My son is 15 months old. On Saturday he got a fever, which we treated with Tylenol. On Sunday upon waking up he was ok, but a couple of hours later fever returned. It was 102. I gave him Tylenol and he went down for a nap. After he got up from his nap I was feeding him and he was not interested in table food, so I gave him some milk. He dranked the milk, but right after vomited and 15 minutes later vomited again. After a bit we gave him some pedillite and he was ok, was happy and playing. About an hour later he started crying and was a bit warm again. I was lying on the bed holding him and he seemed like he wanted to sleep and a few mins later his body started jerking so I turned him over to look at him and his eyes were open, but moving towards the back of his head and he was blue in his face and the bosy jerking continued. I told my husband he's having a seizure and I gave Jaydan to my hubby and grabbed the phone and called 911. The body jerking lasted for about 20 minutes. Stopped just a minute before ambulance arrived. His was not moving face still blue and eyes closed, but breathing. They undressed him and started an IV and gave him some Tylenol and took him to hospital. At ER he was zoned out, his eyes only focused in one direction and was not responding to our voices or anything. His fever was 104.7. At this time it has been atleast an hour since all of this started. Dr gavehim meds and about 15 minutes later his face and eyes back to normal. They did a CT scan, drew fluid from his spine, urine analysis and bunch of blood tests. All the tests came back normal, but they still said they wanted him to stay in the hospital overnight in case the seizure happens again or anything else as he seized for longer than normal. I stayed with him at the hosp all night holding him. Was afraid to even close my eyes although he was hooked up to monitors and had a nurse check on him every hour. He's following up with his dr tomorrow and is also being referred to a neurologist for further test and possibly being able to tell us if this is going to happen again. Sorry for the long post. Has anyone's child had a seizure around this age? Do you know why and did it repeat itself? I am afraid to let Jaydan sleep in his own room now for the fear of the seizure coming on and god forbid something happens unimaginable.

Thank you,
Dana

So incredibly scary Dana. I have known a number of children who have had seizures due to high fevers, but none that have lasted as long as his. Hopefully you will get some answers and there will be no long term worries.

My nephew had seizures - I remember he was probably about that same age - they never did figure out what caused it and it did happen a few times - they ended up attributing it being febrile seizures that sometimes happen in kids - they didn't continue into adulthood (he is now 25) - and all is quite normal now.

I'm not doubting you exactly - but is it possible the seizing lasted for less than 20 minutes - I just know that watching a child in a full blown seizure for even 5 minutes can feel like an hour so it may have been shorter - unless you noticed the clock when it started and stopped.

I hope they either figure out what caused it and fix it quickly and easily or can at least tell you it shouldn't happen again. I feel for you - feeling like you need to watch him like a hawk - and although you likely won't be able to relax, the fact is that seizures don't usually cause permanent damage - and the person experiencing the seizure doesn't remember it - they are usually just super exhaused from it and want to sleep it off afterwards (I actually had a seizure once from a particular medication and remember the moments just before and coming out of it, but not the actual seizure - I was with my cousin who gave me the details later. But all that jerking does cause incredible exhaustion, like I never felt before.)

If his fever is gone, and it is a febrile seizure (which they probably haven't said for certain yet), he will probably be just fine. I hope you get answers soon for your peace of mind.

Baby2BE, I know EXACTLY what you went through! My daughter, when 16 months, went through 2 seizures in 24 hours, then one separately a week later. IT WAS THE SCARIEST THING of my life! WE thought she was dead, as my husband carried her up and down the stairs in a complete panic, thinking she had died...eyes rolling back, turned blue, shaking..OMG!
It was definitely a febral seizure, from fever jumping from one extreme to other. We ended up ambulance one time and the others we just drove her to hosptal. It lasted 3 min each time, which seems like 15 minutes!
When they are that little, their little brains can't handle the quick change in temperature in effect, shut down and seize. I partially blame the tylenol since it artificially lowered it, just to wear off and jump high within 30 minutes.
I know what you are talking about, it was SO @#(*@( scary. If a feibral seizure, lots of times their body/brain learns how to deal as they get older and hopefully no more seizures, but if prone to them they can continue throughout childhood, just less likely after age 3.
Luckily after the 3, my daughter has had no more of them.
There is a medicine they can give you to put in their rectum if they seize again to help stop it immediately, luckily we didn't have to go that route since they have stopped.

I know the culprit was a bad case of hand/foot/mouth she had last spring. SO very scary. Hope you don't have to experience it again. Wow..that brings back bad memories. It is "SORT" of common in some children. My daughter seems to still be developing normally after, but not like her sister. I know, yhou shouldn't compare, but you will always wonder if it affects them as they get older.

Thanks Danielle for your support!

Sharlene, I'm glad to hear that you cousin had them and is a normal adult now.

I didn't look at the clock, but the phone has the time of my 911 call. So it was for just about 20 minutes. We live in the county, which is probably consider country and it takes the medical services a bit to come out there. The way he was at ER they said he was still seizing and it was not normal. He didn't get back to himself until he was given an injection of some meds, but I don't remember the name. Given all the info to ER dr he determined that my son was seizing for an hour at least. Yes, high fever can cause a seizure they told me, but they also said it does not last that long and the child doesn't zone out like my son did. The ER doctor told me that it can cause brain damage if a child is seizing for a long period like Jaydan did. It's over now he is ok, but it still worries me. I'm hoping that the neurologist can give us some answers.

Thank you Heres2hoping! I am so sorry you and your family had to go through that as well. It is super scary. I am glad your daughter is developing normally now.

They told us about febrile fever, but are saying his is most likely not from a fever that's why they're sending him to a neurologist. I just hope there are no reoccurrences. I probably would have had a heart attack if my hubby was not home. He's leaving this weekend on a business trip and I'm just worrying how things will go here at home. I know I probably sound crazy, but I'd rather be sick or anything else than one of my kids.

Gosh - I'm glad the hospital was able to get it to stop and bring Jaydan back to normal. Scary is probably a huge understatement. Can hubby postpone the trip until you get answers from a neurologist? (wishful thinking on my part probably, but I wouldn't want to be alone if it happened again, although it probably won't)

I sure hope you get answers soon - I know how you feel - I'd much rather something goes on with me and doesn't hurt my little Jonah - he got a handful of splinters recently and I felt so bad for him and just wished I got them instead (cause I told him to hold on to the handrail when walking up the steps, little did I know the wood was bad!). No comparison to a seizure - but you just don't want your little one in harm's way. I hope he's okay.

I am sorry you and your baby son had to go through this. My daughter had an episode like that at about 14 months of age. Same thing happened, we called ambulance, she had stopped the first seizure and started the next just as they arrived. She was checked out at the ER but they did not have any concerns re neurological problems and said it was a febrile seizure. The way we could manage this next time she was at a risk of it occurring was not to let her fever spike. It was the change from chills to very high fever that caused it. So, since then, whenever she is getting chills, we cover her lightly so she does not get too cold from the chills and does not have to heat up to compensate. Then, as soon as the chills are over, I put her in a lukewarm bath and literally get her wet all over, hair included. That's the best cool down technique as it covers the biggest areas of the body. We also give Tylenol and alternate with Advil, but if it's really bad, you can give them together (which is what they did at the ER). She never had a seizure again and is a very advanced 3 year old.

Oh man! I hope little Jayden checks out OK! It's good to be very thorough in these situations. It sounds like you have a great doctor!
I just know it must rate as one of the scariest kid things you will ever witness. Not cool at ALL.

My friends son used to do the same thing...the seizures were febrile seizures. I agree 20 min is a long seizure. Sounds like you are in very good hands with the Dr's and they are doing tests to find out what caused it. I HOPE this was a febrile seizure and it doesn't happen again. A tip for you....if your son getsa fever again give him a tepid bath with tylenol & advil, you can alternate b/w advil & tylenol to bring down a fever. Even a cool face cloth to his face, or a popsicle to suck on, keep him out of the heat during the hottest time of day (usually 12-3) when my kids were little that was the time of day we would come inside and have quiet time since the yard can get quite hot during summer. Sorry you had to go through thatPosted Image
