Hi there;

The details are in my signature but my RE suspects that I have this.  I will have another ultrasound Friday and then very likely a shot of methotrexate to end the pregnancy.  My RE says that out of 700 FETS he's done he has seen this happen 5 times.  We did genetic screening on the embryo we put in, as well.  The RE  says he thinks it's "mechanical failure".  He also said something about the mucus in my uterus having moved the embryo out of the uterus…?!?

If this happened to you, did you go on to have a normal pregnancy afterward?  And were you given a similar explanation?

I'm just very confused.

Thanks so much for your help!

Hi Tabatha,

I'm so sorry you are facing this situation. I don't know much about your particular type of ectopic as mine was tubal, but I hope you find the answers you were looking for.

There is a website from the UK about ectopic pregnancies. Maybe you can find some info on there? http://www.ectopic.org.uk/

I know from reaching out and reading the stories of many other women that taking the shot is still a journey. You will have your betas monitored until they hit zero which could be weeks. Often, another dose is required.

We have our follow up in a week with our RE. If I gain any more insight into ectopics overall, I'll post an update.

Wishing you the best of luck - meaning a fast dropping beta.  Hang in there. :)

Hi Lebast;

Thanks for your note - I appreciate it.  I gather that the shot is a bit of a process.  My RE said that my HCG should be down within a month (it was 2200 the day before I had the shot), but I am skeptical….hopefully he is right!  Did you have to have the shot as well?  Your experience sounds awful - I'm sorry you had to go through it.

I have two blood tests this week and am praying the HCG has started to fall….

Are you planning another transfer soon?

Take care,

T

I had an interstitual/cornual ectopic that was removed at 16 weeks. I did have another pregnancy almost 10 years later but it was not an easy accomplishment.

I just saw this post and thought I would reply.

I had an interstitial pregnancy this summer. It ruptured at 9 weeks and I had emergency surgery to remove it and my tube. Since I had the pregnancy removed my betas fell very quickly. I had methotrexate to resolve any cells which may have not been removed.

I was told that in subsequent pregnancies I would be considered high risk and that I would not be allowed to go to full term (my guess is because of the surgery, because of the incisions that were made to remove the pregnancy it can make the uterus a little bit sketchy - for lack of a better term). The OB recommended a c-section at 37 weeks to ensure I don't go into labor on my own.

From what I understand, pregnancy after an interstitial is pretty normal but they do want to monitor you.

Anyway, best of luck on your next attempt. It's terrible to have to go through ivf only to have an extremely rare pregnancy result. Luckily you were able to catch it early enough.

Hey Tabatha,

I am so sorry you are going through this :(  In Sept, I transferred two embryo's... one went to the uterus and the other a interstitual/cornual ectopic.  In my case, we waited it out a bit as I didn't want to take MTX as it would have ended both pregnancies.  Luckily, the interstitual/cornual ectopic pregnant failed and resolved on its own.  My body treated it like a miscarriage.  Unfortunately, the pregnancy in the uterus later was discovered to be a blighted ovum.   I hope your pregnancy fails to progress if its in fact where the doctor thinks it is... I'm keeping you in my thoughts. Hugs.

Hi Rokgerl, thanks for your reply and for the information about future pregnancies.  You are right, I was lucky that they caught it early.  It also resolved quickly after I had the methotextrate.  Sending you best wishes, wherever you are in your fertility journey.

Loo, thanks for your thoughts.  This happened to me in October - November, though, and I'm gearing up for my next FET on Feb 3rd.  The RE says this shouldn't happen again, so fingers crossed he's right!  You sure went through a roller coaster; I see you are transferring again soon and I wish you the best of luck.  You've had enough pregnancy drama!!
