Hi
I'm hoping someone can provide some advice on diet and ascites in OHSS.

I have a moderate to severe case of OHSS, got tapped/albumin etc yesterday. There were able to get some of the fluid but I still probably have a liter or two left. I'm feeling better in terms of nausea (it was horrendous!) but I am desperate for the third spacing to stop. Obviously we froze the embryos rather than transferring them.

I received advice from my clinic to eat a high sodium diet, but I am confused about this - I know it will draw some fluid intravascularly in the immediate but over time won't it just equilibrate and increase my total body sodium? I ask because I know with other cases of ascites (for instance with cirrhosis) patients are counseled a low sodium diet. I did a brief literature search and there doesn't seem to be much consensus but many sources say low sodium...

Arghhhh! Any thoughts?

Hi,

I'm sorry you have to deal with OHSS.

I only had a mild case of OHSS last year but my clinic also adviced to eat a high sodium diet and to drink lots and lots of fluid. Their first choice as far as drinks goes was Clomato juice.

Wishing you the best of luck!!!
