Hi, ladies

I heard that it's recommended to sleep on the left side during pregnancy, especially after 12 weeks for better blood flow to the uterus and baby. Usually, i sleep on my back and for few days I am trying to sleep on my left side, but I change the position few times per night. Also, I have a back pain in the morning and I think it's because I am not supporting my back. I am thinking to just have a pillow just behind my back to make it more comfortable, but I am not sure that this will help. I know that there is pregnancy pillows in the stores, but I am not sure that they are helpful, too. Do you sleep on the left side, too? How do you, ladies, keep this sleeping position whole night? Thanks

Hi Dream.
I used to be a left side sleeper before I got pregnant. Then during OHSS, I had to sleep propped up with pillows. Now, I am constantly having to change positions all night long. I lie on both sides and then prop myself up with pillows so I can be on my back (angled). No position is comfortable to me for long. A friend is loaning me her pregnancy pillow and it doesn't help me much either. Your body will wake you up so that you can shift if there is an issue.

Oh and my OB said I could sleep on my back until I got to 30 weeks because before then the baby isn't big enough to press on the vein. After 30 weeks, the uterus and baby gets heavy so you aren't suppose to anymore.

I was told left is best, because it

helps your kidneys efficiently eliminate waste products and fluids from your body and promotes good circulation. Unfortunately, I can't stay in one position;

I cramp up so I switch to my right side. During my first trimester I started to "train" myself to sleep on my left. As you baby gets bigger laying on your back can put pressure on your back and negatively impact your blood flow circulation. My hips really hurt during my second trimester and a body pillow REALLY helped me. I wrapped my legs around my body pillow and would sometimes put a pillow behind my back for support.

Congratulations on your pregnancy and all the best!

I am wondering the same thing. I usually flip because I have neck pain, but the other night while trying to lay on my left my ovary was in horrible pain. It would wake me up every time I flipped to my left. Last night I had no problem. Weird. I was wondering if a pregnancy pillow could help take the pressure off my ovary or could it make it worse?

I am a back sleeper too! And I sleep upright (angled) with a lot of pillows. I find that the pregancy pillows really don't work for me - and i refuse to spend the money. I have about 9 pillows in my bed and at times I just don't sleep.

Last night I went to the couch with a 'few' of my pillows and slept for 4 hours straight - that was like heaven!!!!

I don't think there is a comfortable position for sleeping while pregnant.....what works for 1 night may not work the next night.......

Here's to getting some ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ's.

I worried about the best position and not sleeping on my back since I was a back sleeper before I was pregnant. When I was in early pregnancy I kept waking up on my back despite going to sleep on my sides. Eventually, I stopped doing that in my sleep because it was no longer comfortable. I asked my doctor about it and she said it was really only a concern after like 20 weeks and that if I woke up on my back, just roll over. It's not really as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be. I also don't think it's that you're supposed to only sleep on one side because that doesn't sound that great either, but I guess you're supposed to try and spend more time on your left? I don't know. Eventually, when it's really an issue, you'll hardly be sleeping at all anyway!

I swear by my Snoogle pregnancy pillow, though I know others who haven't found that it helps them. I had back pain starting at 12ish weeks and that allowed me to sleep as comfortably as possible for the rest of the pregnancy. If my back was particularly sore, I'd go lay down with Snoogle for a few minutes and all would be well. They're expensive, but they do go on sale for 40% off fairly regularly at Babies R Us.

See About Me for full info.

I slept on my right side throughout my whole pregnancy because I had heartburn so bad that I would gurgle on my left chronically. It kept me awake if the indigestion & heartburn weren't bad enough to do it on their own. Sometimes I slept slightly propped up. My OB didn't seem too terribly concerned that I make myself sleep on my left if it was that uncomfortable for me.

I used one of those pillows for support & loved it. DH not so much, hard to cuddle with a pillow between you both!

I was a stomach sleeper before I got pregnant. It took me a long time to train myself to sleep on my left comfortably but I got there.
I bought the snoogle and an angled pillow but I found them very akward. I actually fell out of bed trying to get out the snoogle to pee so that was the end of that..
I ended up folding a baby blanket we already had and tucking it between my legs and under my bump. It worked for me and was free.
As for sleeping on yr back, as everyone said its not ideal for the reasons they described. If it happens don't panic- my OB told me your body would very likely wake you up before you could ever put enough pressure to restrict blood flow/pressure to hurt your baby. By the time your that big you probably won't be able to get much sleep anyways. ;)

thanks, ladies

For the last 2 nights I have a progress sleeping on my left side, but sometimes I wake up on my back. Then, I switch again to the left side and sometimes change it for the right side just for 5-10min. I am using a support for my back when i am sleeping on the left and it's really helpful for me as I don't have back pains now.

I also loved my Snoogle. You can use it lots of different ways. The first position I tried I didn't like. I ended up putting the less curved end under my head for pillow, then run it along my back for support them pulling the big curved end between my knees and tucking the end under my belly. When I was on hospital bedrest for 6 weeks before DS was born the nurses and doctors said to sleep how comfortable but to avoid being on stomach and if going to be on back to try to not be flat on back and either prop head up or put a pillow under right hip so you roll onto left side a bit. Spending hours on fetal monitors or having trasounds I ended up being on my back a lot and would prop myself so wouldn't be right on back.

It is actually quite noticeable the difference it makes when on fetal monitor in baby's heart rate when you ate flat on your back do it definately is better for circulation to not be.

I have found that sleep can sometimes be hard too. I ended up getting a Snoogle pillow and it helped enormously. BUT...there still are some nights that I just can't get comfortable and my side goes numb. I think that this has more to do with the position of the baby as it doesn't happen all the time. During those nights I find I have to get up and sit upright on the sofa with my feet up. DH and I just bought a rocker/recliner from Lazyboy which will be delivered soon! I figure that this will be a great chair to use with the baby but also right NOW as sleep doesn't always come easily! In a recliner I can tilt back a bit without going all the way AND I can put my feet up! :)

Me: 40
Dx: DH: Vasectomy; need IVF/ICSI ME: D.O.R. and many immunological issues. (Initially presented as "normal" but issues were only discovered after IVF attempt #2 and #3 after testing at new clinic)
IVF attempt #1 Nov.2009, Age 37: Long "Lupron" protocol
Dec.2009: Cycle cancelled due to oversuppression
IVF attempt #2, Age 38: April 2010: 3 eggs retrieved, 2 mature, 2 fertilized, ET of 2 embryos BFN
IVF atempt #3 at new clinic: November 2010, Age 38: 5 eggs retrieved, 4 mature, 4 fertilized, ET of 2 blastocysts BFP
Strong beta numbers but babies not measuring on track but one heartbeat is present. Followup u/s reveals no HB's :( Had D&C--so sad.
Moved to new clinic closer to home + more of a focus on testing for potential immunological factors:
Further testing reveals three mutations related to inherited thrombophilia (2 MTHFR mutations and PA1-1 mutation), positive ANA, elevated NK cells and cytokines and low levels of leukocyte antibodies (LADS), Recommended Immunological treatment: Humira, LIT, IVig and blood thinners if PG
IVF Protocol: Low stim for me/ TESE needed for DH; took Humira in late August and early September; taking DHEA plus Co-Enzyme Q10, vitamins for DH just for good measure! September--two trips to Mexico for LIT treatment, treatments 3 weeks apart
Initial re-testing through Alan Beer Centre after some of the immune treatments reveals only cytokines were lowered, NKs still high and LAD numbers still low. Another LIT in Mexico is recommended. We decide to begin cycle on doctor's recommendation of just doing IVIG.
IVF#4, Age 39 : November 2011: Worst AFC EVER--a whopping 4! Three follicles responded, two eggs were retrieved. Three day transfer of two Grade 1 8 cell embryos: "Fahita" & "Burrito" Stick, stick, stick little ones!
BFP! Beta of 569
Viability u/s at 6 w 2d shows TWO babies measuring on track with heartbeats of 121. Looks like babies might be sharing the same amniotic sac.
Second u/s at 7w 2 d shows ONE baby with hb of 150, measuring 7 w 3 days. No sign of twin. Vanishing twin syndrome?
Third u/s at 8 w 2d shows ONE baby with hb of 170, measuring 8 w 3 days. Looks like a little jellybean!
12 week u/s at 12 w 2 days and baby is measuring 12 w 5 days with a heart beat of 150. Baby mooned us and waved at us with one hand....looked like a "royal" wave to me!
13 week doctor's appointment, HB=155 on doppler
14 week u/s to check cervix, HB=148
16 week u/s to check cervix, HB=138, baby had hiccups!
20 week u/s--everything looks good! HB=130, looks like we're having a GIRL!
IPS results very good!
39 weeks: Our baby girl arrived!!! She is healthy and beautiful! We are so happy! :)
