Who is a good IVF doctor in Toronto
Posted 25 July 2012 - 01:16 PM
First time on this site and we are looking for some information. I have also posted this question on the over 35 years old section since my wife is 39yrs old.
We are trying to find a good IVF doctor in Toronto. My wife has been on clomid for 3 tries and was not successful. We also do not like our present doctor. We now want to try IVF, but not sure who to use. We have read about Dr. Hannam and Dr. Virro. These two doctors seem to have good reviews on rate your MD and other websites.
This whole process feels very shady and we just want to find a doctor that we feel will get the best results. At the end of the day, the IVF cost are high, so we would at least not want to second guess ourselves by thinking we wasted all the money on the wrong doctor.
We would appreciate and feedback. Thanks

me: annovulation, poor egg quality, immune issues
Our Journey ttc#1:
Dec./07 - officially start ttc (naively think it will happen quickly and easily!)...discover it's hard to do when af NEVER arrives after discontinuing bcps
Apr./08 - GP prescribes provera in the hopes that it will help regulate me and bring on af...no such luck.
June/08 - GP finally refers me to ob-gyn
Aug/08 - ob-gyn suggests unmonitored clomid cycle #1
Sept/08 - unmonitored clomid cycle #2
Sept/08 - finally referred to an fs
Nov/08 - clomid + IUI#1 = BFN
Dec/08 - Gonal-f + IUI#2 = BFN
Jan/09 - clomid + IUI #3 = BFN
Feb/09 - IVF #1: BCPs, Lupron, mostly Gonal-F with a little Menopur; 15 eggs retrieved, only 6 mature and only 2 fertilize (devastated!!); Day 3 transfer of 2 embies (8 cell and 4 cell)...BFN
Mar/09 - fed up with current fs and clinic...need a change and new opinion
Apr/09 - appt with new fs (Hallelujah!) who schedules surgery to investigate my uterus
June/09 - Surgery: Laporoscopy, Hysteroscopy, Resection of Uterine Septum (determined that septum was covering HALF of my uterus)
Sept/09 - IVF #2 with a new protocol: BCPs, Repronex, Puregon, Orgalutron; 13 eggs retrieved, only 2 mature, ZERO fertilize, NO transfer!...HORROR! SHOCK! (couldn't believe results could be worse than last pathetic cycle!)
Nov/09 - IVF #3 (Got to keep trying! No way I'm giving up): Brand new protocol again...BCPs, ALL Menopur (higher doses); 16 eggs retrieved, 9 mature, 6 fertilize (yay! What an improvement!); day 3 - IVIg treatment, all 6 embies are continuing to develop; Day 5 transfer of 1 blastocyst and 1 morula (other embies didn't make it to freezing)
Dec. 3/09 - Beta #1 : BFP! Beta: 929!! (twins?) Thank you, thank you!!!!!
Dec. 28/09 - 8 week viability u/s and all is well! ONE perfect, strong heartbeat (170) and babe measuring on track (phew!)
Jan. 27/10 - u/s: babe measuring 12 weeks and 4 days, Heartbeat - 165. So far so perfect!
Mar. 5/10 - 18 week u/s and appt.: Great u/s again (phew!)...Babe very active and measuring on track, Heartbeat - 162
Apr. 1/10 - 22 week appt.
EDD - Aug. 10/10 - CAN'T WAIT!!!
July/11 - IVF #1: Crappiest cycle yet...Cycle cancelled a day before scheduled retrieval :-(
Sept/11 - IVF #2: 16 eggs retrieved, 8 mature, 6 fertilize; Day 3 Report- Lousy embryo update: embies are only 4 and 6 cells and quite fragmented; Day 5 - better news! Transferred 2 'early' blasts (average or lower quality)...other embies (all morulas) didn't make it to freezing :-(
Oct 3/11 - Beta...BFN :-( (but no surprise...af showed her ugly face 2 days before beta)
Nov/11 - IVF #3 (hoping 3rd time's the charm again!): 16 eggs retrieved, 2 fractured, 7 mature, 5 fertilize; Day 3 Report: All eggs progressed, but only one is 8 cells...Others are 4 cell and even one itty, bitty 2 cell (all "average" quality/grade 3). Day 5 transfer of one nice (nearly a '3') blast! Other embies were crap and had barely changed since day 3. GROW EMBIE GROW!!!
Nov. 28/11 - Beta #1:76 ("positive" but "on the low side")
Nov. 30/11 - Beta #2:114 (crap - didn't double...too low...)
Dec. 2/11 - Beta #3: 176
Dec. 5/11 - Beta #4: 399
Dec. 7/11 - Beta #5: 742
Dec. 9/11 - Beta #6: 1086...u/s scheduled for Dec. 12 due to "inappropriate beta values"...99% not a viable pregnancy :-(
Dec. 12/11 - Beta #7:1938...u/s inconclusive...showed what looked like a very small gestational sac...
Dec. 14/11 - Beta #8: 3043
Dec. 16/11 - Beta #9:3890
Dec. 19/11 - u/s #10: 6760...u/s showed same small sac, but no yolk sac/hb etc...not a viable pregnancy :-(
Dec. 20/11, Dec. 23/11, Dec 28/11 - using Cytotec/Misoprostol to induce m/c (3 separate attempts...hopefully it'll work!)
Jan. 4/12 - u/s confirmed I don't need a d&c; beta: 48
Mar. 8/12 - appt with Dr V...Discussed immune treatments required (LIT, IVIg, Lovenox)...Decided to wait for Dr V to offer LIT before starting next cycle
June-July/12 - LIT #1 and #2
Aug/12 - IVF #4: 14 eggs retrieved, 13 mature, 8 fertilize (best fertilization report ever! PRAY the good news will continue...Grow embies grow!!): Day 3 Report (Still hopeful - phew!): 2 4-cell, gr.3; 2 6-cell (gr.1 and gr.3); 4 8-cell (gr.2, gr.2, gr.2, gr.3); Day 5 update/ET: embies went downhill :-( Transferred an early blast and a morula II...Trying to hold on to some hope....FX
Sept. 5/12 - Surprising and wonderful news: a day 5 morula lll progressed to a 4BB and can be frozen - wow! yay! (my FIRST ever frostie!)
Sept. 13/12 - af...Crap...Game over again :-(
Sept.14/12 - Beta: 15 (are you kidding me??)
Sept.17/12 - Beta: 4 (at least things didn't drag on like they did last time...)
Oct/12 - LIT #3
Oct/12 - IVF #5: tried new protocol...nearly cancelled cycle due to very low (and sometimes declining) E2, few follicles of appropriate size and very thin lining. Went ahead with ER anyway: 6 eggs, 4 mature, 4 fertilize; Day 3 report: 2 4-cell, gr 3, 1 6-cell gr 3, 1 8-cell gr 1 (my best ever); Day 5 update: SO disappointing - my day 3 'beauty' only progressed to a morula II today...it will be watched; Day 6 update: Morula progressed to a blast but no inner cells...Not freezable :-( .
Feb./13 - FET...cancelled due to thinning lining :-(
Mar/13 - FET attempt #2 - Cancelled again due to crappy lining. Losing hope and strength :-(
Apr/13 - IVF #6: 12 eggs retrieved, 10 mature, 9 fertilize (most I've ever had fert., but I know quality is my problem - not quantity!); Day 3 report: 3 4 cell,gr.3, 3 6 cell (gr.2, gr.2, gr.3), 3 8 cell (gr.1, gr.2, gr.2); Day 5 report: Embies went waaaay south and 'best' was morula 111 :-( WTF? Thawed and transferred frozen 4bb instead. FX!!! Maybe my last attempt...
Apr 29/13 - Beta: PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE!!!!!!
We welcomed our precious and perfect baby boy into the world on July 28, 2010 at 5:07 a.m. (at 38 weeks, 4 days). Mommy and Daddy instantly fell in love with their 6 lb, 14 oz. miracle!

Welcome to the IVF process. I hope you can find a great doctor and clinic in Toronto that you feel comfortable with. We went to TCART for our first IVF before we moved out west. I can't say much bad or good about the clinic therefore I would say there are better ones out there. Good luck!
