I am really hoping for a clear answer here. My husband and I would like to try for another baby but since my first, I have been on ERFA desiccated thyroid and while I am feeling better, my doctor has given me very mixed messages about trying to get pregnant while on it. I have never had problems with my TSH but my T3 was below range before going on the meds. Now my free T4 and T3 are getting better but my TSH is suppressed.  An endocrinologist I saw told me I should definitely not plan on having another baby because it would certainly result in birth defects because of the suppressed TSH (which I thought was normal).

 

I would love some help. I am too scared to try but cannot see the fertility specialist until we do.

Hi atalanta - I'm sorry to hear you've been told you'll have challenges and are unsure what path to take. Unfortunately I don't believe you'll be able to find a "yes" or "no" answer here. any medical professional would be unable to give you specific medical advice pertaining to your individual situation without reviewing your medical history. Also - while I'm not familiar with your issues and wouldn't pretend to be...it could be your specific condition is in an grey area and it's not possible to say with any degree of certainty what the probable outcomes are. Hoping you find the guidance you're looking for when you meet with your RE.

Doesn't say anything at all about concerns with use for pregnancy or breastfeeding, and it is basically something that your body should be making and isn't, or isn't making enough of, so it stands to reason that there wouldn't be any conern, but as CHG said, you definitely should discuss this with your own medical team. I have been on synthroid for years, totally safe for pregnancy as far as I was told.

Thank you so much NO and CHG.  I really appreciate the support. 

 

I am just so fearful that if I go ahead, it will be my fault that there are complications with the pregnancy and problems for the baby.  It's such a tough journey regardless.  

 

My naturopath has told me that everything should be totally fine on the desiccated meds but my doctor said it isn't advisable.  The endo I saw was awful and didn't know a thing about this med.  I don't have any plans to see an RE or resources which is why I wanted to check in here.

It sounds like this needs to be explored further 

The use of dessicated animal thyroid is not commonly prescribed by most REs, so I would suggest getting an opinion from another endocrinologist and work with them and your RE prior to trying to conceive.

There are very clear guidelines for how to manage thyroid diseases in and around pregnancy. TSH, t4, and t3 targets are different than I'm non-pregnant women. The impact on baby's brain development can be significant. I would be very cautious using a dessicated animal product and would personally work with my endocrinologist or RE to get onto the regular form before moving forward.
