Your clinic may or may not have a donation program in place. I know VFC has one as we are in the process of donating our embryos to another couple. We are doing a full open donation, so we know the people and they know us.

RFP does have a donation program. I know that it is a long process and you have to do home studies etc.

There is some info on their web site http://www.regionalf...tion.php#male-1

I would call the clinic and ask about an appointment to discuss the process.

Thanks to the ladies from this forum we've started the embryo donation process with California Conception clinic (just in case if our ivf doesn't work - we will start that process immediately) - they have double donor program - it is not the leftover embryos from ivf cycles, but embryos created from young men and women. And the clinic is responding pretty fast - we has our orientation appt in 2 weeks after contacting them and sending our forms and then dr appt in another 3 weeks...

Wow.  I never knew they did this - created new embryos to donate - I can't imagine exactly why this would need to be done - why not use some of the many embryos that end up in the garbage because they were already created and are no longer needed by that couple/family?  And why not just use donor eggs then - the sperm isn't that hard to come by.  Hmmm, never imagined this.

Nice!  Great thing to do, snowmom!  Gives your embryos a chance at life with folks who really want them.  Nice all around!

I have an explanation why embryos from ivf are less popular than the newly created ones. Potentially, those ivf embryos are less viable - since people who go fro ivf have already fertility problems. Those embryos are from "older" population - mostly 30-35+ , but in DD program - both donors are under 30.
That clinic has an amazing success rate - more than donor eggs program.

And the last one - it is financially very attractive, especially if you qualify for their 100% refund program.

I'm fairly certain the wait times with the US places is a lot shorter than RFP will be.  I seem to recall it can take 2-3 years waiting for a match with RFP.

Couples who have frozen embryos after they have finished building their family have a very difficult time deciding what to do with those embryos.  They don't feel comfortable 'throwing them in the garbage', or having them used for research, and most are not comfortable with the idea of their potential children being raised in another family.  Many embryos get stored for many many years because couples cannot decide what to do.  Embryo donation is a relatively new concept and a difficult one for many to consider.  These embryos are not 'garbage' or 'leftovers'.  they were lovingly made and decisions around what to do with them when a family is complete are also lovingly made.

we are forever grateful for the couple who chose embryo donation because as a result we are parents to the most amazing baby boy.

snowmom - I think it is amazing that you are able to have an open relationship with the recipients of your donor embryos.  Our clinic's program is a closed program so we know very little about the donors in our case and they know nothing about us (they don't even know that we have our son).  We hope to be able to have at least some openness in the future.  We are sending a thank you card for them through the clinic in the hopes that they will be able to pass it on, if the couple is comfortable receiving it.

DAK - each clinic and each program is different.  wishing you lots of luck as you figure out your options

Sharlene, it is always the couples decision what to do with the embryos if they no longer want them. If the couple doesn't want to donate them then they don't have to.

Nervus brings up good points about the moral challenges on whether to throw embroys away, donate to science, donate to another couple or keep on ice due to no wanting to decide.

Our clinic thought we produced a lot of blasts, five blastocysts, and out of the five blastocysts only one has resulted in a pregnancy (20 weeks along). Most couples that do produce good blastocysts and embryos may never have the opportunity to donate. I would bet that most couples use most of their embryos to try to make one or two babies.

Overall, my hubby and I discussed what we would do with leftovers and it is a hard topic. We may embark on another IVF in the future and if we have leftover embryos/blastocysts then I would actually feel more comfortable donating them to science. I feel that if people before me had not donated embryos to science then people like me and lots of people on this forum may not have been able to get pregnant. Perhaps donating to science is a way to help thousands of people in the future. Donating embryos to a couple would be tough. Definitely noble, but not for everyone.

With regards to the original poster's question, RFP does have a donation program; however, I don't think lots of couples can even donate embryos. Last time I read RFP's site only couples that did IVF without ICSI were allowed to donate embryos. That eliminates a whole bunch of couples from donating embryos. I believe there is a higher risk of 'birth defects' albiet very small increase when ICSI is used compared to just IVF or natural conception.

See RFP's page regarding embryo donation.
