Hi ladies. I have a question in regards to your thoughts on FET - transferring TWO embryos vs. one. Which of you had 2 embryos transferred during FET - and did any of them implant, resulted in pregnancy, or failed?

Recently my friends forwarded an article to me, which said the recent study showed that '...Using TWO embryos for IVF could cut the chance of having a baby by 25% because the womb may reject them if one is of poor quality' - a study of almost 1500 embryos was carried out at Nurture Fertility clinic in Nottingham.

From my own experience: in 2014 - FET, we had 2 embryos transferred  - none of them implanted.

2016 - again, FET - 2 embryos transferred - none of them implanted (thankfully, we have a wonderful 1-year old son from the same fresh cycle).

This year we'll be undergoing another FET (still have 3 frozen embryos) and was thinking about transferring 2 of them. But after reading about this study, I'm contemplating having just 1 transferred (since we already failed twice, after 2-embryo transfers).

Which of you had 2 embryos transferred during FET - and did they implant? And 2nd question, if it's not too much to ask, how old were you at the time of transfer? (I'll be 39 by the time of my next FET). Thank you for your help and good luck!

My preference is one at a time. If for some reason things aren't ideal in a transfer month I would prefer to lose one embryo than two.

Also, while twins can be great I've also heard some difficult situations as well with them and it wasn't worth the risk for me.

My first FET I only had one (negative), second I did two and regretted it (again negative). On my donor cycle, which is basically same prep as FET except embryos are fresh, I opted for one (negative).

Hi,
I also heard about this study, but I couldn't find it in scientific journals. May be it is not published yet, but it is in the news. But I guess it could be true and I am gonna transfer only one embryo, although I always dream about having twins. Worst case scenario I need to repeat it for the other embryo next month.

I really think there is little rhyme or reason and really up to the embryos and a little simple luck whether they take. I transferred two top quality perfect looking blasts with my first fresh cycle and neither took. My first fet I transferred two and one took although I miscarried at nine weeks. Second cycle I transferred two average embryos and both took resulting in twins and my second fet I transferred one sad looking degenerating embryo and it resulted in my daughter. My crazy mishmash of results would have me believe that transfering one or two ultimately made no difference on end result and especially that the not so beautiful embryos are capable of producing the beautiful babies.

I had two transferred and have twins. I did a natural transfer which to date was the only thing that worked for me. No meds. I was 36 at time of transfer. I have 5 frosties left but from now on will only transfer one at a time because I don't want another set of twins.

I had two top quality hatching morulas transferred (DE cycle) and had a singleton pregnancy. In my regular ivf fresh cycle we transferred two three day embryos of ok quality and had a miscarriage at seven weeks. I have had five losses to date with my OE though. And two living non ivf children from when I was in my twenties (42 now).

See about me page.

That sounds like an interesting study because it would run counter to the general belief that transferring two increases the chance of pregnancy (but also multiples).  It might be a good question to pose in the "Ask the RE" section.  I wonder if Dr. Hartman has seen this study and if he thinks there's merit in it.  For me personally, we transferred two in a fresh cycle and ended up with one sticking, then in a FET transferred one and it didn't stick.  I wish you all the best with your little embabies and whatever you decide.

In my previous IVF cycle we only had day-3 embryos which my RE suggested two at a time for my fet's, but if they were day-5 embryos it would have only been one at a time. First fet was a BFN and second resulted in my daughter.

See full journey details on my profile:

About Us:

Me: 38 yrs old, very high AMH levels with a high follicle count "PCOS-like ovaries"; on Metformin for this

DH: 37 yrs old; low testosterone; very low sperm count; on Clomid for testosterone

IVF Cycle #2: Project Sibling (2016)

Stim protocol:

- SD 1-4: 150 units of Puregon + 75 units of Menopur

- SD 5-10 same as above + 250 units of Orgalutran gets added

- RE decided on 5,000 units of hCG trigger instead of Lupron trigger; freeze all ('high responder' so at very high risk for OHSS)

Cycle Info:

Oct. 18: CD3= SD1: start stims at night: Puregon 150 + Menopur 75 8PM; baseline blood work and u/s (over 12 follicles on each side); Estradiol 96 pmol/L, FSH 5.4, LH 4.7, Prolactin 6.5, TSH 2.42, Progesterone 0.4.

Oct. 22: CD7= SD5: Puregon dropped to 100 + Menopur 75 8PM + 250 mcg of Orgalutran got added (12PM); blood work & u/s done (12+ follies 8-11mm); Estradiol 1398 pmol/L, LH 1.3

Oct. 27: SD10: Puregon dropped to 50 + Menopur 75 8PM + hCG 1/2 dose (5,000 units) trigger at 10:30PM (retrieval Sat. Oct. 29); blood work & u/s done (R side: 9 follicles 17, 2 @ 18, 5 @ 19, 21mm....L side: 6 follicles: 3 @ 18, 17, 2 @ 20mm); Estradiol 10, 858 pmol/L

Oct. 28: Doxycyliine 2x daily for 4 days gets added

Oct. 29: Retrieval - 23 eggs retrieved; will be a freeze all

Oct. 30: Day 1 report: out of 23 eggs 11 were mature and icsi'ed and 10 fertilized

Oct. 31: Day 2 report: 10 embryos still going; all grade 2 quality; 7 are 4 cells, 2 are 5 cells and 1 is 3 cells

Nov. 1: Day 3 report: 10 embryos still going; all grade 2 quality; 6 are 10 cells, 1 is 9 cells, 2 are 8 cells and 1 is 7 cells; no report until day 6 to see how many made it to day 5 or 6 blasts.

Nov. 2: Dostinex 0.5mg every other day for a total of 8 days has started to alleviate OHSS

Nov. 4: Day 6 report: 5 embryos on ice... yay! 4 day-5s (4AA and 3 are 4BC quality) and 1 day-6 (5BC quality)

Nov. 8: started Dostinex 0.5mg every other day to reduce OHSS

FET #1 - Non-medicated cycle (2017)

Jan.20: CD3 - u/s and b/w= 5mm lining; E2 <18, LH 5.06 IU/L, FSH 5.36 IU/L, Prolactin 7.77 Ng/mL, TSH 2.41 IU/L, Progesterone 1.33 nmol/L; back in on CD11; acupuncture treatment once a week until FET

Jan. 28: CD11 -

- SD 5-10: Same as above (though may get decreased) + 250 mcg of Orgalutran gets added

- Lupron trigger and freeze all

- Endometrin 3x daily until we knew for sure it was a freeze all

- Retrieval: 22 eggs retrieved; 8 injected (ICSI); 6 fertilized (the rest were either premature or had already degenerated); 4 embryos divided - 2 embryos are 4 cell grade 1, 1 embryo is 5 cell grade 2, and 1 embryo is 8 cell grade 2
