Unlike many of the gentlemen on this site, I've been blessed with one successful IVF experience which has given my wife and I a beautiful little girl.
We're currently in the early stages of our second successful IVF.
The difference is that my wife is VERY private and superstitious and I'm an open book.
I'll never claim to be the perfect husband or father but I try my best, always have good intentions and really try to do the right thing.
When we recently discovered our good fortune my wife was at work and my mom was out to help us with our little girl over the holidays.
I'm a talker. I have a big mouth.
My wife and I had agreed to let my mom in on our secret about the IVF.
I had also promised to not to tell anyone else.
I told my dad via skype.
Knowing how private my wife is, my mother had e-mailed him asking him to respect our privacy and not ask any questions.
My wife saw the e-mail.
She went nuts.
Now I'm no longer trustworthy and I'm a liar.
Divorce has been mentioned.
Let me remind you that we have a wonderful 2.5 year old little girl and are now expecting again.
I understand I should have used better discretion and had some self control over my mouth.
But divorce?
Her points are valid - just very extreme.
So my question - who do you talk to when you can't talk to anyone and you have a big mouth?
I'm VERY hopeful this current episode passes, I'm forgiven and have learned some self control.
This is my current venue to speak and appreciate suggestions.
And yes I know I can talk to my wife. Sometimes I need to talk over matters with someone else.
What to do?

I think that your wife will calm down. I can understand why should would be upset but I can also understand the temptation to talk about IVF with others, particularly when you have good news to share. I have sometimes had a big mouth too that has gotten me into trouble. When I told my sisters about going through IVF, my DH was livid with me. But I was finding it too stressful keeping it all inside.

I think that your wife will come around. In the meantime, all you can do is apologize for breaking this promise. Nobody is perfect. Good luck!
Me: 40
Dx: DH: Vasectomy; need IVF/ICSI ME: D.O.R. and many immunological issues. (Initially presented as "normal" but issues were only discovered after IVF attempt #2 and #3 after testing at new clinic)
IVF attempt #1 Nov.2009, Age 37: Long "Lupron" protocol
Dec.2009: Cycle cancelled due to oversuppression
IVF attempt #2, Age 38: April 2010: 3 eggs retrieved, 2 mature, 2 fertilized, ET of 2 embryos BFN
IVF atempt #3 at new clinic: November 2010, Age 38: 5 eggs retrieved, 4 mature, 4 fertilized, ET of 2 blastocysts BFP
Strong beta numbers but babies not measuring on track but one heartbeat is present. Followup u/s reveals no HB's :( Had D&C--so sad.
Moved to new clinic closer to home + more of a focus on testing for potential immunological factors:
Further testing reveals three mutations related to inherited thrombophilia (2 MTHFR mutations and PA1-1 mutation), positive ANA, elevated NK cells and cytokines and low levels of leukocyte antibodies (LADS), Recommended Immunological treatment: Humira, LIT, IVig and blood thinners if PG
IVF Protocol: Low stim for me/ TESE needed for DH; took Humira in late August and early September; taking DHEA plus Co-Enzyme Q10, vitamins for DH just for good measure! September--two trips to Mexico for LIT treatment, treatments 3 weeks apart
Initial re-testing through Alan Beer Centre after some of the immune treatments reveals only cytokines were lowered, NKs still high and LAD numbers still low. Another LIT in Mexico is recommended. We decide to begin cycle on doctor's recommendation of just doing IVIG.
IVF#4, Age 39 : November 2011: Worst AFC EVER--a whopping 4! Three follicles responded, two eggs were retrieved. Three day transfer of two Grade 1 8 cell embryos: "Fahita" & "Burrito" Stick, stick, stick little ones!
BFP! Beta of 569
Viability u/s at 6 w 2d shows TWO babies measuring on track with heartbeats of 121. Looks like babies might be sharing the same amniotic sac.
Second u/s at 7w 2 d shows ONE baby with hb of 150, measuring 7 w 3 days. No sign of twin. Vanishing twin syndrome?
Third u/s at 8 w 2d shows ONE baby with hb of 170, measuring 8 w 3 days. Looks like a little jellybean!
12 week u/s at 12 w 2 days and baby is measuring 12 w 5 days with a heart beat of 150. Baby mooned us and waved at us with one hand....looked like a "royal" wave to me!
13 week doctor's appointment, HB=155 on doppler
14 week u/s to check cervix, HB=148
16 week u/s to check cervix, HB=138, baby had hiccups!
20 week u/s--everything looks good! HB=130, looks like we're having a GIRL!
IPS results very good!
39 weeks: Our baby girl arrived!!! She is healthy and beautiful! We are so happy! :)

While I can understand why your wife is upset I have a similar problem. My DH asked me not to tell about our cycles but I just couldn't help it. I am very much a person who needs to get their thoughts out and I need a sounding board. I hope things work out and that your wife is less upset over time. Best of luck to you and congratulations on the pregnancy!

I'm very sorry you are going through this. I can only hope it's meds/pregnancy hormones kicking in, because to me, you should be able to tell your parents, and I don't think it's fair of her to deny you that.

Hugs to you.

Hello Daddyforthree,

Welcome to the community & congrats on your recent success.

It's hard to strike a balance, especially when you find yourselves on opposite ends of the privacy/sharing spectrum.

I've found this site to be a great source for support and information. Perhaps this could be an outlet; you'd be amazed at how cathartic it can be to do this. (You can blog, or start a thread -- like this one -- or even join a cycle buddies thread) This site offers a good measure of anonymity so maybe sharing your feelings and experiences here is something your wife will be ok with. A balance between her need for privacy and your need to share.

My husband was very private about our first attempts and I was more open. We've switched & he's now more open and I'm more reticent about discussing this with the people in my circle "in real life." However I turn to this site and I have received amazing support.

Good luck in striking the balance that suits both of your needs.

Run out and get a nice bouquet of flowers for her and tell her you were in the wrong to spill the beans and you are very sorry. Then let the dust settle a little. In time she will realize she over-reacted but this is not the time to get into right vs. wrong.

Unexplained IF/ DOR. Began TTC in 2008.

I think that telling your parents is very different then telling your buddies.
I think that sometimes because the treatments are being done to us (women) we forget that the man is also a a part of the process. This isn't just her process it's an equal process and you had just as much right to tell as she did to keep it a secret.
While I think that you shouldn't have broken your promise I don't think that it should have been a promise that you felt you needed to make in the first place.

Please see "about me" section for details

My husband and I are kinda the same except the roles are reversed. He is very private and doesn't discuss our situation. I on the other hand will tell anyone who asks. I find it very comforting and an outlet for me. In the beginning he would always ask me why I felt the need to tell people. But now he understands that we are just different in the way we cope. I do think you need to talk to your wife about the situation but I also feel like she needs to be more understanding. I think the divorce comment is a little harsh. Next time don't promise something that you can't do. I think thats what she is probably more upset about. Good luck and congrats on your new baby.

I'm also very private, but I myself feel the needs to talk to people sometimes, so I love that I can come here and anonymously share my news, good or bad, way before I'm ready to share with the anyone in my real world.

I hope you're able to smooth things out quickly and enjoy this exciting happy time together.

Hi TandS,

Some of these things stand for the testing or medication that comes up (or is used) during the course of a cycle.

I did not use a hormone patch (I think that's what it is), but there are sometimes different ways to administer the hormones: injection, nasal spray, patch (like a nicotine patch, I'm guessing), pills, suppositories, etc.

Beta is the pregnancy test that comes at the end of the two week waiting (2ww) period. The test measures the amount of pregnancy hormone in the patient's blood. The hormone is bHCG (beta HCG. Or just Beta for short).

Here's a link to the acronym guide on this site: http://www.ivf.ca/acronym.htm It definitely helped me a tonne in the early days here.

Cheers and all the best,

Zan

:)

Daddy: I think your wife also was on the boards seeking advice on this issue... or it was another couple with a very similar story.
In my opinion, the issues that you are raising arent about if you should be allowed to tell your parents but rather, that you promised you wouldnt than you did. They are trust issues. You violated her trust in you when you violated that agreement. Telling people unvalidated her importance and her wishes.
If, when in the process of making the agreement you asked for a compromise and together you agreed on whom to tell, that would be different, but from my memory - it was a no telling anyone thing.

So... whether or not it is 'fair' for you to want to tell is not the issue. The issue is you violated a foundational part of your marriage. You made a promise to your wife after discussing with her how important the issues where and a commitment to follow through - and then did the opposite. The issue has very little to do with IVF at all actually, or hormone drugs, or he said she said or any of that. You made a BIG booboo here. You have set yourself up to also be excluded from her journey with IF now because she will have difficulty sharing with you, knowing that you are an open book with others. There is some major healing to be done. Like counsellor mediated stuff. Bringing up divorse is understandable. You broke a vow. Trust is a huge HUGE part of a relationship. Add to that respect, and understanding and all those other things which went out the window in those moments and you have a wife who no longer feels like #1... and perhaps that number is more like #4-5 now. This will be an uphill battle for you. There will be some major traumas to her ego from this.

I can say these things - because I lived these moments myself. I have walked in her shoes. It's awfully lonely to be dealing with IF and all the private issues that come with it, when you feel like you cant share with your own DH because you know your story will be 6pm news in the next phone call that comes in, or the next time he visits family. She wants the journey to be between you and her. A private couple thing. Respect that. If you honestly cant handle keeping a secret alone with your wife - than get on some boards with other dads (like this one) or find a support group or something that does not include ppl from real life. This is not a forever thing.... some day you will get to share all the joys with everyone.... DW just wanted a few months of privacy.

But fact is, you cant take back the ppl you have told... and all the ppl they have told. DW will be re-traumatized about this every time she sees them, or talks to them until she is ready for this to be open news. You need to understand that. It will be a constant reminder to her about how you made her needs less than #1.

Anyways. From experience time and effort will heal these wounds. But EFFORT is the main part. You have work to do to rebuild some foundational things in your marriage. Get a counsellor and go together and seperate for a while. Listen to your wife, and ask questions when you dont comprehend. There should never be an excuse for this to happen again.

I wish you luck and both of you happiness.
