I just sent three good grade blastocysts for PGS testing. I am 42 years old. Can I have any hope?

I have heard that at my age only 20% of the blasts are normal. In that case I will not have any normal PGS.

 

Please share your information and success stories?

@MGMO, I am 41 and have gone through 4 IVF cycles. In our last cycle in August 2021, we were lucky enough to have 3 day 6 blastocysts. They were sent out for PGS testing and we were overjoyed to learn 2 were normal! So there is hope! Best wishes and please keep us updated.

Thank you Brearyhopeful: Congratulations. May I ask how many blastocysts did you have in other cycles that did not give you a normal one?

One thing interesting in the article you (Cottone3) sent is that the probability of having a normal embryo in the old age range is higher than what I found in other resources.

I found that for 42 yo, only 20% of the blastocysts are genetically normal but here it is 34% (with 1-3 day 5 embryos) !

If I want to consider the 20%, I have almost no chance, unless I be lucky person which I am not usually.

 

This is my second IVF cycle. In my first cycle I have only one blast which was abnormal.

Unfortunately even if there is a normal embryo, that is only 65-80% chance of a take home baby. My RE says 65%, I've seen other sources say the 80%.

@MGMO, I have an ovarian cyst and a bunch of fibroids so in our last 3 IVF cycles, they were only able to retrieve eggs from one ovary. I also have egg quality issues, likely due to age and my cyst. In the 4 cycles we did, we got a total of 27 eggs, only 5 made it to be day 5/6 blasts. We did test all 5 and 3 were normal.

My wife underwent 3 rounds of IVF when she was 36/37. First cycle only gave 2 blasts (1 normal), second cycle only 1 blast (normal), and third cycle only 1 blast (normal).

 

First FET was unsuccessful (later determined through ERA needed 1 more day of progesterone).  Second FET successful.  Third successful, but waiting for 8 week scan.

 

Hope all 3 of your embryos come back normal and you have a successful transfer!

It depends on many reasons, I know ladies aged 40+ who conceived naturally with no issues, and women who are 25+ and have had a few negative IVFs. Trust your doc, follow their recommendations, and prepare your body and mind for the future treatment. All the best
