months prior to my cycle and was still taking it when I conceived. I took only 250-400mg per day because it upset my stomach and I just took a drugstore brand. No idea if it helped, but it clearly did not hurt. I also took Pregvit5 and extra vit D. I was in really good health and physically fit. I did not take DHEA in the 4 months prior to my cycle. I tried it for 2 months before my disastrous high dose cycle and it did not play well with my body. I had a racing heart and my FSH shot through the roof. I did much better without it. Again, I react oddly to a lot of drugs and I know DHEA works well for a lot of people.

Good luck! If you can get down to see Dr. Virro, I think you'd find him similarly creative. You would need a referral. I understand that he is currently taking new patients so you might get in more quickly than his usual timeframe.
