Hi all, just a quick question.  My husband and I may be going forth with IVF treatments after a failed VR procedure.  My BMI is just over 40 and I was trying to research clinic reviews online and stumbled across some articles saying that Ottawa Fertility denies IVF to women with BMI's over 35.  I am devastated as IVF is basically the only way we can have a child of our own.  Is this true?  I haven't been able to find anymore information on this.  Thanks.

Hi redline,

This issue created quite a fuss when it first made the headlines a few years ago. Not sure if OFC still denies treatment to those with a high BMI, or if it simply recommends that treatment occurs after the BMI is lowered. However, I have a close relationship with the clinic and am happy to ask the question. Just send me a message or an email asking me to do that.

I know several Toronto clinics that do not follow that approach, so at the very least, you could obtain treatment in Toronto.

We were denied treatment of any sort in Saskatoon until my BMI was below 40 for IUI or 35 for IVF. They were very strict on this, refused to budge at all. I had seen a news article that was talking about this very issue, and noticed that Calgary said they didn't agree with such unmovable rules. I called and talked to them about it and they said if there were no other major health issues that BMI wasn't a concern. I would suggest calling the clinic, or others around you to find out for sure,

I had this issue with Victoria Fertility. Regional in Calgary is BM of 45. I cut to the chase and went with Fertility Center Cancun, they don't have a limit.
