Hello all – I need some help please. I am having issues with trying to get my uterine lining thickened enough to go through with our first FET. Here is my story and everything we have tried so far:

Got pregnant naturally in March 2016, had miscarriage at 6-7 weeks and a D&C first week May 2016. I was told my uterus tilts backwards. We decided to see a Reproductive Endocrinologist (RE) in June 2016. I have a history of longer cycles, usually ovulated around days 23-27.

RE wanted to try IUI first, so in August I took Femara to help me ovulate but it did not work so RE cancelled the IUI. During multiple appts with the RE he had mentioned I had a thin lining.

We then decided to go straight to IVF. I had a hysteroscopy in September 2016 and the results were fine. I had the HSG dye test and my tubes were fine.

RE tried an estrogen priming protocol in November 2016 for IVF but I did not respond so he cancelled the cycle before I even started stim medications. In December, I went on birth control pills for 3 weeks. I got the green light to begin IVF in January 2017. I was on 2 vials of menopur and started on 300u of Gonal-F but after 3 days it was increased to 450u. I stimmed for a total of 11 days before triggering and retrieval. At time of retrieval in January, my lining was 6.9 – RE said this is the thickest he had seen me have. My estrogen was 2975. We did not do a fresh transfer b/c we were doing genetic testing, from which we have 2 normal embryos (results rec’d Feb).

When I got my March period I contacted the office. In April they put me on oral estrace (3mg twice a day) to try and thicken my lining. I was on that for a few weeks before he added ½ tab estrace vaginally twice a day, for about a week or longer. My lining never went above 3.8. At this time I was also taking trental twice a day, vitamin e twice a day, and baby aspirin at night. I had been doing acupuncture since November 2016.

In June, we tried low dose stims to increase my lining – 150u of Gonal-F. I was also taking the trental, vitamin e, and baby aspirin, and having acupuncture. My lining went to 5.9, estrogen was 4,000 and we had to stop b/c my follicles were huge.

In July my RE put me on 40mg of Tamoxifen for 5 days. I went for an US & blood work a week later, lining was 5. He brought me back another week later, follicle was only 7mm and lining 4.9. RE increased Tamoxifen to 80mg for 5 days. Went for blood work and US 4 days later – showed no follicles and thin lining. He brought me back 5 days later, lining 3.8, follicle only 11mm, estrogen was 77.  So he wants me to go back on this coming Monday, 8/21 for blood & US.

  • Does anyone have any ideas of what else could be tried to thicken my lining?
  • Has anyone does a transfer with high estrogen levels and lining of 5-6?
  • RE had mentioned estrogen patches with vaginal estrace but would that even work if the oral and vaginal didn’t work the first time?

The only good thing is that every US I have had showed that I have a good triple layer with my lining. It is just very upsetting that we have these 2 embryos and can’t go ahead with a transfer b/c of my thin lining. Thank you for any ideas.

After my D/C, I had a lot of trouble getting my lining to thicken up. I tried everything from natural remedies to high doses of tamoxifin and vaginal viagra, which were both counter-productive. What finally worked for me was exercise-low impact and vitamin B-12, reducing my stress levels and eating protein. I do though want to mention that what works for one may of course not work for another. I am sorry that you are having a hard time and I hope you find answers. The protocol I responded extremely well to was 1200mg of B-12, Climara patches-3 for 7 days then change. baby aspirin, vitamin E, 1.5mg of vaginal estrace. I walked for 30 minutes each day, ate protein daily, drank lemon with water daily to stop inflammation and did Reiki to balance my chakra's. Hope it helps.

Shore555- sorry you are going through this. I am sadly in almost the exact same boat.I did IVF in jan 2016 had 5 embryos. 2 failed. third try was BFP and then lost at 7 weeks. I had a D&C and could no longer get my lining up again.  I have also since had surgery to remove fibroids that they thought were the reason my lining would not thicken and instead it made things worse.  I just tried the EVERYTHING protocol, 4 estrogen patches  every 2 days, 4 viagra suppositories a day, 1 estrace pill vaginally a day, 1 aspirin a day and a cup of pomegranate juice a day. had ultrasound yesterday and lining is at 4mm.

as amazinggrace said - what works for one (or many) clearly does not work for others. i strongly believe there is a huge part that is part coincidence and part unknown.  but I have gone for second opinions to 2 other RE's and the consensus is that D&C's and any other procedures on the uterus cause damage that may not be reversible

I totally sympathize. I struggled with a thin lining for almost two years before finally finding a magic combination that worked - oral Estrace, vaginal Viagra and Fragmin. My lining got to 7.1 mm -- nothing too amazing by most normal women's standards -- but it finally led to a long awaited BFP. I'm now 16 weeks pregnant with twins. I'm still in shock that it finally worked. There were two "thin lining" threads on this site that helped me. I'll see if I can find them and bump them for you. They were really useful.

Have you tried neuopogen wash?
I have chronic thin lining and it took about 3 months of supplements and acupuncture, then estrace vaginally plus estrogen patches, plus a neuopogen wash for me to get over 8mm.
As others have said, it seems to be unique for us all which regime works. I used black cohosh for 3 months to work on my estrogen receptors along with vit e and other supplements. My cancelled cycle I had terrible symptoms from the estrace and only got to 5mm. The cycle that I got to 8mm I was taking much more estrogen for longer but felt great and had few side effects in comparison.
Still no take home baby for me but I'm hopeful I have a regime for my thin lining for my next try.
Sorry you're dealing with this. Highly recommend the thread that was bumped for you to read. I got so many recommendations from it.

Graceland - how long did you do protocols for lining before it worked? did you ever try the same protocol more than once?

Elle, for a few cycles we tried Estrace, Sildenafil and Tamoxifen. It worked -- sort of. My lining got nice and thick (I believe up to 8-9 mm once) but a side effect of Tamoxifen for some women is cysts in the uterus. So I also got those, which made for less than ideal transferring conditions. My RE decided to ditch the Tamoxifen and that's what finally worked. I also tried loads of other things -- low dose stims (didn't work), platelet-rich plasma infusion (didn't work), all sorts of different forms of estrogen (patches, vaginal, oral)... you get the idea. I honestly think every woman is different and there's no magical solution that will work for everyone. Hopefully you have an RE who's open to ideas and is willing to troubleshoot with you.

For additional context, my egg retrieval was in August 2015 and our successful transfer was in May 2017. Frustratingly, it took that long to finally figure things out. It was super hard, but there was a light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck to anyone dealing with this issue. I sincerely wish you the best!

Amazing Grace - thank you for the response. I have not tried Vitamin B-12 but it is something I think I will start taking. My RE had mentioned estrace patches as a potential next protocol, so def something to consider for me as well. I am making more of an effort to get more protein into my diet now - fish and chicken and good veggies. I'm pretty good with the activity, trying to get at least 10,000 steps a day. I appreciate your advice and will definitely try your suggestions.

Hi ladies, thought I'd bump this old post to see if we can get some more ideas.  My wife was on estrace 2mg three times daily orally for 1 week, but her lining came back at 5.5mm.  They added estrace 2mg vaginally twice daily for 1 week and her lining still only at 6.9mm.  They've now put her on estraderm 100mcg patch with estrace 2mg vaginally twice daily.  My wife asked about viagra vaginally but our RE didn't seem convinced it would help, but eventually did agree to try it, so she's supposed to insert regular viagra 50mg tablets vaginally once daily as well. She's already on pomegranate juice, acupuncture, and now even taking L-lysine supplements.  Wondering if there is anything else we can try?  It's so frustrating we worked so hard just to get 3 embryos, and now we can't even transfer them until her lining is thicker!

Hey there hopefuldadsomeday,

I'm sorry to hear about your wife's lining issues. It can be unbelievably frustrating. The specifics of my successful protocol included:

-Estrace 4 mg orally twice daily (= 8 mg total) increasing to three times daily after one week (= 12 mg total)
-Sildenafil (generic Viagra) 25 mg vaginally four times daily (= 100 mg daily)

Hopefully the larger Estrace dose in combination with Viagra will be a difference maker for your wife. Best of luck!

Hi- how was her lining when you were stimming? What helped in my case was gonal f (estentially doing a mini ivf) without the extraction.

Graceland - thanks for posting your successful protocol.  I hope the Viagra will be the difference maker for us!

Chil22 - I just checked her US results on ER date.  IVF #1 - 6.66mm, IVF #2 - 6.73mm,  IVF #3 - 9.51mm (not sure if this was a mistake?), so looks like she does have a history of thin lining.  Unfortunately, she was on birth control for almost 10 years and had a D&C with our 2nd miscarriage, I suspect this may have a played a role.  Hopefully we get good results next week, if not, I will get my wife to ask the RE about possibly using the stims again, thanks for the suggestion.

Endometrial scratch the cycle prior may help (if this time doesn't end up working).  Low dose aspirin may increase blood flow to uterus.  Moderate exercise may increase blood flow.  Isn't there an asthma drug that is also used sometimes with Viagra for severe cases?  Just throwing out ideas.  I have not had lining issues myself (but always fearing that could be the "next thing" in the "everything that can go wrong will" saga)

Hopefuldad - there are a few of us with thin lining issues that have recently been prescribed the mini stim protocol as Chil22 suggests. However looking at your wife's numbers from her IVF, I would not put my hopes on that for you. Let's hope the extra estrace and viagara do the trick. Maybe next time try all vaginal estrace? It has been shown to be more effective.

I usually didnt have lining issues but the cycle that I did we seitched to vaginal twice a day and oral once a day for my estrace which seemed to help a bit.
If you are doing acupunture see if increasing number of treatments a week would help. I went that route as well

Cycle officially cancelled, after adding patches and sildenafil suppositories, her lining actually DECREASED to 4.7mm.  WTF?  RE has suggested we try a natural FET next cycle.  Will update next cycle.  Thanks for the support ladies!

Any chance she could have ovulated? Progesterone can decrease the lining (to no detriment).

Hi Returnable, my wife was also certain that she ovulated, however the bloodwork confirmed that she did NOT ovulate.  The clinic is not too sure what happened either.  My wife was on OCP for 10 years prior to us trying, and we suspect that is the major reason for our thin lining.  We read an article that said women with thin lining due to prolonged OCP use may be resistant to exogenous estrogen treatment, we'll have to ask our RE when he call us to discuss the next steps.
