Over 40 Single TTC IVF

I have been reading and searching the intenet for conversations on being single, over 40 and
TTC. I haven't found exactly what I am looking for so thought I would try to start a new one..
Me:
42 Single
Have gone through investigation cycle, everything looks good, lining, follicles 8 left 5 right, FSH was 5.3 so taking something for that now. I Started DHEA and CoQ10 a week ago.
Since all of your posts have taught me a lot, I determined that although everything looks good, I would move straight to IVF ICSI with donor sperm because of my age.
I really want this and I am hoping to share stories.

You may want to check out the "over 40 and pregnant or trying to be" thread - I found that I had more in common with others over 40 than whether the women were single, married with a DH, a DW etc. - you may find the same - I also know of at least one other over 40 woman who is single and using donor sperm as well - she hangs with us on that thread, too.
Good luck - I hope your cycle works!

Ha ha ha – we are in the same boat-ish. I'm 42, single, using donor sperm, but you've got excellent numbers for women our age. Me less so, ut I think I've still got a chance.
Glad you popped by on the thread, I check it a lot, and yeah the over 40 page is good too.
Good luck on your IVF!

wow same boat for sure. What are your numbers like if you don't mind sharing? It will help me get my head around what I have been told thus far. As far as my 5.3 FSH they actually told me that was high and I am on thyroid pills to get it "under 2.5".

I'm not over 40, I'll be 35 this year, but am single and got my BFP via my first FET from IVF with ICSI and assited hatching after 3 years of TTC, congrats on your decision to move right to IVF, I really wish I had done that sooner. Good luck!

Congratulations! I made my decision to go straight to IVF because of the research I did in forums like this one. There were so many women that said wish they went straight to IVF if they could go back and change. I am thankful there is a place to get this advise. Given my age, I have decided to make a huge investment at a 3 cycle package and go all in.
I am planning to do the ICSI and assisted hatching as well. In my limited knowledge, it seems it increases the odds.
So glad you posted, your much younger but it gives me hope.

I hadn't realized that I wasn't getting email alerts about posts on this thread. Completely missed the fact that you have more in common with me that your age. I'm glad that Sharlene directed you to the over 40 thread too. This thread is nice, but not as active.
So, may I ask how long you've been mulling over your decision? I live in Ottawa, and found a really nice Single Mother's by Choice Support group that welcomes people in the thinking and trying phases. That has been so nice.
I've been at this for two years now. I'm getting tired. I really hope you have success quickly and easily.
Trying for a positive-Wow, you are close!! How are you feeling??

I wanted to have a family including a husband but that didn't happen. Given my age, security now and experience I realized about 6 months ago that I really wanted a little one and I would be darn good at it.
I have a lot of respect for you girls been doing this a long time. It is hard work, emotionally and physically. I am not sure if I could have done the same. I haven't even started my meds and already I am overwhelmed. I have been accepting the odds of success are not very good but I am gonna do what I can!
I am glad you found the support group to help you with your decision. When is your next try at it?

Hi Tardycat!

Hi Sameboat,
Sorry – didn't see this till now. I was in sick bay with a fever for a week – worst flu ever!
As for my numbers... I started this journey just over a year ago (almost 41 then), and my first FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) test was 15 (too high), but my RE gave me the clomophine challenge test, and then my numbers were 9, and then 6, which told him I might respond ok to meds, which I have so far. And FSH of 5.3 is very, very good, so I think you might have 5.3 TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone), and that number may be on the high side, which is why they're getting it down.
What I admire about you is your follicle numbers – they're great! On my last IVF I had 7 visible, 6 stimulated, and 5 were mature. One was empty (happens!), so I got 4 eggs. I was happy with that.
I've had 2 IVFs, and I think AN will agree with me when I say the 7 IUI's I had weren't worth the $ or emotions. I could have the money toward another IVF.
After the 2nd IVF failure, I got a well-meant donor egg speech from my RE, but I think I'm still doing pretty well with IVF, and I want to try again with another RE or clinic that is more open to alternative therapies, or gives more empowerment to the patient to help the process as much as possible. I'll need another FSH test soon, but before then I'll have met with an acupuncturist that specializes in fertility, and IVF, so I'm hoping my FSH won't be out of control the next time I test.
My first consultation with the acupuncturist is March 30, so if you're interested in how it goes, I'll be glad to keep you posted. I kinda wish I'd done this from the beginning.

Sameboat-I'm actually in my 2ww. If this doesn't work I'm at a cross roads, as my RE considers that if 3 IVF's don't work, it isn't worth continuing. And I'm getting awfully tired of miscarrying. In fact, I had two embryos in the freezer, and 4 fresh embyros from this cycle. The advice of my RE and my sister (she's an OB/Gyn) were to leave the two in the freezer and use them for an FET later. But I just want to be done with my own eggs and not have to face more than one likely miscarriage. So all 6 went back in. Beta is on the 25th..
Hmm do I agree the IUIs were a waste? Well, yes and no. I got pregnant on my 3rd try, so I can't say a total "no". I sometimes think if my clinic monitored IUIs with the same degree of interest as an IVF cycle that maybe it would have worked. I have reason to think things were not well timed for me. I also was not emotionally ready to prick myself with needles and go through retrieval without feeling pretty certain that the nice, non invasive method wasn't working. My biggest regret is starting everything so late..
There are some who say that at 42 the odds of success are so low that the difference between IUI and IVF is minimal. But for me, seeing that 2/2 IVFs have at least resulted in a pregnancy, I am not sure I'd agree. I don't think that donor sperm was penetrating my tough eggs unassisted.
Anyways, I'm away for a few days which will help me to lay off the HPTs for a few more days

AN, That is awesome! Did you do assisted hatching this time? I didn't realize you were in 2ww. Hang in there.
I paid for ICSI and Hatching up front. RE said, they make that determinaion once they look at the quality of sperm and egg. I can't help think it will make it better. Trying4positive had her success with using donor, ICSI and hatch. I know one other girl as well. Apparently they hatched only one and that was the one that made it.

My clinic refuses to do AH as their own data suggests it lowers live birth rate. Research says it is inconclusive but suggests it might help...and that it increases the chances of multiples. Identicals in particular are said to be a risk suggesting they may be affecting the inside if the egg... I've had a chemical pregnancy with AH and a clinical pregnancy without it which suggests to me that 1/4 of my eggs likely implant with or without it. While I doubt the AH makes a difference could the procedure have damaged my egg and made it too weak to stick? Probably not but I just don't believe AH is a critical factor. Different views on ICSI too so make sure you RE has clarified the risks with you!

I have read the risks of all and about 20 pages of legal and risks etc for the whole procedure. Scary! I am going to trust the RE and the embrioligist in the moments of decision. I have paid for it just in case they say the eggs need help. Hope this time is your time for success!

You asked about what they're testing for on day 3 – not sure really. I do know they look for estradiol (E2), TSH, prolactin and FSH. I just can't remember which one is day 3... I bet other people will know.
Clinics might be different, but I wasn't tested for AMH (Anti-Mullerian Horomone?) or DHEA whereas some women are.
Wish I knew!
Hope everybody's well!
