Has anyone had experience adopting in New Brunswick? (public)

We filled out the initial paperwork but were told it could be 8-10 years before we could adopt an infant (or if one is available). They also said it would be many years for a child and not to expect hearing from them for at least three years to begin processing our file :(

This is so disheartening :(

I have heard that the maritimes are more difficult in respect to the adoption process. If there is no one on this site able to share some personal experience try asking on canadaadopts.com lots of great people there willing to share their experiences as well and since it is an adoption focused forum you may find some more answers.

best of luck in your journey

Hi Happy wishes - we also had contacted the Social Development dept in NB, and were told the exact same thing. So we didn't even bother with the paperwork from them. We jumped right into International waters with Russia... We are about to start our Home Study and hopefully will get through that quickly before the Agency we've chosen to deal with Russia starts us on their paperwork.

Good Luck, and let me know if you wanna chat :)

I was wondering why you chose Russia, and what agency are you using?

Has the fact that Russia has banned adoptions from the U.S. affect Canadian adoptions at all? I sincerely hope not, and that you get to meet your future child as soon as possible!

Hi Bookworm - I hope not as well!!! As far as I can see... it could only help us be matched with a child sooner as the US had the highest amount of placements in the past couple of years with Russia.

I do feel horrible that there are 52 families, who have already met their future child, and the Russian/American Gov'ts are not allowing them to finalize their adoption. How heartbreaking for both the family and the Child.

want2bmamma - We chose Russia for a couple of reason, some are personal, some are logistics... We would have loved to do the China program, or even the Child in Waiting program, however there is quite a lengthy time frame on completing those adoptions, and personally, we don't have the time on our side to wait. Secondly, even tho Russia is slightly more expensive, I like the fact that you get to travel to meet the child before accepting or declining. We are using CHOC (Caring Homes for Orphan Children).

I hope it's okay if I pop in here. Erin know me from the International Thread. We are also adopting from Russia.

I just wanted to let everyone know that while we are not affected by the ban for the Americans, there is a similar Bill (Bill C-339) that a Private Member from the Quebec Liberals brought forth last year. It's not due to be discussed at the next sitting of Parliament (end of January). In fact, it likely would never be brought forward again. HOWEVER, many of us are very nervous right now as it is a matter than can be re=opened quickly, and we all know how much Harper likes to kiss up to the US.

For now, at least, we're in the clear.

Erin is in NB and I'm in Halifax. Were you asking me?

CHOC will send you a great info packet via email if you ask. It gives all kinds of detail on the process. It will give you a general fee idea as well. And they're cheaper than CHOICES.

Hi. Adoption in NB is time consuming and heartbreaking espically if you have to go with public adoption. My DH have done IVF & FET and our adoption by far was more difficult. However we did a private adoption which is the only reason we were able to adopt so quickly. It really takes 10 plus years to adopt an infant and the department of social development doesn't even look at your application beyond looking for an infant. When we did the pride course (mandatory or adoption/fostering) they didnt even want to answer my questions about infant, international or private adoptions. My advice tell everyone and anyone that will listen that you are looking to adopt - you never know who may know someone looking for a private adoption.

And also there is a infertility support group in fredericton - Pam burton from UNB runs it and has had quest speakers in to talk about adoption.
IVF #1 - Oct 2009 - BFP - MC @ 7 weeks
FET #1 - Feb 2010 - start superfact on Feb 13th - Estrogel Feb 19th
ET - March 9th 2010 - transfered two top quality blasts - BFN
IVF#2 - AART - retrieval November 11th -transfer November 16th
- December 2nd, 2010 Beta - 1165 - BFP
- December 21, 2010 ultrasound - two babies - identical twins!!!!!!!
- January 21. 2011 - 12 week ultrasound - two babies but no heartbeats :( totally unexpected and devastated!!
- January 21, 2011 - D&C
- Now we wait for pathology reports, more testing, more blood work before we figure out what to do next.
- April 2011 - PRIDE course to adopt or to foster - we are still waiting for results
-November 2011 - call about a private adoption
Feb 2012- two wonderful babies came home (ds-2yrs dd-17 months)
March 2012- dd born ( sibling to my other two children)
November 2012- adoption final. Instant family with three babies 3 and under!!!!!!
Jan 2014 - ready for our family to grow. Time will tell how that might happen. :)

Same thing here in Nova Scotia! We've been on the provincial adoption list for 2 years for a child under 5 and we've been told we have AT LEAST 6 years left to wait.

Be careful in the country you choose. Make sure North America isn't going to get involved and ban adoptions.

We have been on the waiting list for an infant for 2 years and on the list to adopt a child or sibling group between the ages of 2 and 10 for a year now. After our last failded IVF cycle we decided to proceed with international adoption. We begin our homestudy in a week and are focusing on Democratic Republic of Congo. Adoption in NB is definitly challenging and heartbreaking. It makes me sad when I hear how fast the process is in other provinces compared to ours. :-(

Thanks for the advice everyone.

I really don't even know where to start. I want to look into international adoption but from posts above I see that there are countries that Canada doesn't allow? (I think?).

Any guidance on where we should start for international adoption? Any advice on what to expect for fees?

As for private adoption, do we need to get in touch with an agency? How does this work?

Thanks!
