Hi Kristine,
Have you done chromosomal tests on your embryos before transfer? Have you been tested for clotting disorders? Please don't think it is you it is likely the embryos and a matter of finding the right one. It is good news that you can get pregnant but devastating to have to deal with miscarriage so many times. What does your re say?

Kristine- I agree with what dove said abnOrmalities with your eggs are a much more likely reason for your loss but if you haven't had a recurrent loss panel done you should insist. Sadly I have had 2 similar losses to yOurs as well as two chemical pregnancies, with older eggs than yours, ( my RE told me I'd win the 649 before having a live birtth with my own eggs) but can report that there is hope . My 649 win is nursing as we speak;)
Chromosomal testing when it isn't for a known disorder is still experimental. It isnt for sure that it works or that messing with the embryo might adversely affect implantation. But if you are having a hard time trying again due to fear of miscarriage and you make a good number of embryos perhaps it could be worthwhile?

Best of luck

I am 37 and I had started IVF 20 months ago. My husband is 3 years older than I who has been diagnosed with low count and some abnormal sperm. We were having trouble conceiving naturally and so we began the IVF treatments.
I had 4 IVF treatments so far with all being unsuccessful. They all pass the 2 week waiting period after the transfer for the blood test. we go and get ultrasounds and find the heart beat. We then go back and it is usually around 8w or 9w we find that there is no heart beat and I'm off for my D&C.
This journey has been dark and frustrating for me. I'm worried now because I think now that I'm the problem because I can't carry. I know that I can get pregnant, the problem is I can't keep the pregnancy going to a success.
Anyone out there dealing with frustrations like I am and does anyone have any suggestions for me. I'm new to this and I haven't been able to share because no one that I know (family and friends) haven't been through this process that my husband and I are going through.

I know what it feels like to have the heart beat and then lose it. Sorry for your loss.

It could be immunological. They can cause issues that prevent pregnancy or implantation and others can affect a pregnancy from progressing at around that point of the pregnancy.

Dear Kristine, I am very sorry to hear about your struggles. You need to ask your RE to run a repeat miscarriage pannel on you. Make sure to insist that he/she runs an extensive testing that includes all immunological issues (antiphospholipid antibodies, anti thyroid antibodies, NK cells etc), genetic karyotyping of both you and your husband, blood factor mutations, etc. If the extended recurrent miscarriage panel comes back normal, I would do an IVF with pre-implantation genetic screening (aka PGD or PGS or CGH) as it does rule out the aneuploid embryos that will miscarry after implantation. The PGD done on the number of chromosomes (not particular genetic disorder) is not experimental anymore and the results can be trusted.

It is heartbreaking but if they find your issue, there may be a way to treat it for the next round of pregnancy. I noticed that you are in NYC. There are many good doctors there. I hope that you get the attention that you need and find a reason for your losses and move forward to have your family completed the way you dreamed about it. Good luck.

So far no luck with IVF attempts. Hope things take a turn soon.

Right there with you, but mine do not follow a pattern like yours so you may have a better chance of figuring out what is going on, and how to support your next pregnancy. You might want to get a second opinion. It is sometimes better to have someone else look at your results with their fresh perspective.

kristine;

Totally does NOT sound like you are the problem.  The ability to get pregnant, the ability to get to 8 or 9 weeks... NO.  If you can get to that stage, you can carry.

I suspect embryo quality if far more of an issue here.  Some more subtle DNA abnormalities will get to 6-8 weeks (with a heart beat) but ultimately don't work out.

I know it must be incredibly hard, and like you say, dark and frustrating time for you.  But on top of dealing with the loss, please stop blaming yourself.  It's not fair.

Very long journey to this point... 4 years of *all* bad news, *all* the time.

2012 - gave up all hope of a baby

Decided to give one lost try with Dr. L. at Create - best recommendation we've ever received

Dr. L. works his magic...Jan 28/13 - 2 day 5 embryos transferred

Feb 8th; BFP on HPT, Day 17: 1st HCG 562, 6w1d u/s: WE HAVE A HEARTBEAT!! 97!

October 15th 2013 - Our perfect little baby arrives!! We are over the moon!

.

.

FET #1 - Single 5 day embryo transfer on June 17th/14

Protocol same as before: dexa, GCSF for lining, baby ASA, doxycycline, intralipids

June 23rd: BFP on HPT

Cramping and bright red blood on June 24th :o HANG ON LITTLE BEAN!

June 25th: HCG 90, June 27th: HCG 248 July 1st: HCG 1713

July 13th: we have a heartbeat - 118!

Almost 10 weeks of bleeding starting at 12 weeks (to about 21 weeks) - incl 2 large hemorrhages. 10 weeks of worry, thinking every day I've lost the bean. At one point subchorionic is 14cm!! Little fighter hangs on though...

Big scare at 16 weeks; u/s mentions possibility of amniotic bands. Detailed early anatomic scan says no amniotic bands. When u/s is NOT your best friend...

I have had several m/c, all from natural pg.  Then one successful pg from IVF. This last pg I decided I would not have any early u/s done, (against dr's wishes). I have the same theory as Rainbows Promise. I think that an early u/s isn't great for the fetus. This time I waited til 9 weeks, and I'm glad I did.  :)

Dear Kristin, I have to agree with some of the ladies here. I have had 4 M/Cs from IVF cycles. One was a chemical pregnancy and three were at 6-8 weeks. I have done all the panels for immune issues, coagulation issues, sperm fragmentation issues, genetic testings for both of us and the M/C embryos and nothing has given us the answer to what may have caused all the loses. I have to agree that embryo quality does not only end at chromosomes. I feel that for your own ease of mind you should have all the tests for recurrent M/C done but also do not be surprised if everything comes back as normal. The good news is that you can get pregnent but need to find the way to carry in full term :). I hope you find the answer you are looking for soon :).

I don't think early ultrasounds cause miscarriages and I hope they're not too bad for the fetus, as I had multiple ultrasounds while in the hospital for OHSS. Granted they weren't pointed directly at the baby but they were in my abdomen as that's where they had to drain fluid from. I had at least six ultrasounds before six weeks and then one at 7 weeks where we saw two heartbeats but one was measuring a few days behind. At 13 weeks we saw only one heartbeat and one empty sac. She had to do a transvagnal to check my cervix as my bladder wasn't full enough. We're currently at 23 weeks with our baby still growing.

Hi Kristine - I am so sorry for you losses - I can only imagine how painful and frustrating that must be. Have you done any immune testing? Often when there are multiple miscarriges, there could be an underlying immune problem where your body is fighting the fetus. One of the ways to counteract that is with a mix of intralipids, prednisone and fragmin which are meant to suppress your immune system. I had a chemical with my last FET and this is the route I'm taking myself with my current FET. Best of luck - I hope you get to he bottom of this

I totally understand too. After seeing two heartbeats at 7 weeks, one heartbeat at 13 weeks, the baby moving around at 18 weeks and learning he had passed away at 26 weeks. This is not an easy journey, especially when you feel like you've gotten so close. It's hard not to feel like you did something wrong and also to not know what you can do to change the outcomes.

Hi Kristine,

I have a somewhat similar situation. My husband is years older so he is 43 and I"m 38 quickly approaching 39. My husband's sperm  count used to be on the lower side but he quit smoking and took the male fertility vitamins and started exercising so it did improve. And our last wash was in the normal range.

We had been trying all this year and got pregnant with IUI in October and just miscarried last week. Very difficult as you know...I am considering trying IVF with PGS to test the embryo for abnormalities. Like you I can get pregnant but need to have a viable pregnancy and carry it to term. Have you ever thought about doing this or did you have PGS testing in your previous ivfs? Would love to chat more if you also want to message me.
