Anyone have any insight into egg retrieval pain? I'm really worried about getting it done — so much so that I'm looking for a clinic that does it under anesthesia. My Ottawa doctor said women with problems during the water test, like me, may have a tougher time with egg retrieval. Apparently IVF Canada in Toronto does it. Anyone know of any other places?

No insight on what clinics offer sedation, but fwiw I had a terrible time with HSG, and found ER very managable. My clinic uses twilight sedation. Could you request Ativan beforehand..Good luck you will do great, and its over pretty quick!

I just had my 4th IVF and ER are always superpainful... OFC tried something differently with pain meds and it didn't work well...still painful, but I was completely out of it... honestly it's not worth g. oing elsewhere to find general anthestic. The pain is short lived... max 20 min... I would think you'd cope.

Not to terrify you but each of my ER were over an hour, and every single stab hurt so much I screamed. But I have severe endo, lots of scar tissue, And therefore it was more painful(I think).

Diagnosed with endometrosis at age 19

5 pelvic surgeries

2 IVF, numerous FETs

2 different gestational carriers

Now mother of 2 year old twins.

For me, the HSG was far more painful than the ER. I had a painful SHG (that lovely saline examination) once, but was told that pain can arise as a result of air being getting pumped through the line and into the patient before the saline solution is introduced into the patient. (I know I'm not explaining it properly. Argh.)

They use "twilight sedation" at LifeQuest, so you're kinda half in & half out.

Dr. Hannam has a very good touch.

SIRM (Las Vegas) completely sedates their patients (rather, that's what Dr. Sher does) but I found I was in more discomfort after being knocked out compared to being partially sedated.

For me the gas and constipation afterwards was more of a challenge than the actual ER. That was my issue moreso than retrieval itself.

Regardless of whether you're completely under or not, nothing begins until some anaesthetic is administered first.

FX, you'll make it. You can do it.

My clinic used "twilight sedation" on my first IVF... They didn't give me too much meds in the beginning because they were afraid i cannot take it. So when my RE started the procedure i was still awake. I could feel when he first poked me when the tool... it was really painful and then i screamed... then the nurse gave me double the amount of medication... then i was out and didn't remember anything after until they woke me up. But i was vomiting a lot after due to the meds.

My advice is to make sure that the nurse gives you enough meds before your RE comes in to do the procedure.
