Today was my 19 weeks routine pregnancy ultrasound. I saw the tech wrote down choroid plexus cyst and I am terrified. I search the web and it can be associated with a higher risk of genetic abnormalities such as trisomy 18 or down syndrome. I am totally crushed. It is kind of a soft marker for these genetic abnormalities, and nothing else shows problem then thing may be ok.
However, on the 12th week NT scan the baby was not cooperating and moving too much and they could not do the neck measurements, so we never had any reinsurance that things are ok. I am also 37 and my DH just turned 40 last week, and his sperm has extreme low morphology like 1-2% normal and the rest had head damage, which maybe a sign of genetically abnormal DNA :(
We did IVF/ICSI which again increase the risk of genetic abnormalities.
Since there was no small nose etc, I am more afraid of trisomy 18. Trisomy 18 is usually effects girls, and the u/s tech told me this is most likely a girl as she didn't seen any male genitalias.
My pregnancy already not going well with all kinds of problem to me, but I never imagined to worry about my baby as well.
Half of the babies born with trisomy 18 do not even live one week. I havn't seen my o/b for 4 weeks. I supposed to get a call to tell me when to go next. Well, I called her office after the u/s , not mentioning the CPC, asking when is my next appointment. They called me back and gave me an appointment to tomorrow!!!. It frightens me. I was never ever was able to get to see my doctor without 2-4 weeks waiting.
I am almost 19 weeks along. We have 1 week to do an amino if we want to, but I do not want to because it has a risk of miscarriage.
I do not know what to do, everything seems so meaningless now.

Hi Ope,

So sorry to see that you are having another scare, you certainly are getting more than your fair share of them. Don't loose hope yet until you get more info. I found this info on line which states: More than 90% of choroid plexus cysts resolve spontaneously by 28th weeks' gestation . Once resolved, the cysts do not recur. http://answers.yahoo...13102920AAMYiju

I know I have seen a few ladies on here worrying about cysts on the brain in their ultrasounds and everything went fine and resolved on its own, however I don't know if they were the same kind of cyst. Hopefully someone with more experience with this will chime in soon and help reassure you.

Lisa

TTC #1: starting in Feb 2005 "unexplained" (immune issues, elevated NK cells, 2 heterozygous MTHFR and 2 heterozygous thrombophilias - Factor XIII and PAI-1 mutations)
me-42, DH-42, married since 1995!
Tried: Naturopath, Chinese herbs, Acupuncture, Homeopathy
4 un-medicated IUI's BFN
IVF # 1 18 eggs retrieved, 16 mature, 8 out of 16 fertilized (1/2 ICSI, half IVF), 5 made it to day 5 blast, transferred two, froze 3
first ever BFP m/c
FET #1 medicated, transferred two, started spotting 2 days later, full blown AF 5 days later (decided I don't react well to Estrace, will do natural frozen next time) BFN
FET #2 natural (but still with progesterone (crinone) support, transferred last blast from IVF #1 BFN
IVF #2 16 eggs retrieved, decided not to do ICSI this time since cycle #1 showed eggs could fertilize on their own, only 3 fertilized! None made it to blast for transfer no transfer! Disaster!
IVF #3 decided to add some repronex to the stims and do all ICSI. 18 eggs, 17 mature and 15 fertilized, 8 made it to day 5 blast. Transferred two blasts, froze 6 BFN
FET#3 added 3 HCG booster shots and doubled up on the crinone to prevent me from spotting early (as I often do), transferred 2 blasts, no spotting but a BFN anyway
FET #4- added ovidral just before my natural ovulation so they could pin point it more accurately with the 36 hour window, HCG shots again, plus double crinone BFN
January 2009 Consult with new RE in Markham - he finds a small septum, resected April 29, 09 - tells me to now try my last two frozen blasts
FET #5 - ET scheduled for June 15 (natural cycle with trigger, HCG booster and crinone) - BFN
On to Plan B- Switch clinic to Markham for
#4 Fresh IVF with IVIg, exploring immune testing - start BCP Sept 20. ER around week of Oct. 25
9 eggs retrieved, 1 immature, 1 fractured. 7 to work with. 4 out of 7 fertilized (Day 3: 1 8 cell grade 1, 2 8 cell grade 2 and 1 morula). Day 5 transferred 1 great blast and 1 morula (1 morula and 1 10 cell did not make it to freezing).
Beta Nov. 11 - BFP! (550) I am in shock!
Issues with spotting, Nov 20, second beta 11,000 and early ultrasound: saw gestational sac and yolk sac in the right place but concern about a cyst or possible ectopic near my ovary as well, 4 more ultrasounds over a 10 day period, last ultrasound on Dec. 2 'cyst' has not grown and baby measuring on target at 7wks, 1day with a heart beat of 153bpm.
Now taking Lovenox due to 2 heterozygous thrombophilias
Ultrasound on Dec. 18 (9 weeks, 5 days) baby on track, hb 167
Ultrasound on Dec. 22 due to extra heavy spotting, baby still measuring on track, hb 167 and dancing
Ultrasound on Jan. 8 (12 weeks, 5 days) baby on track, hb 160, baby doing crunches!
18 week anatomy scan scheduled for Feb. 16 - they lost my blood work for the second part of the IPS so no results for that today (they took blood again) but the 18 week scan went great, baby looked awesome and even gave us a little wave in between sucking her thumb and inspecting her toes. Yes, I said "her" - it's a little girl!
20 week ultrasound at Mt. Sinai and they agree, so far so good.
IPS results are in and they are excellent!
EDD: July 19, 2010
Baby girl arrived at 39 weeks, 2 days! July 14, 2010 3:12 am, weighing 7 pounds even.
May 2013 - The IVF Journey continues...one last try to see if a sibling is in the cards...
Did LIT, IVIg, Lovenox and low dose aspirin. 5 eggs retrieved, 1 immature, 1 fractured, 3 to work with, 2 fertilized with ICSI.
June 5, day 3 transfer of 2 8 cell grade 2 embryos.BFN
April 2014, one very last try - natural IVF with intralipids this time, 2! dominant follicles, 2 mature eggs retrieved, both fertilize with ICSI, day 3 transfer scheduled for April 13, transferred 1 8-cell grade one and 1 6-cell grade one (also using Lovenox and low dose ASA) -BFN, we are really done, not sure if it is now my immune system, or old eggs now too.

Ope, I'm so sorry this is happening to you. Your OB probably is able to get you in as he wants to talk to you about doing an amnio. It is the only way to know for sure but even if you opt for it you will not get the results for 2 weeks because they need time to grow the cells. We are getting an amnio done on Aug 22 and I met with my OB last Friday and he said that even though they give the statistic that there is a .5 % chance of m/s or 1 in 200, he said that there have been studies that the chance of m/c is really much lower than that. He said one study was 1 in 1600 and another was 1 in 800. So it is something to keep in mind if you really feel like you need to know what is going on in there. Again, I'm so sorry you are being stressed by this and I hope everything turns out normal and healthy.

Saffy.

One giant dermoid cyst removed in 2001 along with my right ovary and tube.
TTC since we got married March 2008.
Finally got DH to agree to IVF in the spring of 2010. Got accepted to VFC for IVF July 2010. Supposed to start IVF in August 2010
Battling cysts from August to January 2011delaying start of IVF. On BCP, off BCP - nothing worked.
High FSH on bw in Dec 2010 - Dr. H decided to do cyst aspiration. I bled all over the clinic causing a big emergency and had to be stitched up. Not pleasant
IVF #1 - Jan/Feb 2011- Out of the 5 follicles only one egg was retreived. We got the call that it was abnormal and didn't fertilize on February 7, 2011.
Dr. H not recommending we do another IVF unless we consider donor eggs. I still tear up thinking of this conversation.
Feb 8, 2011 - a friend hears of my predicament and offers to be our egg donor.
Trying to link our cycles and the cysts return and need to be dealt with. Three months of lupron depot shots to put me in temporary menopause.
DE cycle #1 July/Aug 2011- Chemical - beta 10. Nothing to freeze
Wonderful friend is willing to do another cycle with a natural start.
DE cycle #2 September 2011 - 11 eggs collected, 7 day 3 embryos frozen. We decided to collect and do only FET because of my cyst problem and the difficulty in coordinating cycles.
FET #1- Dec 2011- everything is prefect - great looking lining, wonderful looking embryos- BFN
So sad. Decided to take a break until at least May/June while we move and settle into our new house
May 18, 2012 - missed AF - Surprise natural BFP! Is this even possible?
Beta # 1 - 1089 - approx 16 DPO- May 18,Beta #2- 5710 - May 22, Beta #3- 9767- May 24
June 6 - 7 wk u/s at VFC- It all looks good, measuring 7w, 1d and heartbeat approx 160. June 15- 8.5 w u/s at VFC - still looking good.
August 22 - Amnio, Sept 12 - Amnio results came back normal. We are having a girl! EDD- Jan 22, 2013
Baby girl born via c-section Jan 21, 2013. Our 6 lb 15 oz miracle is here!

Just wanted to share that during my son's g/f ultrasound at roughly 16 wks, they found what the tech thought was a choroid cyst. They booked her in for a 3D ultrasound. As it turns out, all was well. Just an blip on the u/s. So I know it is a worry, try not to. At least until you have more info.

Sending thoughts and prayers your way.

choroid cysts are extremely common. My gf had one on her u/s and no other genetic markers, was told it usually is perfectly normal (like 95% of u/s's with them are normal) and she didnt even get an amnio.
also low sperm morphology does NOT increase genetic problems at all, this was verified by our RE. We had a healthy girl and my DH has low morph.
ICSI/IVf does not increase downs or trisomy, it has a slightly increased chance (1%) of Klenfields (sp?) syndrome, which affects male babies only and has passed on infertility ect...

hope this helps

I understand your worry, but im sure your ob will put your mind at ease

I will be thinking of you Ope. I know soft markers can be scary, but I know most of the time they cause unnecessary worry. Also, I know a lot of cysts are misdiagnosed. And those cysts and others are common in healthy pregnancies. I know it doesn't help too much to ease your mind, but I hope you doctor can give you more info. If you need to get a second opinion. Thanks ladies for your concern. It seems that I worried for nothing. ( Or I have an ignorant Dr). I met with my Dr today, and first she didn't even mentioned the cyst.Since she said nothing, I asked and only then she told me about the cyst on the u/s. She said that my quad? blood test come back with a risk for trisomy 18 only 1:40,000 even with the new information the risk is negligible in the absence of any other sign. She said a brain cyst like this would make double or triple the chance ,but since my blood test showed such a low risk, there is nothing to worry about. She didn't suggested or offered or even mentioned neither genetic counselling neither amnio and not even the level 2 u/s. I was really relived when I come out from her office. When I called dh and told him, he kind of revived my worries by saying that he hopes it is really nothing and not just an ignorant Dr.
My next appointment is in 5 weeks and I have no test until then.

Jazmine: hmm, maybe I should chill before I give into my shopping fever. I saved all DS clothes, and the new baby will born in the same season. If it is a boy, I really do not need to buy anything except a new mattress. On the other hand, if it a girl, I need to buy clothes, as I won't getting any gifts/hand me downs. We already started to discuss girls names yesterday, but maybe it is too soon.

That is excellent news!

I guess we are in the minority, but I have a couple friends the same thing happened to, so it makes me wonder. I bought a bunch of girl things after my anatomy scan. My mom went nuts and some sale items she couldn't return. I would suggest buying from places where you know they will take returns. I know Bonnie Togs will take returns back after like a year or something crazy like that.
