Christmas drama

We've been so lucky so far.

Success on our first IVF after a year of trying and a miscarriage in 2008. The first trimester I had a lot of scary clots due to a subchorionic hematoma but it cleared up at 12w and since then things have been plain sailing. Well, until Dec 23rd.

I had a bit of mucus that had during the 22nd become tinged with blood so went to the doctor on the 23rd (first day of Christmas vacation!). My cervix did seem to be soft and slightly open, though still seeming with some length but my doc sent me right away to the hospital for further assessment. After a very long day, some exams and ultrasound I was admitted overnight with concern about my cervix, which seemed to be dynamic, lengthening and shortening.

The next morning the concerns turned out to be justified as my cervix was measuring very short, so I was quickly into surgery for a cerclage to put a stitch in, started on IV antibiotics and a week of hospital bedrest. Things were quiet through Christmas day, but I woke in the early hours of Boxing day to discover my membranes had ruptured. Things have been monitored ever since and so far we're stable. Bedrest will now continue for the foreseeable future.

Not really sure what will happen next. Today we are at 23w6d and that is not good odds if labour were to start. But every single day makes a difference. We are trying to stay focused on the short term and not get ahead of ourselves.

Best case scenario is that things stabilize and we manage to get a few more weeks under our belt, despite the ruptured membranes. It turns out that amniotic fluid is replenished by the baby's pee and throughout she has had a good strong heartbeat and no obvious signs of distress. Everything gets monitored every few hours.

So those are the facts.

Since admission on the 23rd I am on 100% strict bedrest, flat on my back getting up only for bathroom. Bedrest was always my worst nightmare and now it's my fervent hope it will continue for many weeks! Funny how your perspective can change in an instant.

Christmas, always one of my favorite holidays, went past in a blur and was not exactly the Christmas we had planned. But we saw family, opened presents, even ate some very excellent turkey. And there were no fights or tense moments!

The doctors and nurses here are wonderful and we are lucky to be in the best possible place.

DH and I are closer than ever and facing whatever comes next with as much courage and positive spirits as we can muster.

Things could be a lot worse. But then they could be a lot better too!

Keep us in your thoughts and prayers, and perhaps our luck will hold and we'll continue to beat the odds.

I'm definitely praying for you, your family, and your little sweetheart.
