Hello,

I wanted to start a thread for all of us who are currently patients at the MFC or will be or are cycling right now. I was hoping we could chat online - there wasn't many members of IVF.ca a couple of years ago who used to be patients with the MOntreal Fertiltiy Centre, but I think in the past while, I've seen more and more new members join, which is great!!

I have an appt for a consult with Dr. Mahutte in late April and can't wait. We are looking at doing IVF#4 (2nd IVF with that clinic) for another baby. We had such a good experience with them and really loved the entire staff who works there! Even though I'm in Ottawa, it's worth the extra time and effort to drive to Montreal instead of staying close to home. I'm just hoping the free IVF in QUebec doesn't cause us any problems or complications. We transferred 3 embroys last time which resulted in a singleton pregnancy..so i"m thinking something similiar this time around. I'm assuming if you are paying, you don't need to follow Quebec's recommendations?? Does anyone know?

I plan on redoing all my tests to ensure we are still good candidates for IVF... I started this process when I was 30 and now I"m 37...so things might have changed. We hope to cycle in August just before I return to work.

Would love to meet others who are also with MFC!

Cheers
Sandi

Hi there. I have been receiving treatment at the MFC since June, and just came across this board today :) I have had 3 IUI's so far, one cycle with timed intercourse, and we have been sitting out since December due to Christmas closure and now cysts. I will be doing my first IVF next month. I am also in the Ottawa area (Aylmer) so we have been doing the drive each time, and we really want to try something that will increase our chances, so have decided to go for IVF.
Me: 25 years old, PCOS
Hubby: 30, no problems

IUI 1: August with Femara, HCG shot and metformin. No luck

IUI 2: September with Femara, HCG and metformin. No luck again

Cycle 3: Femara, HCG, timed intercourse due to Thanksgiving. Nothing

IUI 3: November with Femara, HCG, metformin. Still no luck

December 2010: Clinic closed over Christmas

January 2011: Sitting out this one due to a cyst

February 2011: Ultrasound still shows a cyst, another cycle out :(

IVF 1: beginning medication mid March for our first IVF
Egg retreival April 10. Only 5 eggs retrieved and only 2 mature! Both fertilized but neither divided :( No ET.

IVF 2:
Egg retrieval August 2. 18 eggs retrieved, but only 8 mature with 6 fertilized.
Embryo transfer August 5. Woohoo! One 8-cell Grade 1 embie put in. *fingers crossed*
BFN!

IVF 3:
Egg retrieval: October 13th. 18 eggs retrieved, 13 mature, 12 fertilized.
Embryo transfer: October 18th. One "beautiful" blast put back in.
BFP!!!!!
Beta 1: 10dp5dt......119
Beta 2: 13dp5dt......275 (clinic concerned that it did not double in exactly 48 hours, so third beta scheduled)
Beta 3: 15dp5dt......758 Thank you God! Still in the game!

Well when our IVF at the OFC last August ended with all our embryos arresting and leaving us with nothing to transfer on day 5, I came on the boards and sent Sandibeach a message. You were so helpful and your experience at the MFC gave me so much hope during a very difficult time!

Since then, my husband has had a varicocele embolization at Toronto General and now we are trying to make an appointment with Dr Vause to have a repeat SA done and to get a consult with Dr. Mahutte (maybe also some Femara in the interim). Unfortunately, I've left four messages over the course of two weeks with her medical secretary and have not received a call back. My husband will be calling the clinic manager on Monday. Anyways....enough about the OFC.

We are hoping to try another IVF in Montreal this September. My parents live in Montreal and I believe they are even walking distance to the clinic.

Anyways, I think this thread is a great idea. I'll definitely be checking in! Looking forward to hearing from current MFC or future MFC ladies.

Best,

Emily

Hello Melissa,

Good luck with your IVF... I did 2 IUI's adn 6 rounds of clomid... yes the big guns of IVF are much more effective. Good luck! They are awesome at MFC... how are the wait times for appts and such? It took me a couple days to get through this time to get an appt, but once I got threw, It was quick. Let us know how your IVF is progessing! Hoping your cysts go away so you can start IVF. Any idea when the summer closure is? Have they announced it yet? Last IVF, I had my day 5 transfer on the last day they were open before closing for 5 weeks... had to have my beta done here in Ottawa with my family doctor- it all worked out mind you!

Hi Emily,

Nice to see you back and so glad my words helped!! Have you called MFC to make an appt yet? YOu don't need a referral to make an appt - when OFC sent my referral over, I still had to call myself to actually get an appt time and date. I called over and over again in the afternoon till I got a person - I had left a message, but no one called me back. I had heard since free IVF, it's busier, so I wasn't surprised. Even with longer wait times and more patients, I still think MFC will be worth it. Great that you have family in which you can stay with. I have a dear friend who i can stay with (I did last time), which is great..but I think i'll be doing lots of day trips.

Welcome ladies to this thread!!

Well the wait times to get an appointment dont seem to be too bad, but sometimes the wait for the actual appointments can be long. There have been many times when i have had to wait an hour past my appointment time. So they can be quite busy at times. I dont know when they are closed for summer yet, but i think last summer they were only closed for 3 weeks. I am praying to be pregnant by the time summer rolls around. I wish there was a clinic in Quebec that was closer, because we really hate having to make the drive so many times, but it is the closest to us so we have no choice. The doctors are nice though. Sometimes i would prefer to be at a larger clinic that doesnt close over christmas, over summer, etc, but I take the good with the bad :) i do feel though that they seem to almost be getting more big than they can handle. They have a whole other office across the hall now where they do the IVF's now, so the extra space is good, but its still only the two doctors, and i feel like they are starting to take more patients than they can handle, hence the long waits for your appointment, etc.

That's what I was afraid of... them taking on more than they can handle... having cyled at a big clinic (OFC), trust me, it's not better - much worse... I'd rather deal with the xmas and summer closure than going to a big clinic again. For me it was between MFC and Victoria... i wanted a hands on clinic. Having to wait in a big clinic is fairly normal (sometimes up to an hour and we were all paying patients), you never see the same doctor twice - it's a rotation, one IVF, I never saw my own RE and the RE's don't agree with each other on your treatment... technicians do the U/S, not the doctor... trust me, it's not worth it. I am disappointed to hear MFC might be taking on more than they can handle because of the change in IVF coverage. Since I'm in Ontario, I still have to pay... I just want the same service and skill that I got before and I"ll be happy... I'm hoping to not have to wait 1 hour for an appt... but I guess I'll deal with that when the time comes. If the outcome is the same, I don't care! I'll let you know the difference between this experience and when I went to MFC in mid-2009 (before free IVF).

Well its still nice in the sense that i always know i will see either dr. Mahutte or dr. O and it is them that do the ultrasounds. But having that said, because it is just the 2 of them and they do everything, that is why the waits can be long, because they are so busy doing everything. I enjoy the doctors and i am driving from gatineau anyways so a longer wait in the waiting room doesnt really make much of a difference when i have to allot the whole day to go there anyways. I just worry abut them having more patients than they can handle because it seems already like when you need last min appointments (day 3 scans, etc) they have to double book times, leading the long wait. It will be interesting to see how you find the experience now compared to before. I still like going there (although i have nothing to compare it to) and i am sure you will still be happy there.

Hi ladies,

I'm starting my first IVF cycle at MFC at the end of March/beg. of April if I don't have any cysts. Can someone tell me why it matters if I have a cyst? I'm just curious because my other two clinics never checked.

I'm happy to hear all the positive feedback for this clinic because I'm a little nervous about switching.

Sandi, I don't know for sure but I'm thinking the same as you, if you pay, I don't see why they'd make you follow Quebec recommendations. Unfortunately, Dr. Mahutte is only willing to transfer 2 to me and i'm 40!

Hey. I could be wrong but i think they are closed on Sundays. They try to do uotrasounds during the week butI have been in on Saturdays for scans and IUI before because of how it fell. I thinkit just depends. Not sure about ER/ET but I think it would be the same. If the timing lands on a Saturday then I think they would do it Saturday. I am a little nervous because it looks like my ER/ET might fall around Easter and Im worried about if the clinic is going to be closed for some days. But i guess i will wait and see.

I'm sure they will try to plan it so it doesn't fall on the days they are closed. They can't leave you hanging mid-cycle! So if my day 3 is on a Sunday, I have to wait another month or do you think they'll see me on day 4?

You can go either day 2, 3 or 4. So depending on when it falls, they will see you on either of those days. So if Day 3 would be a Sunday, they would see you either on Saturday or Monday :)

Yes, they do ER/ET on Sat and Sundays... I had my ET on a Sunday and no issues...they don't try to work around it.. they only do what's necessary on the weekends and try to work only in the mornings. Dr. Mahutte told me he's there every day, even if there are no patients, cause he checks the status of the embryos and call his patiens with the status and results... as for starting an IVF, you normally don't need an appt at the clinic, you have the meds and just start. Even with that said, when I had BFP, I had to go in every two weeks for an ultrasound and since I lived in Ottawa, Dr. Mahutte was great enough letting me schedule an appt on Saturday so I wouldn't have to take a day off work... he said that's exceptional and normally doesn't do it... don't worry... he wont' comprimise your cycle so he doesn't need to work a day!! That's why they close twice a year... and if he thought that easter would be a problem, he wouldn't let you start a cycle if he hadn't planned on being available.

Hi Everyone,
It looks like I'm joining your forum! I went for my consultation at MFC on Thursday and I really liked Dr. Ouhila. I can start IVF with my next cycle. The clinic is nothing like McGill or MRC. I'm so glad that I went for a consult. I hope that when I start treatment that I am as pleased with the clinic!

Dr. Ouhila told me that the clinic would be closed when they hit their quota towards the end of June until the end of July.

How are the doctors about recommending time off or a medical leave for the TWW? I am running out of sick days and I would be eligible for a sick leave if I had a doctor's recommendation.

Baby dust to all!

Lisa
Where do I start?

I have an irregularly shaped uterus, I have had a uterine septum removed, I have an endocervical folds that are most probably causing persistent fluid in my uterus, I had chronic endometritis for over a year, a luteal phase defect, I had two dermoid cysts (benign tumours the size of oranges) on my ovaries removed, I am MTHFR heterozygous, and have been told that I may have an "egg quality" issue. You name it, I've got it :(

Miracle DS born December 2008

December 2009: TTC#2

June 2010: Started at McGill. Transferred to Montreal Reproductive Center- had a horrible experience Switched to Montreal Fertility Center- So happy there!

IVF #1-
short protocolER: April 21/11- 8 eggs, 7 mature 5 embryosOn day 3: 4x4 cell grade 2 and 1x2 cell grade 15 day transfer of 1 blast on April 26/11 (two surprise blast frosties)
Beta on May 6/11. BFN :(

June 2011: On the waiting list for adoption from South Korea

July 2011:Persistent chronic endometritis (endometrial inflammation from a complication post c-section) finally cured!

FET #1:
September 8th 2011- transfer of 2 blasts
Beta on September 19/11 BFN :(

IVF #2-
short protocol againER: Oct. 5/11- 13 eggs collected, 11 mature and fertilized2DPER- : 11 embryos were grades 2&3 and 2,3,4 and 5 cells
Oct. 10/11 5 day transfer of 1 blast.
Two blast frosties
Beta on October 20/11 BFN :(

Consultation @OVO- October 2011.
Re-consulted @McGill. Staying with MFC for now.

Operative hysteroscopy with Dr. M on February 23, 2012 to hopefully remove and endocervical cyst or polyp. --- no cyst or polyp, but endocervical folds were found that are most probably damage from a cerclage from my previous pregnancy. The folds cannot be removed but should not effect implantation.

Phone consult booked with Dr. Librach, a reproductive immunologist, to explore possible immune issues. (Feb. 16, 2012) rescheduled for February 28th, 2012. Dr. Librach said that I most probably have immune issue based on my history and symptoms. With next transfer I will be:-Having an intralipid infusion,-using steroids-Using baby aspirin-Praying that it works! And traveling back and forth from Toronto for treatments along with cycling at MFC.

FET #2
Started Estrace April 9, 2012
Estimated transfer date: April 26, 2012
CYCLE CANCELLED- lining didn't look right even though it grew but only after 16 days

FET #3 (actually FET #2 Take 2)Started Estrace May 9th, 2012- lining not cooperating again :(Cycle cancelled again.

This was our last try before going down a new path...I'm done. My body and soul can't take this anymore.

May 2012: Looking into surrogacy.
June 2012: Now looking for a surrogate
Sept 2012: We may have found the most wonderful surrogate! Keep your fingers crossed after so much heartache (after contacting over 250 surrogates and getting close with about 4 before all contact stopped?)

May 2012: It looks like it is going to be at least 4 more years. Adoption from South Korea has slowed down.

September 2012: South Korea waiting list closed because there are no proposed children. Hopefully things will pick up.

On the waiting list for adoption from Kazakhstan ( looking at a probable 2 year wait.)

October 2012: Called to sign a contract with Alliance Des Familles du Quebec. In Shock! Might be adopting from Kazakstan earlier than anticipated!

November 2012: Waiting for my surrogate to have her sonohystogram.Signed contract with Alliance Des Familles du Quebec and opened file with SAI.

Starting home study in January 2013.So, right now, it seems like its always all or nothing! Pursuing surrogacy (in the screening stage/pre-contract) and international adoption from Kazakhstan. I'm praying that we will choose the right path. I'm so conflicted and don't know what to do.

Adoption process on pause.

Surrogacy journey: Amazing surrogate passed psych and cleared medically. We will be meeting with dr. M to make plan.

May 2013: Getting ready for FET in a May. I high quality blast to my surrogate. BFN

Took the summer 2013 off.

November 2013: Ovarian stimulation -7 follicles. Only 1 egg :( Possible ET to GS Friday November 29, 2013. NOPE. EGG was abnormal.

April 4, 2014: Last cycle with incredible surrogate ended with a BFN

April 28, 2014: Submitted file for home study. Collecting documents to complete my file.

August 2014: Still waiting for home study...

Starting home study soon! Stay tuned...

Hey Lisa,

WElcome and thanks for the update. I don't think you'll be disappointed... glad to hear when they think they'll be closed.. i'm hoping to start my cycle just beofre returning to work and august is my timeline, so that would be perfect.. hopefully we can time it as such!!

I don't know about doctors notes, I got them for all 3 IVF"s, but from my family doctor instead and it worked out well, but this time I won't be able...since I have no sick leave... I borrowed 25 days when I had to go off on mat leave early due to high blood pressure. I'm hoping to do ET just before I go back to work... as I don't want my boss to know why i'd be off work. He's new and I went to see him this week...he said if my intention was to return to work pregnant or shortly thereafter, he'd put me in a temporary job and not my own position... jerk... who knows if this IVF will work or if I will ever have another child.. I want my old job back and they can deal with the outcome if and when I become pregnant!! So I'm hoping the clinic closure doesn't affect my timeline for IVF with Dr. Mahutte.. (I'm paying, so quota wont' affect me).

The quebec govt has only allocated so many IVF treatments they will pay for each year... not sure how it is divided among the clinics, but essentially once the money's gone for 2011, it's gone and everyone will need to wait till Jan 1, 2012 to start over. Yes, they are closed for summer holidays, but I guess they'll wait till there's no more money for free IVF's before closing based on what was said earlier..now i"m paying, so it's not an issue for me... I don't know if you can opt to pay when living in Quebec if all the quotas are met?

I never really knew that!! That will suck big time if it doesnt work out for us and we have to wait until JANUARY :( i dont thinj we are alllowed to pay until we have done 3 funded ones, which is stupid based on that information. I guess that gives me even more reason to pray that the first one is succesfful! I guess this quota thirng is only for IVF though and not IUI's as well, even though IUI is funded too? Because we had an IUI last August, September and November. Or was that maybe because funding didnt start until around July I think it was? I wonder if we cant do anymore IVFs until Jan if we would be able to do IUI's in the meantime, because we cannot afford IVF even if we had the option to pay. Ah, its all so discouraging.

Oh, and sandy, i had wanted to tell you that on the McGill Fertiity site, they say that under law they are now only allowed to transfer 1 egg for both government funded AND private IVF, so it looks like this rule also does apply to out of province people. I know that Dr. mahutte will transfer more for yoh based on the judgment is can make to tramsfer 2 because of age, but i guess even if I were paying for it out of pocket they would only be allowed to transfer 1. Not too sure why anyone from out of province, or even those from Quebec who have had their 3 IVF's would pay to have it done in Quebec unless their doctor is willing to make an exception. Quebec centres must be loosing a lot of private clients if this is the case.

We have our consult April 21..and if that's the case, we may have to reconsider IVF in Quebec... I'm not paying all that money to have 1 embyro transferred... I had 3 last time which resulted in a singleton. I'll let you know what he says... I really hope not, cause I don't know where else to go.. I'm not going back to Ottawa... this really sucks!!

And yes, it sucks even more for those of you in Quebec who would have to wait and not even be allowed to pay...that makes no sense either.. grrr!

It will be interesting to see what he says. I know they are allowed to use their "descretion" and make the decision to transfer 2. I thnk that is ridiculous if you are paying yourself because most people would go elsewhere. Well if IUI and IVF are not going to be available after June we are going to see if we can pay for IUI cycles until January, because we cant afford IVF and at least IUI would still be trying, even though we have not been successful with that. The doctor said we could have tried more IUI cycles, but since we are driving from Gatineau, after 3 we decided we wanted to try IVF, but if IUI is our only opltion until January them i would rather pay for that and at least still be trying something. *sighs*

Well Sandibeach keep us posted on what the clinic says about embryo transfers. I would be reluctant to only transfer one (I read alot about single vs multiple embryo transfers during our last IVF). And like you, I would not go back to the OFC for IVF...I'm getting anxious and stressed about just going to meet with Dr.V about a reapeat SA for my husband.

Hope they allow for atlest two.

Have a good appointment!

Melissa, hopefully you'll have a BFP on your 1st cycle but if not, you may have frozen embryos to transfer before switching to IUI. I really hope so!

I can't believe the clinic will be closed for 6 months. That's just nuts. What's the point of gov't funding if they don't give enough for the clinics to be operational year round?!

I know Ovo was closed for 2 months last year and I believe it included IUI's. At the time, the Dr. said they were only doing IVF for cancer patients. Hopefully that was a personal choice and not because of gov't funding.

Sandi, I also wouldn't pay and only transfer 1. I don't understand why the cap would apply to someone paying out of pocket. I would call to find out and not waste more time. Is there only one clinic in Ottawa?

Hi Guys,
The clinic won't be closed for 6 months. The clinic closes every 6 months. From what I understood, the government has quotas for every 6 months- not for the year.

I'm going to be cycling soon, I'm probably going with the short protocol since I only had 6 follicles on each ovary and a short cycle. Does anyone have any experience with the short cycle.

I'm waiting for AF which is usually between CD 21-23, but this months I'm on BPC, so I think that I will make it to CD 28 (April 7th). Will any of you guys be cycling then?

Baby dust to all!

Lisa :)
