I am with the coffee drinking girls.... I have one a day.... My ob says up to 3 a day is fine... I found going off was giving me headaches and getting me "backed up". I love my morning coffee and it is one thing I did give up but was happy to start again.

Also I did caffeine free/ no booze with my unsuccessful cycle. This cycle (success) I did have my coffee and 2 glasses of wine a week..... Perhaps it cuts the stress a bit? Just a personal decision....

Good luck.

If you're trying to find a drink that is 'a little bitter' and hot (like coffee), then you could try a roasted barley type product called Caf-Lib (I think they sell it at Loblaws, Metro, and The Kitchen Table). You prepare it like instant coffee. There is another roasted barley type product called Teecino but I haven't been able to find it in Canada (although the company in the U.S. did send me a free sample in the mail...it took months to get here!). You would brew Teecino in your coffee maker. Personally, I tried both several months ago (while trying to kick the coffee habit). I preferred Caf-Lib (didn't like Teecino)...that said, I don't drink the roasted barley stuff anymore. I thought it was decent for a couple of months, but then I cheated and had real coffee again and decided there's no substitute for the real stuff. Since I'm an all or nothing kind of person, I've just given up coffee altogether...don't want to take any fertility risks, even if they are small. (But I still have cravings!!!)

I have recently discovered a 'satisfying' warm drink...hot apple cider. Since apples are in season right now, you could go to one of the apple farms in Caledon (e.g. Albion Orchards - www.albionorchards.com - they were very friendly!), or other areas on the outskirts of Toronto, and buy a 4 L jug of freshly squeezed apple cider (juice...there is no alcohol in there) for $5. I pop a cup in the microwave for 1 minute and it tastes great!

Hi Marigold,
Good to know!!! I have cut my coffee intake to just one cup a day! I tried quitting and I got very depressed so I know trying to quit completely is out of the question!!!
But Maybe I can switch to this caf-lib??? Might have to try it!

Thanks again!!

Warm apple cider - yum!!! But it definitely has to be the real stuff, not crystals that you add hot water too.

P.S. You should probably check with your doctor to make sure that roasted barley type drinks like Caf-Lib are okay to drink during pregnancy... And then let us know what he/she says!

Hello All -

Just butting in with my 2 cents: I was/am an avid coffee fan. At the beginning of my journey I started drinking decaf due to the caffine factor. Then my accupuncturist said even that was not so good, and recommended Krakus - an instant coffee substitute out of Poland. It is available at the grocery store, and it is the best substitute I've found. It is really good with a bit of soy milk added in, but regular milk is okay too. Between cycles I sometimes cheat with a "real" swiss water processed decaf...and find it so yummy...trying to cut that out now as we cycle up again, but I found that adding just one gulp of swiss water decaf to my krakus (aka Krack) with milk makes it taste like.......tada!!!.....coffee! And a gulp a day of decaf can't be that bad, right?! Anyway, for all of you trying to find substitutes, I say, give Krakus a try.

I just discovered raspberry leaf tea (uterine tonic), which apparently helps egg quality and uterus to be friendly to baby. Also love nettle tea for thyroid.
Age: 42
DH age: 49, good quality and count
Dx: unexplained; hypothyroid; factor v leiden
First pregnancy: age 39 (pregnant first try w/o IVF)
Age 39- Beautiful baby born!! - July 2008
Postpartum hemmorage, and retained products Sept 2008 (10 wks post partum), pulled out, no D&C
TSH became low – January 2009
Saw good progress with thyroid on natural products (but couldn’t take during a pregnancy), so now on small doses of thyroid medication (Synthroid & Cytomel)
TTC #2 - since April 2009
Several IUI attempts (w/o meds) – no success
Several small Thryoid nodules detected by U/S – February, 2010
Suspected endometriosis, laparascopy recommended – March, 2010
Natural pregnancy - April 2010
Miscarried (blighted ovum/ anembryonic) - June 2010

D&C post miscarriage (Tan hemmoragic tissue & necrotic decidua) – June 2010
Immediately after D&C, calcification on foot disappeared (?!)
Thyroid U/S – additional thyroid nodules, all under 4 mm – July, 2010
Laparascopy, hysteroscopy, D&C- no endo found, no abnormalities; tubes clear – Sept 2010
Unsuccessful attempted biopsy of thyroid nodules – Sept 2010
Follicle count (18 found on day 2) – Oct, 2010
Just found out I have heterozygous Factor V Leiden
IVF #1
Nov 4 - Nov 9 – estrace (2 mg x2/day)
AF – Nov 8, 2010
Nov 11 - commenced antibiotics, Gonal F (300) and Luveris (75)
accupuncture 2x/week while stimming
Nov 15 - commenced Centrotide (.25)
saw a hematologist (re Factor V Leiden) who said ignore it (and return after 3 m/cs)-- NOT impressed!!
Nov 21 - HCG trigger
Nov 23 - ER - 13 eggs; icsi for all, 8 fertilized
Nov 26 - ET - 3 transferred (2-9 cells, 1-8 cells)

Because Red Raspberry Leaf tea is a uterine tonic and can cause mild uterine contractions it should be drank sparingly in pregnancy until after 36 weeks (full term) at which point a cup a day would be fine. For the same reason, it is probably best to not drink it during the 2ww.
