Curious if anyone else is dealing with this.

My husband and I just did a round of IVF. Everything went as planned at the start. 20 eggs were retrieved and the next day my doctor called to tell me there was no fertilization. At a follow up appointment 2 weeks later my doctor informed my husband and I that multiple sperm entered all 20 eggs. My doctor states this is very rare and they hadn't even seen it before. Wondering if IVF with ICSI is the right next step for us or if an egg donor will be needed??? Don't really want to go through IVF all over again for another negative response. Was wondering if anyone else has had this issue or heard of someone with the same.

-Any help is appreciated.

Thanks :)

Hi Amanda - I'm really sorry to hear about your failed IVF...that's heartbreaking.  I can't offer you any expertise on PCOS as I have the exact opposite diagnosis...but I can say that ICSI is probably a good idea to discuss with your RE.  ICSI ensures that only one sperm enters each egg.  It does not guarantee fertilization...but...it would eliminate the issue of multiple sperm entering an egg.  I would suspect (again better conversation to have with your RE) that an egg donor would only be discussed if there was an egg quality issue, which, per your above description doesn't seem to be the case.

Best of luck with your next go round!

It was long, awful & hard. We got very lucky and didn't run out of both emotional and financial resources. We saw some of the most beautiful of people in our lowest moments. Baby Girl arrived Apr 10/2018

This is interesting because I just went through and IVF with ICSI and 2 of my fertilized embryos were fertilized with more than 1 sperm!  How the heck does this happen with ICSI!!

I'm no expert but from my understanding when doing IVF with ICSI they are injecting only one sperm... I'm also unsure how there was multiple in your case.
