Hi there,

I had a hysterosonogram performed today that showed both of my tubes were blocked. :(

The doctor seems sure that this would be covered by OHIP.  It's all kind of surreal right now, but as I'm obsessively researching my options, I still can't find the answers to some questions so I'm hoping some of you on this forum can help me:

1.  To be covered by OHIP do I need to go through an HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) as well?  The doctor performing the test this morning told me no, but information on the internet is leading me to believe otherwise although the gov't website doesn't specifically mention that.  Has anyone been through this this where they had a hysterosonogram, then needed the results of a HSG to demonstrate blocked tubes to be covered by OHIP?

2.  Is there an OHIP approval process or is it automatic?  If so how long does it generally take?

Thanks so much in advanced for any information.....just trying to figure out how long this whole process will take.  I won't be meeting with my fert doctor until the end of the month to go over everything which seems so long....  :(

Here's what I found by searching:
http://www.health.go...s/ohip/ivf.aspx

If you're going to get a diagnosis outside of Que, which pays for everyone, this is one of the better diagnosis because the gov't will pay for the procedure. You still have to cover drugs. Here in Alberta we don't have any coverage at all so have to foot the whole bill ourselves.

Trying to conceive since our wedding day May 25, 2008.
Started Clomid Jan-April 2012.
Referred to RFP June 2012.
First consult at RFP November 2012.
First IVF cycle on antagonist protocol (GonalF, Luveris) January 2013.
Transferred two day-3 embryos, had severe OHSS, lost one twin between 7-13 weeks but was expecting one little one October 2013.
Found out at 6 mos that our little one had died weeks earlier and had to induce and deliver stillborn, July 25, 2013.
Something found on adrenal gland at follow up ultrasound, MRI showed what seems to be a benign tumor. Meeting with specialist Jan 8, 2014 - all fertility treatments on hold. :/
Tumour is definitely producing Aldosterone (causes high blood pressure) and Cortisol. Lucky me, only 34 similar cases recorded in the world! Tumour removed May 2014.
Approached about a possible adoption March 2014. Rush through all the paperwork and process.
Charlotte Evangeline born June 27, 2014. We brought her home on July 7 and held our breath for 10 days until she officially became ours.
Surprise BFP October 2014. Due to wonky cycles, ultrasounds convince Doctors I have a blighted ovum but detailed ultrasound reveals heartbeat at 6w3d. On progesterone support and waiting to see if pregnancy is still viable. Holding our breath again.

Oh and the wait may seem long but yours is rather short. We had to wait 3-4 months to see our fertility clinic for the first time and then had another 2 month wait for treatment to start cycling. IVF is a lot of waiting so definitely get used to that.

3-4 month wait!  Wow.  Waiting sucks, but I know it'll be worth it in the end.  Thanks for the response...i found the same link but it doesn't really provide much details  Hoping others that have gone through this with OHIP can provide some insight.

You'll want your doctor to refer you to one of the OHIP covered clinics in Ontario if this is the route you want to pursue.

For me, once that referral was made (after it was established that my tubes were bilaterally blocked) I didn't have to do any paperwork on my own in terms of the funding coverage.

Not sure where you are in Ontario... in Toronto, you'd have to go to Mount Sinai for fully funded IVF cycles. In Ottawa it's OFC. If I'm not mistaken, the other one is in London.

If you opt for a private clinic, you receive a discounted rate on IVF if your tubes are bilaterally blocked.

Even at funded clinics, you need to pay for all meds and you also pay for any frozen cycles if the fresh cycle isn't successful on your initial IVF (but I hope it will be!).

Get that referral ASAP so you can get the ball rolling.

Good luck!!

If at first - thanks for the information...It's good to know that I am already at one of OHIP covered clincs!  How did they establish that your tubes were blocked before you were approved for OHIP...did they need the results of an HSG (x-ray)?

I had an HSG. It showed that I had a hydrosalpinx on one side as well as a bilateral blockage. I chose to have the tubes removed prior to IVF to prevent the hydro from making a hostile environment for the embryo and also to cut down on my chances of further ectopic pregnancies.

Are you in Toronto? Glad to hear you are all set for success!! :)

Good afternoon. I'm in the same boat..this Monday I was told after my hsg that I am blocked in both tubes. This Friday I have an appt with my dr who did the hsg to discuss the laproscopy. As does most ppl in this boat I researched as well and came across the ohip funding...has anyone here actually been successful going through this instead of the surgery? & if so what was the time frame for this? I'm in ontario. Roughly 2 hours from Toronto. But 3 hours from ottawa. Thank you.
