A sad day in my corner of the world

I need to acknowledge a tragedy that has touched me today. I work in a corner of the New Zealand fishing industry, and that industry is a small one operating in cold and hostile waters that has today suffered the loss of six of our number. A large fishing boat sunk suddenly this morning around 400 miles off our coastline, resulting in the loss of six of the 51 crew aboard (the 45 survivors made it onto lifeboats and were taken aboard other ships in the vicinity). I didn't know the men who passed away, but my heart goes out to their families and to my friends who are involved in the company that employed them.

It's never been an easy job, and what with the environmental degradation and overfishing that's occurred in so many places, fishermen (fishers?) have a hard go these days. It's terribly sad to hear of a tragedy like this.

My thoughts are also with our fellow countrymen and women, sorry for their loss. It tough that a new life begins at the same time as other lives are being taken away. Hugs to you in SI.
