I gave up caffeine for my IVF cycle and I'm still not drinking any. I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant. I'm not sure how safe herbal teas are during pregnancy.

Does anyone know of a safe, caffeine free hot beverage one can enjoy while being pregnant?

Thanks so much!

Hi, Some herbal tea's are safe. I really like Chai tea with soya milk.. Also any fruit flav.. tea's are good. Just stay away from Green tea's and chinese type tea's.

Hope this helps!

I have also seen a tea called "pregnancy tea". I think it is kind of minty and caffeine free.

Good luck to you and your bean.

I gave up caffiene as well, and if you read the ingredients for the English Toffee drink at Tim's, you find that it is caffiene free. No instant coffee.

Thanks for asking this question. I have been wondering the same thing. Does anyone know is decaf coffee okay? I have been steering clear of everything just in case.

Oh and some coffee places you can get a steamed milk. Never tried one but was thinking it could be a good substitute.

Absolutely! It has some trace amount of caffeine , but it is negligeble. TRhat amiount of caffeine you can find in many things like cocoa powder etc.

Decaf coffee is okay from the caffeine point of view, but some of the processes they use to decaffeinate it leave trace amounts of scary chemicals. So I still wouldn't overdo.

My personal favourite coffee/tea substitute is rooibos herbal tea. I haven't heard anything bad about it yet. I'm sure the best policy about herbal teas is not to drink huge amounts of any one (and stay away from any of the medicinal ones).

Heres one idea....now that we need to get more calcium, it works for that too. One time at Starbucks they were sellng a 'Steamed milk drink' and it has flavor in it too. I have been making it at home ever since. And I am a coffee junkie, so if this satisfies me, then it should for anyone. I think sometimes I just want the comfort of a hot drink, not necesarily the caffeine. So what you do is heat up a cup of milk and then add your favorite flavor (mine is coconut extract)...so YUMMY.

I have been drinking decaf coffee, but now that I heard it has some chemicals in it, I think I wil stop. I am trying to stay clear of as many chemicals as I can.

I do the same with milk, but with vanilla added, I find this to be more relaxing than stimulating tho', so I've been substituting ginger ale for my morning coffee - I heat it in the microwave and the fizzy, warm, gingery-ness gives me that 'wake up and face the day' feeling.

I'd actually be careful of herbal teas as some can cause contractions (e.g. raspberry leaf tea + ones with things like hibiscus isn't good...and I'l find that different websites provide different information on if they're safe or not). I've even read that pregnancy teas should be avoided.

During tx I swtiched to decaf coffee that was made without chemicals (i.e. swiss water method). I personally don't drink this anymore although it is probably ok.

Sometimes I'll drink mock coffee drinks that are made from things like barely, but to be honest, they're not very good.

Hot milk and honey is an idea - or even hot water with a bit of juice to make it like an herbal tea.

An sometimes I'll treat myself to hot chocolate as even though I don't drink coffee anymore (which i miss so much), I do still have chocolate.

Wow, information overload on every forum! How soon before transfer should you cut out caffiene? Doesn't pop (ex. gingerale) and chocolate have caffiene? or is a little okay? I am not a huge coffee drinker, but love french vanilla and chai tea. I guess my biggest question is how far before transfer or retrieval should I be adjusting my diet? Should I get a pregnancy diet book now, I am currently on wait list hoping for July/August dates?

I know, there is so much to take in!!!! I think the sooner you're able to cut caffeine out of your diet the better. I didn't want to go through caffeine withdrawl when cycling so I got it all out of my system before this. I think I would have felt worse being on all the meds and also having caffeine withdrawl symptoms. But, there are some ladies who still had some caffeine through their IVF process. Good Luck with whatever you decide to do!!!
(p.s. I never gave up chocolate, I COULD NOT do that!!!!!!)

While many pops do have caffeine, ginger ale is caffeine free. As I understand it both black and green teas contain caffeine to varying degrees based on blend and processing.

I believe that too and if I was 'normal' in terms of my fertility, wouldn't consider anything beyond maybe reducing my regular intake. But there is some evidence that maybe, perhaps, eliminating caffeine might, possibly, improve outcome in those with fertility issues. That's the only reason I'm cutting it. I just want to feel like I've done everything I can and reduce my 'what ifs' and 'if onlys' at the end of all this.

Here's hoping we all get to celebrate being knocked up - with a cuppa!

Someone posted that the English Toffess from Tim horton's doesn't have any caffeine in it. I am not sure about if you buy the mix and make at home, but the stuff you buy at Tim's definately has caffeine in it (though not quite as much as coffee and has so much sugar, might want to stay away from due to gestational diabetes. I revently found the White Hot Chocolate at Starbucks to be very yummy - it has no caffeine (but again lots of sugar) and I love it. I also make myself hot chocolate once in a while.

Thanks to all those who posted info about herbal teas and decaf - good info to know!

I know some time has passed since the last post, but I've been trying to do some research about herbal teas and caffeine. I was given this webpage from a friend and found it helpful because it outlined caffeine in a lot of different types of beverages (some I didn't even know about): http://www.energyfie...ffeine-database

Cheers :th_acof:
