Hi, I was just wondering if it might be possible to start a new forum for single mothers trying to have children and possibly struggling with infertility. I know there are several single moms on this site, or women who are single and are trying to have babies. It would be great if there was a forum where we all could chat (similar to the same sex couples forum).

Thanks for considering my request:)

Good question - Rick, is this possible?
Our Journey to Parenthood
TTC Since September 2007 - Diagnosis "Unexplained Infertility"
Me 28 - DH 30

Sept 2007-2008 - Trying au natural - When it was fun ;)
Sept 2008 Refered to 1st clinic, what a waste of time
Dec 2008 - Told by old clinic both my tubes were blocked, going for a lap...
Feb 2009 - Lap. done, both tubes clear and open, were never blocked
March 2009 - Clinic gave us the wrong patients results - switched clinics
April 2009 - Started at ISIS
May 2009 - 1st B2B IUI - DH counts amazing, 72 and 42 million 90% mobility - BFN!!! devastated beyond words
June 2009 - IUI #2 - 3 Good follicles - June 16th (113 million sperm, 99% motility WOOHOO) and 17th!! Beta Day July 1st - 14DPIUI...AF arrived...wondering how much more we can take :(
July 2009 - IUI #3 - Changed to timed BD...CD10 (July 10th) Only one good follicle, 2.2 I think, chose timed BD instead of IUI#3, due to only one follicle - we are going to try "au natural " this cycle - BFN again...
August 2009 - Taking time off and enjoying each other, 1st adoption meeting Sept 16th, and I also have a free round of Gonal-F waiting for us at the clinic when we decide to go back - Became a Moderator here at IVF.CA!! Thrilled to be about to give back to a wonderful site and great group
September 2009 - Explored the adoption process with Halton CAS Sept. 16 then decided to take time off from TTC and save for more fertility treatments in the future...
October 2009 - Decided to submit our application for adoption (Oct 27th) and started acupuncture, will not give up we will have a family one day
November 2009 - Finally met Karolyn, she stayed with DH and I for 3 days, she is like a sister to me, and had a few wonderful meet up's with other amazing women from the site...words can not describe what an amazing weekend that was
December 2009 - Re-doing a bunch of tests - hopefully a few IUI's in the new year with a different protocol - Maybe PRIDE training in March
January 2010 - Results from SONO and HSG, all looks great, Right tube questionable, not a huge concern as per Dr. Saving for IVF as that is our next option...might be a few years, hopefully not. Hopefully our miracle will come before -Wondering why is this so hard??
Jan 2010 Cont'd - Accepted to PRIDE training starting in March, SAFE home study to follow...We can finally dream again...
March 2010 - Started PRIDE March 22nd - 9 classes, 3 hrs every Monday night - Enjoying the class, looking forward to the future, getting all our documents ready for our SAFE homestudy package
May 1st 2010 - BFP on a HPT!!! Holy crap how did that happen...May 2nd Beta 182...May 4th Beta 300...1st U/S May 14th - 1st U/S shows healthy miracle bean - H/B and all - 127 beats per minute, what a wonderful moment between DH and I

Forget about all the reasons why something may not work. You only need to find one good reason why it will...

Hi Rick,

Just wanted to let you know that jsmile is also interested. She PMed me but wasn't sure how to contact you. I guess that only makes three of us, so maybe there just isn't enough interest. Perhaps we can wait a bit and see if anyone else responds.

Thanks,
K

k i think for now we can start up a thread in one of the forums and see if how many are interested ,some times members do not check all the forums and it can easily be missed
we can have one in "socializing" or "trying to concieve" forum
what do you think

Me too! I am trying to be a single mom by choice as well, and think there are something that I would love to chat with others about, that may not be understood eleswhere. Like, how hard it is to get a BFN and feel no one cares as much as you do, how before every attempt I can feel a moment of panic and question if I am making the right decision...
Thanks for condisdering a forum.

Hello T,

Nice to know there are some other 'single moms by choice' out there. I feel exactly the same way you do...some days I panic and think, "No, I don't want to do this - this is not the way it's supposed to happen", and "It would be so unfair to the child not to have a father"...and then other days I think, "I don't want to miss out on the most important and innate experience in life, just because I am single"... I don't want to miss out on having a family...even if it is a one-parent family.

I'm trying to get used to the panicked feeling I get between IUI procedures (while I am waiting or just taking a break) and remind myself that nobody is ever truly ready and you just have to go for it! Yes, it's scary to have a child on one's own...but it will be worth it...I am sure of this.

We are lucky in this day and age that we have options...50 years ago, we would not have had the option to become single mothers by choice.

Nice to see this thread started.
I'm 41 and I've had 7 IUIs with one pregnancy (3rd try) that didn't make it past 7 weeks.
just moved onto medicated IUIs and I'm waiting for results on the first. I was too scared of twins to the medicated cycles sooner, but wish I had.
My 42 year old friend got pregant and is through her 1st trimester the same way (on her 3rd medicated IUI) which is nice.
I'm struggling with next options. IVF? Donor Egg? Everything seems overwhelming.
I do have moments of fear thinking, what if I get what I ask for ? Will I manage it?
I found a SMC support group in my city and posted about some of my worries. I was really overwhelmed by the responses. They were so reassuring and positive.
Anyways, best of luck to all trying this.

MG

Hello!
You took the words right out of my head! Well thanks for helping me feel normal! You are right, it will all be worth it.
Thank god all those lovely women who came before us made it possible for us to follow our dreams!

Good luck following yours!

HI Everyone,

I am so glad that there are other single women on here who have or are in the process of trying to have children. I wasn't sure I'd get any response but now there are several of us. This is a great site. The owners are so receptive to adding topics when there is interest.

I welcome all of you to the single mom area!!!

And to add to everyone who has commented on the fear of all of this, I can sure relate. I am trying for child #2 and I go from really wanting a seond to totally freaking out and thinking I'm crazy. That's a little hard to explain on the other threads because most of the people are in a committed relationship and they desperately want chidren and don't get me when I'm waffling back and forth. I really really do want a second, I just worry about how I will cope with two.

You can see my journey so far in my signature below. I'd be happy to chat with anyone about my experiences. I'm sorry I was away from the board when many of you responded as my computer was broken for three weeks. But now I'm back! My decision now is whether or not I can afford another IVF cycle this summer.

Kristina

Kristina, I am so sorry about your recent BFN. That sucks. I have always had such a hard time with my BFN's. I wonder if it is different when you are on your own and no one feels that loss as much as you do. Anyway, I have been there many times and know how crappy it is. I am sorry.
Take care of yourself.

I can't tell you how happy I was to find this forum. I am a 42 single woman who just underwent IVF. I am stunned how little support exists for single women who decide to do this on their own. It was almost comical. My friend came to the clinic with me and the staff was almost relieved because they just assumed we were a couple. The doctor even wished all the happiness in raising our child together. Little did he know ...I am doing this by myself.

I underwent implantation 13 days ago and I go in for my blood test tomorrow. To say that I am losing my mind is an understatement. I now know why women can have hysterical pregancnies. I want this so much -- it hurts. This is a two year journey for me. I start with three unsuccessful IUIs and finally decided to proceed with IVF because of my age. I just didn't want to mess around any more.

No matter what happens tomorrow, I know I made the right decision to do this on my own. I didn't want to turn 50 and look back and wish I had tried for children. I always wanted to be a mother. Unfortunately my career and parental health issues just delayed the timeline.

I look forward to checking in and supporting other single mothers in their journey!!!

Thanks for joining in. I'm just about to start my first IVF and I'm somewhat terrified...I'm doing it in a city other than the one I live in and I'm finding it tough figuring out how all the details will work. I'll cross my fingers you get the results you are hoping for. I'm almost 42 and wonder how this will go...

Please keep us posted!!

I had mine done in another city as well. It was tough being away from home to do it. I was lucky to have a friend living in the city. The only advice I can offer, is find distractions. There are many ups and downs along the way and you need to keep your mind off the process 24/7. Read, go for walks, movies, etc. As for the best info on the process ask the clinic nurses. I found them the best source of information and they have way more patience that the docs. Best of luck.

Hello Everyone,

It is so wonderful that there are others out there like me!!! I'm sorry I haven't posted lately.....life is so busy. I hope you are all well.

I am going in tomorrow to pick up my suprefact for my IVf cycle so I think I am really doing this. The only little glitch is the timing. My son is having surgery in early July and then in August we are going to be away. I spoke to the doctor today about trying to time my retrieval so that is happens before my son's surgery but he suggested that it would be easier to time it after. But he doesn't get it. I don't have someone that I can leave my son with while he is recovering from his surgery and having my retrieval after will mean several early morning monitoring visits as well and I cannot take my son to daycare while he is recovering and it's hard to find someone to come at 6am. Ahhhhh!!!!! The complications of single motherhood. And I can't tell my family and ask for their help, because they don't know I'm doing this. But how do I explain all that to my doctor so that he'll understand without sounding too demanding and selfish in the process? I'm so glad that this forum exists now so that I can vent to others that will understand me.

I think a few of you have just had betas or they are coming up soon. I really, really hope they are BFP!!!! I know how hard repeated failures can be. GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

Kristina
