Hi everyone,

Just wanted to share my story and receive any feedback or thoughts on my latest cycle. Previously I have done two IUI's with clomid and bloodwork and ultrasound monitoring starting on day 10. This was to be my 3rd IUI with the same protocol.

This time around I had four follicles showing at 10mm on day 10 (previously only ever had one) and was advised that if they all grew the cycle would be cancelled. Day 11 showed only two growing and one bigger than the rest. Day 13 showed only one follicle and a lh surge had been detected. We were told to have intercourse that evening and come in the next day. Day 14 a nurse comes in and tells me my follicle is only at 17mm and that's not a great size for a viable egg and also my estrogen was on the low side (reading around 6000 and should be 8000). She said that we probably wouldn't be going through with an IUI because it's probably a waste of money. She said she'd send the doctor in to talk to us. So he comes in and asks us if we have any questions and I mentioned something about the IUI not going ahead and he looked at us like we were crazy! I told him what the nurse had said and he disagreed with everything! He said something along the lines of goes to show you how  "experience" interprets things differently.  He said he would talk to the nurse about this.  I was left totally perplexed and questioning everything. I hardly ever see the doctor for any of my cycles because the nurses handle everything including the IUI's at my clinic. Was he implying this nurse was new and didn't know what she was talking about??? She was the one who had done my first IUI back in June.  The dr said we would wait to see my bloodwork before booking the next appointment and I explained to him the need for me to be notified at work as soon as possible because taking time off work for appointments is very hard for me. I need to ask people to cover my shifts.

Anyways that afternoon I get a call from a nurse (not at work but on my cellphone which I just happened to have with me at the end of my lunchbreak) and she informs me that my bloodwork says I already ovulated so I had two choices. I could come in to do the IUI that afternoon or try naturally. Since my husband is an hour away from the clinic, there was no way he could leave work and get to the clinic with his sample in the time frame they wanted and I couldn't leave work in the middle of the day. The nurse sounded really disappointed with this. I was really upset about this conversation and the way the day went in general. Last cycle my nurse gave me the ovidrel shot to take home incase I needed it and after she saw my blookwork and saw I was surging, told me to inject it and come in the next day for the IUI. Why was this time any different? I'm angry that they missed my window of opportunity. I feel like I spent a week of poking and prodding and drugging myself for no reason now.

This IUi was to be our last one before discussing with the doctor a new protocol if it didn't work. Now I don't know where we lie and the nurse said she'd have the dr review my case and get in touch with us in the next couple of weeks. Somehow I feel that i won't even hear from them and I'll end up contacting them.

Argh!!! Sorry about the long rant. This has just been going on for a year at this clinic and I'm sick of waiting for things to happen.

Wow I would be really frustrated with that. It sounds like clinic error to me. That nurse did not have a clue what she was talking about at all. Not even close!! From what you wrote that sounds like a textbook IUI cycle.

If I were you I wouldn't wait for them to call. I'd book an appointment ASAP to try and understand how they missed ovulation. You need to be assertive if you feel things aren't right. You are spending a lot of time and paying a lot of money for this. If they felt your egg or lining wasn't ready they could have given you meds to delay ovulation for a little longer and then trigger it with HcG when things looked ready. From what you describe it sounds like someone dropped the ball.

Hope you get some answers soon. Let us know how it goes!

Extremely frustrating and even though things like this shouldn't happen they do. Would it be wrong of me to say that it is negligence on their part? Sometimes I feel that it is just that because we invest so much time, energy and tears into this, call it harsh, but there is no room for errors when dealing with such sensitive issues. My advice to you is to call and book a review appointment with the doctor. Ask as many questions so that you get the answers you want. LJO, I wasted two and a half years with my previous clinic, what I regret most is not moving on sooner and always giving them the benefit of the doubt and making excuses for their incompetence, both here in Canada and the US. Good luck!

Thanks guys I appreciate your feedback. I wasn't sure if I was being overly dramatic. It is so frustrating when you follow all the advice the dr is giving you and doing everything in your power to get pregnant and then something like this happens.

You aren't being dramatic at all. In truth I would be absolutely furious if I were you! Having egg meet sperm is what they are supposed to specialize in!! I really hope your wtf meeting goes well. Maybe you can get a discount if you decide to do another iui with them. Good luck

You are not being dramatic...my honest opinion..take it or leave it, having dealt with the exact same situation with my former clinic my advice would be to run away and find another clinic.  I had the exact same issues with my first clinic and looking back I wish i had run away sooner then later and i wish i had to listen to my gut.  We had cancelled IUI's, they messed up my bloodwork, they weren't the most responsive clinic and my RE just kept pumping me full of clomid...which i have learned is cheap but it's not the right thing for someone of my age to be using.

I really hope you have some success and i'm so sorry you are going through this, it's extremely frustrating, upsetting and don't discount your feelings, you're not being dramatic, i used to think the same thing.

I agree with what's been said here. If you are having doubts with your clinic, it's time to move on. Make the appointment to find out what went wrong, take good notes, and then go elsewhere. At the end of the day, you are the client and they work for you. If they aren't working, find someone who will. And tell the new clinic what went wrong with the old one so they know not to screw you around.

I agree with what has been said above.. definitely time for a second opinion...

me 26, dh 32
