Hi there,

just looking for some success stories or encouragement as our very dear donor (20) had given us 11 eggs. We fertilized only two due to ethics and neither fertilized. \

The doctor is unsure why but stated that the eggs "didn't look great". My donor did possibly have strep throat at the beginning of her cycle and was on antibiotics but I just dont think that is a big concern as I have read that lots of girls on here continued with their IVF cycle with no problems with strep throat and bronchitis.

(the fertility dr wasn't aware of this until the end but her GP said it wouldn't be a problem at all for the cycle.)

So the good news is we still have 9 frozen eggs still. We are waiting to speak to the dr next week on the plan as she would like to speak to the lab tech in depth about what could have happened as she didn't expect such a poor out come even with only two eggs.

It is just so heartbreaking after all this and even everything that our sweet donor had put in.

Any thoughts? any success stories with poor egg quality with an egg donor or what could have happened?

thank you

Hi babysunshine - I'm very sorry the two eggs selected didn't fertilize. I don't think anyone could really speak to the results as the two eggs selected may not be indicative of the remaining 9. My suspicion is that your RE might be able to offer some vague ideas but without fertilizing the entire cohort it simply isn't possible to speak to fertilization issues without an appropriate sample size. Best of luck as you navigate next steps you can feel comfortable with.
It was long, awful & hard. We got very lucky and didn't run out of both emotional and financial resources. We saw some of the most beautiful of people in our lowest moments. Baby Girl arrived Apr 10/2018

Thinking of you....hopefully the rest of the eggies are good quality!!!!! I'm sure your RE will give you a good advise what the next step should be...our donor had 44 eggs retrieved but only 24 fertilized....so it's hard to know which egg is great which isn't....you can just thaw them in two batches and see what happens. Good luck!!!

Thanks so much for ur thoughts and kind words.
Can eggs be eye balled for quality?
My RE commented that they didn't look good.
I always thought egg quality is only predicted if they fertilize.

There are some egg issues that can be seen before fertilization as well. But a lot of what happens in fertilization and inplantation and achieving a healthy pregnancy is still a mystery! So just because the egg doesn't look perfect doesn't necessarily mean it won't work for sure.

Good luck. Kmfx that you have success. And if this doesn't work you may want to look into programs that guarantee at least two AA blasts for transfer (many overseas clinics do this).

Babysunshine,

I'm sorry that your RE says the eggs don't look good visually.

Yes- you can see under a microscope the difference between a healthy egg and a bad egg.  But that doesn't predict for sure whether it will work or not.  A grainy looking egg or a poor quality embryo can result in a live, healthy child, and a great looking egg can fail to implant as a embryo.  It's more about probability of what's going to work.

Good luck with making your decision and moving forward!

Here's some links to pictures of good looking eggs versus grainy, poor quality eggs:

In terms of donor egg quality, does anyone know if the number of times someone has donated impacts the quality? I am considering a donor that has already donated 3 times with good results but I was wondering if there's a limit on how many times someone should donate before there are issues either in egg quality or health of the donor. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Our donor donated 4 times and the results just got better and better...but of course the embryo quality also depends on the sprem. But if your hubby has no problem , choosing a proven donor is the best way to go. It's a piece of mind for sure.....good luck! Maybe one more thing....make sure that they keep her on the same protocol as before!!!

Having done multiple cycles is likely a good thing since the doctor can have a good comparison of what meds worked best for the donor. I've done many cycles and my results have remained very consistent. As for health of the donor- that's a pretty big mystery as there aren't any long term studies done on egg donors unfortunately.

Sorry to hear that baby sunshine. This ivf is sometimes a rocky road to go on. I had a young, 24 very healthy donor. She was fit, proper weight, ate organic, and had a wonderful personality. She was a donor that we connected on another support site. For my last OE ivf I had 6follicles or which 3fert. For my age of 43that was very good. For her retrieval we also retrieved 6 and the same 3fert. I had her 3 transfered and none took. My point is as mentioned in this thread, the best option is to use eggs from a donor where there is a history of successful pregnancies. My donor that time was a first time donor and had never been pregnant. For all my ivfs my donors have all been private (no agency) Hope & prayers

I had understood that It is frowned upon a donor giving more then 5 times.  Exceptions can be made for families to have siblings, but more then 5 donations were frowned upon.
