I went to see a naturopath today. It was definitely interesting.

First, the ND did a short consult - asked me what I needed from him, explained a bit about what could be causing the infertility.
Next, he did VEGA testing on me for phenolics (they play a major role in allergies, hypersensitivity, and intolerances).
I reacted to Group Ethanol (sensitivity to perfumes, gas, cleaners, disinfectants)
aldosterone
candida
cortisol (symptoms include fatigue and stress)
epinephrine (another stress one, symptoms include anxiety, tachycardia, insomnia)and norepinephrine
estrogen and progesterone (we all know what these are for!) - he said basically my body attacks itself if there is an imbalance here, hence the Chemical with my fresh cycle
salsolinol (symptoms include headaches, weakness, chronic fatigue)
testosterone
....and like I thought, thyroxin (amino acid of the thyroid gland).

After we discussed my results for these, I had Mora therapy done. Basically it is done to desensitize my body to these phenolics. I go back in 1-2 weeks for another session. I will also be on some meds to get rid of a yeast infection (DH is on them too). The ND is also having me take my temperature three times daily to test my thyroid. He also suggested taking an omega 3-6-9 for general prenatal health.

I know this is a lot of information, but I am looking to start a general discussion about naturopaths and your treatment. If you have been through some of this or being treated - join in!

What an interesting into what might be causing your issues, Amanda. I'm sure the naturopath will have you all ship shape for your cycle in a couple of months.
Me 42, DH 51
TTC since Jan '08
Male factor (ASA), high FSH, etc, etc
IVF#1, March/April '09 - BFN
IVF#2, Aug '09 (after two cancellations for high FSH) - BFN, but 1 frostie in the bank.
IVF#3, Dec '09 (after more cancellations for high E2 & high FSH) - cancelled CD7 for poor response
IVF#4, Feb/March - BFN, but 4 embies frozen
FET #1 May/June (after two false starts with unmedicated/low med protocols) - only one embie out of five survived the thaw - BFN.
IVF#5, Aug '10 - cancelled after 10 days for poor response
IVF#6, Oct '10 (but really only #4 counting by ERs, after another non-starter high FSH month) - BFN, 1 embie frozen
Jan '11 - surprise offer of an egg donor, more than 12 months ahead of predicted waiting time; accepted, but deferred to pay off debts and do FET
Feb '11 - devastating earthquake in my old home town; Mum comes to live with us (not quite the addition to the family I had been hoping for); anyone want to buy a slightly broken house?
FET#2, June '11 - embie didn't survive the thaw. The last we'll be seeing of my crappy old eggs.
Final IVF (with DE), Oct '11 - 1 blast transferred the day after NZ won the Rugby World Cup (yay!), 3 on ice
Beta - 3 Nov

Is it any wonder I'm cranky?

I'll be lurking with interest because I think I'm going to set up an appt with a naturopath this month. I just have to sneak it by DH, he thinks it a waste of money.

Good luck, I can't wait to read more!

My friend ButterflyKiss provided this quote from Laura Bush's book and I think it captures how many of us feel:"The English language lacks the words to mourn an absence... for someone who was never there at all, we are wordless to capture that particular emptiness. For those who deeply want children and are denied them, those missing babies hover like silent, ephemeral shadows over their lives. Who can describe the feel of a tiny hand that is never held?"

I felt like it would be a good idea to share this all since I was leary about seeing a naturopath as well. It will hopefully help others make an informed decision about whether they would like to see an ND or not.

Now if only I could easily remember to do everything I need to do during the day!

3 pills per day for the yeast stuff, as well as 1/4 tsp of probiotics twice a day to build up the good bacteria again.
5 drops under my tongue twice a day for desensitizing those hormones.
Huge horse pills (omega 3-6-9), 2 of them, twice a day.
And finally...my prenatal!

Oh and don't forget taking my temp 3 times a day - when I wake up, at noon and 4pm! :th_aggahhh:

I just came from my first appt with a naturopath / TCM practitioner. I really liked her a lot. They specialize in IF and she claims they have a 80% success rate. She wants me to come back this week for a blood test and an organ function test. Then I go back next Sat to discuss a treatment plan. I'm feeling positive about taking this step.

Interesting thread!
Me: 35 DH:35
Dx: Unexplained
Started ttc September 2006
November 2007 - Initial consult at LifeQuest
January 2008 - Diagnostic testing.
February 2008 - Test results - No problems with DH. Dr. suspected I had a PCOS variant and that I probably wasn't ovulating. Suggested superovulation (injectibles) with or without IUI
Decided to forgo treatment for the time being and focus on improving my health.
March 2008 - October 2009 - LOTS of alternative therapy. You name it, I tried it!
February 2009 - confirmed via cycle monitoring I was now ovulating and my ovaries both look fine. Officially unexplained IF. Hmmm, now what?
Next Steps: Had initial consult with Dr. Virro at Markham Fertility Centre on October 1, 2009. Hysteroscopy/laproscopy performed on February 5, 2010. Post op appointment on March 8, 2010. Found out one small spot of endo removed from uterus and a very tiny septum resected.
Started BCP on March 31, 2010.
First IVF (first anything!) cycle after.
Last BCP April 20th.
Started stims: April 25 (Puregon - varied from 100iu to 42.5iu, Menopur - 75iu, and orgalutron)
ER date - May 5th.
14 retrieved, 11 mature, 7 fertilized - 4 via IVF, 3 via ICSI
3 days past retrieval - 5 8-cell embryos (3 via IVF, 2 via ICSI), 2 lagging 6-cell embryos (1 via IVF, 1 via ICSI)
ET on May 10, 5day past retrieval - tranferred 1 "superb, could sell it on e-bay" embaby - grade 5AB0! 4 more "lovely" totsicles (2 5day, 2 6day). The ivf embies did better than the icsi embies.
Beta - May 21s: BFP! Beta was 507! Still early days, but we're happy to be pg!
Viability scan - June 11. Baby right on track, heartrate of 140bpm, measuring 7weeks 1day at just over 1cm long. HOWEVER, big cyst in my right ovary. Going back for another u/s in two weeks to monitor the cyst.
U/S to monitor cyst - June 24 - cyst shrank slightly. Baby still measuring on track, 9weeks 1day and just over 2cm long, heartrate of 167bpm
12week u/s - July 12 - cyst had shrank to 2cm. Baby looked like a baby! Moving around and flailing arms and legs. Just over 5.5cm long, heartrate of 160bpm. Nuchal scan and nasal bone both looked good. Doctor's appointment went well.
20 week ultrasound and doctors appointment - baby looks good - its a girl :) Test results from IPS test show a 1 in 20,000 risk of a chromosomal abnormality. Placenta is partially covering cervix, doctor will check again at 32 weeks.
26 week doctors appointment - GD test
30 week doctors appointment - got GD test results, I passed. Baby measuring on track, good strong heartbeat :)
32 week doctors appointment - u/s to check placenta position to see if it has been pulled up from my cervix and also to check baby's size

They test the blood to see if it is functioning properly - if it's taking oxygen and nutrients to all the parts of my body. They test it to see if the cells are clumping, etc. And the organ function tests the 3 organs essential to reproductive health, the liver, kidneys and spleen. She didn't really explain what they are testing for or how but I'll find out on Thursday and let you know :)

I'm just back from my live blood test and it was so interesting! He jabed my finger and got a tiny drop of blood to put under the microscope and I watched on the monitor. He showed me the giant poster on the wall showing what normal blood cells look and act like and all the potential abnormalities and what they look like, there were about 30 of them.

He brought mine up and you could see some clumping together of cells, some cells had black centres instead of white, there werre black spots inthe background which indicate bacteria, there were some white spots in the background that indicate yeast, there was some crystallization, really really interesting to look at. He recorded it all on a DVD that we will be able to use later to compare to see how improved my cells are after treatment. Overall, it indicated lack of oxygen, toxins, poor circulation, poor digestion and I forget what else. It's all out in my car because I'm back at work.

For now, he recommended oxygen drops. Yep drops. I said, isn't oxygen a gas?? But this is a liquid form that you add to a glass of water 3 times a day. He also suggested 2 herbs that were optional so I opted out for now. I'm going to be spending plenty on the necessary supplements that I don't need to be buying "optional" stuff. The two were M7 and ginseng.

I bought the oxygen though and I'm trying to not be cynical about it all. I spent $17 on a little bottle of oxygen drops. We'll see...

Tomorrow I go for my organ function test which involves sending electrical currents through my organs and seeing how they react I guess.

Sounds very interesting MG! It is amazing how all NDs have such a different approach to treating patients. What are the oxygen drops supposed to do? Get rid of the bacteria??

Avanderhiede - the oxygen drops are to increase the oxygen in my system, specifically in my blood to make it function better.

I had my organ function test yesterday. Basically, I had to hold onto a metal cylinder that is connected to this little machine and he had a probe type thing that was also attached to the machine. He placed the probe on differnt points in my ear and it sent a signal to the machine to see how energy flowed from that point to the associated body part. He tested a few points in my ear and then a few points on my back.

The results showed that I have tension in my shoulders (always!) and there are issues with my kidney and spleen function (both organs are vital to reproductive health) and that I have a cold uterus which means there isn't enough blood flow to my uterus which I already suspected. He said the test also indicated slow digestion which creates problems in other areas.

He said there was a sensitive spot on my back that is connected with sweaty palms and my hands are either freezing or sweaty all the time. I know I have blood flow issues because of my cold hands and feet. He said that's also connected to my spleen.

So then he started talking about the treatment. I mentioned that I had an appointment to see the other doctor (they work as a team) on Saturday to talk about the treatment schedule and he said I didn't need to talk anymore, it's time to start the treatment! :D So the treatment procedure is 21 sessions of acupunture over the next 3 months, starting with 3 sessions a week. He said I will also be given some herbs to take in addition to the acupuncture.

Other things he mentioned are:

- drink only warm water, especially around my period.
- breathe properly - big deep breaths through my nose into my belly, belly should go out. Exhale through the mouth and the belly should go in.
- exercise, yoga is good.
- reduce salt intake

That's all I can remember but I have another session with them tomorrow and I'll update again after that.

I'm very excited about this and feel very positive about it all. I'm so glad I decided to do this. Thank goodness for insurance though...the acupunture alone would have been $1,600 plus the herbs and tests and consultations! With insurance though, I should only be paying about $500 out of pocket.

avanderhiede very interesting thread! Thanks!

MG I am getting goosebumps reading what you are going through and oh my, I sure would not be surprised to learn about your blessed BFP in a few months if not sooner :) What your ND recommened about warm water is the same thing that I have been recommended by my herbalist. I also suffer with cold hands and feet, for the past few weeks since finsihing my total body detox, herbal teas have become my friends. The only time I drink cool water is at work since I have yet to buy a thermos.

I shall be reading with interest on your progress sweet friend :flowers:

Blessings.

I had my second acupuncture treatment last night and before they did that, I had cupping therapy. Anyone ever done this??? I've never heard of it.

Basically, they take different size cups (they look like little tiny fishbowls, the rim is about 2 inches in diameter) and suction them to my back. They do this by holding a flame inside the cup to clear the oxygen out and then set it on my back. She had about half a dozen of them and she just kept setting them and then moving them to the next spot all over my back. It didn't hurt in the least, just an odd sensation I guess (picture suctioning a glass to your face when you were a kid and your mother yelling at you that your face is going to stay like that).

The purpose of this is two-fold. As a diagnostic tool, the degree of redness in the marks left behind indicates the level of toxins in your blood. She said smokers always have the darkest marks. As a treatment, it promotes blood circulation and something else to do with the internal organs (different areas of your back are tied to different organs). She was doing it for me as a treatment.

When I was getting in the shower this morning though, I caught a glimpse of my back in the mirror and I have these perfectly round 2" diameter red spots that look like hickies on my back!! I only have two perfectly round ones, some half moon type ones and some other smaller marks here and there. What I find really interesting though is that my neck and shoulder are in spasm / inflamed (happens a few times a year and I have to go to the chiropractor and / or massage therapist) and the darkest marks are in that area. Whenever I go to the chiro or massage, they tell me to drink lots of water after my treatment because they've just released toxins into my system that I need to cleanse. So there seems to be a connection.

DH is a total skeptic and he will have a bird if he sees these marks! If he does see them, I'm just going to tell him they are from the leeches
