Hey I have maybe some great news!!!!

We checked our sunlife account online today, cause I had a feeling.. and we had claimed 6100 for the IVF procedure the first day we went in, which was after Quebec got coverage. We hadnt heard anything, but Now on our pending list there are 2 new claims, that we didnt claim! ...one for 1600 and the other for 1700..I think they are dividing up what they are going to cover!!! This made my day, im not getting to excited but this looks promising!!! i will be happy when I see the money in the bank!!

Just wanted to share!!! Anyone hear anything else????

I've been lurking these boards for awhile and just thought I'd share the response I got from sunlife when I put in my claim for IVF (I live in Ontario) through the PSHCP. I'm thankful for this board since we would have never thought to even try to submit had I not seen this thread.

The part for ICSI was denied right away (which I expected) but for the IVF portion of the claim we got this response:

"The eligibility of this product or service is currently under review. Once a decision is made, we will let you know whether this expense is eligible under your benefits plan."

All we did was submit our receipt and a copy of the section of the plan that says where it might be eligible. No letter or appeal needed so far.

That's great news...that's what we want, to review it..please let us know when you get an answer. But I dont' understand why ISCI is no? Does Quebec not cover ISCI? Thanks ladies for doing all the leg work! HOpefully it's for a good cause!! We are planning IVF #4 next summer - it would be great if it was covered since I'll still be off on leave without pay taking care of DS.

Thanks for the replies ladies.
Fromwell, please keep us posted. I really hope they cover it.

Sandibeach: I was under the impression that in QC only the IVF is covered not ICSI so I guess PSHCP would cover the same (very hopeful for that, as it would be nice to get any part of a cycle covered). Fingers crossed. :)

Do you mind sharing the section of the plan that says that?
Thanks.

No letter or appeal needed so far.

im guessing you must have sent in a detailed receipt? We are ging to call OFC and see if we can get a detailed break down of the IVF cycle.. Maybe that will help. Thanks again!!!

The receipt we sent in was the one we got in the mail from the OFC after our cycle was
completed, it had 2 lines, one for IVF cost and one for ICSI cost.

We just sent in the paragraph below from the Medical Practitioner section of the plan which was mentionned earlier in this thread. DH didn't mean to include it with our claim, he just forgot to take it out of the pile of papers. Maybe it was a good thing ?

"Eligible expenses are the reasonable and customary charges for:

1.physician's services and laboratory services where such services are not eligible for reimbursement under the participant's provincial/territorial health insurance plan, but where such services would be eligible for reimbursement under one or more other provincial/territorial health insurance plans.
Laboratory services include those services which when ordered by and performed under the direction of a physician provide information used in the diagnosis or treatment of disease or injury. Services include, but are not limited to, blood or other body fluid analysis, clinical pathology, radiological procedures, ultrasounds, etc.

Where only one province/territory provides reimbursement for a particular service, and that province/territory discontinues the coverage, the issue shall be subject to review by the Trustees as to whether coverage will also be discontinued under the Plan. Claims for such services, following cessation of provincial/territorial coverage, shall be held by the Administrator pending the decision of the Trustees.

Where a province/territory begins reimbursement for a particular service, claims for the service shall be held by the Administrator pending a review by the Trustees as to whether the service should be covered in the other provinces and territories."

It still doesn't mean we'll be covered but a least it's not an outright no!

Thanks... I didn't realize QC didn't cover ISCI... kinda dumb, when I think that the majority of us have ICSI with our IVF cycles. But like you said, it's $1500 and the IVF is $6100... if they could reimburese us the $6100 that would be FANTASTIC... it's great that they already cover all the meds... no limit... we are already very lucky compared to other's plans outside the feds!!

I got a letter yesterday from the PSHCP Administration Authority. It says they're still only covering for completely blocked tubes, but "The current adjudication of IVF treatments is currently under investigation. Members will be notified if a major change is made to the plan."

No indication of when that change might happen...

My husband found the fed health care plan directive:

Here's the link to it: http://www.njc-cnm.g...ge=3&vid=9&pv=1

What I interpret from this, is since IVF coverage in Quebec is new, the last paragraph would apply and it will ultimately be up to the Trustee's to make a decision on this. So here's to hoping that the claims that you ladies have submitted will start the ball rolling and the trustees looking at eligibility and that it will be accepted!! I certainly hope so!!!! Please keep us informed on how it goes!!!

"Eligible expenses are the reasonable and customary charges for:

physician's services and laboratory services where such services are not eligible for reimbursement under the participant's provincial/territorial health insurance plan, but where such services would be eligible for reimbursement under one or more other provincial/territorial health insurance plans.

WOW. I just stumbled across this thread, and my head is exploding. A little bit! I've re-read it twice, and checked out the Sunlife site. Am I understanding correctly (as far as you ladies can make out) that because we live in BC, and my DH is a federal employee with Sunlife, that they will consider covering the lab fee portion of our IVF because Quebec now covers for federal employees who live there? And PS I also wished for blocked tubes long ago...

Please, anyone with info or updates on this? Am I on the right track? And does anyone know whether Sunlife wants preapproval first?

Weepity... you sorta have it right. If you had blocked tubes right now, Sunlife would pay your IVF because it's covered by OHIP in Ontario. Now that Quebec covers it for all women up to 3 attempts, the same rules should apply. It's very clear in the regulations, that the board of trustees has to make a decision as to whether or not to cover it. As you can see in the above replies, it seems they are stalling and not wanting to make a decision. They will need to make a decision soon, they can't stall it forever... as far as I know you don't need preapproval with Sunlife. This is new and the board of trustees need to make a decision. If you find out anything, please let me know!

I just want to thank all of you ladies for these postings and for your fights with Sunlife (as they benefit us all!). After reading this thread, it prompted me to call Sunlife re: the whole coverage of IVF (which we will be attempting in the new year). The Sunlife rep told me flat out IVF wasn`t covered but that the medications might be. I questioned their policies given it is now covered in Quebec. She told me that because there is coverage under my provinical plan (Ontario) and I don`t meet that criteria that they wouldn`t cover it. She didn`t even mention it being under review :( As for the lab fees, I was told to submit them and they would cover what they cover... sorry for the negative news. I am going to contact my compensation advisor next week and see if they know anything about our benefits being under review and how long that process takes. I will let you know what I find out. Thanks again!

You'll need to write them a letter... speaking to someone on the phone isn't enough.. they just tell you what they have been told, it needs to go higher up. I don't think this will be given to us, I think we'll need to fight the board of trustees... it's not Sunlife, it's the fed govt... Sunlife just administers it for us. I think it will need to be appealed and argued in order to get them to look at Quebec's policy and decide if they will cover it in other provinces.

Thanks for the response, and all the awesome information. I will definitely join this fight. Does anyone have the correct address (or a link to the address) to the Sunlife department where we should be sending this correspondence?

Thanks again.

Iíve just lucked into finding this site & I thank you for your wealth of information. I started seeing a DR @ the Ottawa Fertility Center & had a discussion with my DR just yesterday about IVF. He actually suggested I contact Sunlife to see if I could get coverage for the treatment on top of the drugs. Both my hubby & I are employed with the Federal Government, so have 100% of the drugs covered already. Do you know if anyone in the Province of ON has ever been reimbursed these treatments?
Iím willing to fight Sunlife as well, I was wondering if I could also have a copy of the letter you send them?
