Good day everyone.
I had a hsg on monday and found out both fallopian tubes are blocked. I have an appt this Friday with my dr to discuss the results of my hsg and possibly doing a laproscopy. I wanted to go into my appt knowing what my decision would be. When I say decision it is because I researched as soon as I found out about my results. And I came across ohip funding for blockages. Has anyone went this route..what was the process? Is it as cookie cutter straight forward as it reads online or is there alot of steps beforehand or fine print? Thank you.

I can't speak knowledgeably to OHIP funding not being an Ontario resident, but did wish to comment that there are different types of blockages in fallopian tubes...it would be important to know what type of blockage you have to determine your next steps.

Are your tubes blocked from scar tissue?  Are they blocked from endo?  Do you have hydrosalpinxes?  If it's hydros...they absolutely must be dealt with before moving on to IVF as the fluid build up is toxic and kills embryos developing in the uterus.  I don't have endo but if it is suspected to be endo...I'd think you'd want a lap done in order to determine if anything needs to be lasered & ablated in order for you to move forward with the best chance of success.

As much as we'd love for this process to be black & white...unfortunately more often than not...it turns into shades of grey.

Wishing you the best of luck at your appointment!

Thank you for that information. I don't even know what is causing the blockage. As soon as the hsg was done he said you need to call My office and book my next available time slot.

I find those HSG tests so cold & impersonal...when you desperately want the information you know the RE already has.  I'm glad you were able to get in on Wednesday and hope your appointment leads to a productive discussion about what will give the best chance of succes.  :)

Omg yes. I waited nearly 2 hours in a hospital gown standing..sitting. ..wondering what was going on before mine. My dr had 2 surgeries booked around my procedure. I tell you..it was agony. I nearly passed out from him just inflating the balloon on the catheter. Most ppl Say it's when the dye breaks through the blockage. I guess it concerns me as to why I was in so much pain for that part when anyone I've talked to said it didn't hurt?

Yup - totally been there.  I waited for ages at the hospital...had a new young doc who couldn't get the catheter in properly...took him 3 tries and I got really stressed out during the process...the entire process really stunk.  I can't say it hurt...but I think the girls with blocked tubes have mentioned that their HSGs were painful?  Mine were fluid blocked...so...no pain really.  Hoping that bodes well for you and that you can avoid surgery.  :)

...sorry to hear of your bad experiences. It's crazy to think what we women will do for a baby. In the end it's worth it but it's certainly painful and uncomfortable. Speaking options over with my husband I think he would prefer i do ivf for random reasons. .1 that I'm scared. I've never had an I. V..an anastetic...and 2. I explained to him if I have the surgery and they unblock me even in the slightest and I still can't get pregnant then ohip is not covered.. what do you do then? Ivf is so expensive

Well...as you're discovering...regrettably there are no easy answers.  I can only share my experience and perceptions...so...I guess I would say that if you were to survey the vetrans on this site...the vast majority (if not all) would tell you that they likely wished they had done more research on clinics/REs/protocols, etc before jumping into treatment...which is of course the last thing anyone who's already been waiting for a baby wants to hear..."please - let's take more time!"  LOL  This being said...properly researching your clinic/RE and putting it into conjunction with your numbers & diagnosis would be the single biggest favor you will ever do yourself.

It is my understanding (and that's it...simply an understanding) that the surgery to unblock tubes is far from guaranteed and that scar tissue can grow back quickly putting you at risk for ectopics.  Not my area of expertise but I would encourage you to research that.  I believe (again...not my area of strength) that the surgery to unblock tubes will result in a baby apprx 40% of the time over a 3 yr period...not great odds and long waiting period...so...depending on your individual numbers & diagnosis...if your clinic has good success rates in your age category...IVF may be your quickest and frankly least expensive option in the long run...the longer time runs on trying procedures with lower success rates...fertility can change on you...

Prior to this journey I was terrified of needles, surgery, anesthesia, etc...and...I think we all are...the fear is much worse than the actual procedure.  :)  It all becomes very easy very quickly.  This is a warm supportive community with lots of experience to draw on.

Good luck on Weds and hope your RE recommends a path you're comfortable with and have confidence in!

Wow...that doesn't seem like very high numbers..I was thinking like 90% success..I just turned 30 in may so I'm still ok but my husband is 36 and I want it...and it seems everyone around me is pregnant. & Thanks, honestly in the last few hours joining this group I've become more comfortable with this situation then these last few weeks of wondering. Thank you. You've really helped!

This community is really a great place for finding women (and men) with similar experiences that are happy to hopefully make the process easier for those that come along...I'm glad you found us. Good luck!

Have you just had the one HSG? I did one and found that one tube was blocked but due to the stressful nature of the test (especially if it took a long time for you) sometimes the tubs seize temporarily. My doctor advised that they could do another test but he does not diagnose as blocked unless he had seen the same result three times. God knows that no one wants to do that three times!!

I should update this post. I wentered for my follow up and came pit mote Co fused then anything. My obgyn in the end decoded to refer me to mt. Sinai and not go with a laproscopy. I asked him to explain what it is and he said. ..it's basically a more invasive way to do a hsg and doesn't fix the issue ..it just gives you a more clear picture of what might be blocking me. I called 2 other obgyn in my area they looked at my results from the hospitals database I guess and they agreed for me not to waste time backtracking locally. ..that mt. Sinai is the place to go? So I am now waiting on a consultation call.
