When we sent in our taxes for 2010, I included a spreadsheet outlining all of the appointment dates for which we were required to travel to the fertility clinic and claimed the mileage, accommodation, and meals for each date according to their formula. I also included all of the fertility clinic fees, medication costs, acupuncture, counseling, and naturopathic fees that were not covered by my extended health plan. We also threw in DH's laser eye surgery and some dental work.

A few months later, they did ask for the original receipts, and reviewed the claim. I got a letter yesterday saying that it was all approved except for the counseling fees. I was actually surprised it was that easy to deal with CRA.

Lesson -it really pays to be organized with your claim and all of your receipts. If you live more than 80 km's from your clinic, keep a little log of the dates of your trips and how far you had to drive. You don't need to keep all of your receipts for meals, they have a daily amount for those. We claimed one meal for each of us for every day trip and 3 meals per day per person if we needed to stay overnight. Hotel accommodations and all of the clinic & medication fees you will require receipts for.

We'll be doing the same thing when we file for 2011.

And my own piece of advice to go along with this (which is exactly what I do, lol)... actually send in your medical receipts with your taxes. We were told the first year that we had medical receipts that we didn't need to submit them unless we were asked to and for 2009's taxes we were contacted to provide them; however, this year (2010) we weren't asked for them but instead we got a letter stating that because we didn't provide receipts for medical, we owed them money back.. no request had come through prior to that letter for the receipts like it had in 2009 so it's obvious that it depends on who's doing the reassessing at CRA, whether they ask for the receipts or not. I'm just going to provide the receipts from now on with the taxes so we don't have to go through that stress again.

Laura, I agree about sending in originals to the govt but because I have to send the originals to my husband's benefit plan, I just keep copies of everything attached to the benefit statements, so CRA doesn't get originals either and they were fine with that (I guess cuz I had included the benefit statements of what was and wasn't covered). I do keep track of everything on a spread sheet tho and I sent a copy of that with the receipts, which I'm sure the people at CRA are thankful for. The one for 2009's tax year came back with check marks all over it so obviously they used it!

Hello Rainbow

Thanks

I got everything back I sent in, at least I think I did. I keep it all in an envelope with my spreadsheet and the sheets from our benefits but I didn't look through it specifically to see if every single thing was there. I didn't have very many originals tho, if any, because I had to send them to my insurance company first. I photocopy every receipt and keep it with the benefit statement but I got all that back (as far as I know). That's all I can comment on because I don't send in originals. If you're at all concerned, just photocopy everything and keep the copies... if someone wants the originals later, just tell them that you sent them in but you can provide a copy. I don't know if CRA will accept that... they didn't have problems with my photocopies but again, I had benefit statements that went with them. I do know that I've had to resubmit to my insurance a time or two and could only provide copies which they were fine with. If you keep a spreadsheet, you can always ask whatever business it is to issue you a copy. Sorry it's not a quick answer... my situation is a bit different because I have to submit everything to benefits first, even those things I know aren't covered, as proof to CRA that my benefits don't cover certain things. Hope that helps!

I sent originals when they were requested, but kept scanned copies of everything. I only had extended health coverage for birth control pills and some of the acupuncture, so didn't send the receipts for what was covered already by that. The letter I got yesterday said CRA would be returning all of my original receipts.

I sent in copies of all receipts with my returns the 2 years that we claimed IVF expenses. It just seemed obvious that they would want to see receipts for over $15,000 of expenses and we had no issues. I also sent in the summary of claims to our supplementary insurance and a spreadsheet I had made. I think making it easier for the CRA expedites the refund Posted Image

All medical expenses are tax deductible - not just fertility related!! The catch is most of us don't have enough in any given year to make it past the minimum annual amount unless we have a large expense like IVF.

If you do break that barrier (around $2000), you can then claim every medical expense you and your family have (one person claims all expenses for the family) including health insurance premiums, dental bills, other prescriptions, eye glasses, etc.

Also - you can claim expenses incurred in any 12 month period ending in the tax year. So if you did a round of IVF in Nov 2010 and another in Oct 2011, you can claim both on your 2011 taxes. It is beneficial to lump as much together as possible so you don't have to meet that minimum twice because that first ~$2000 is not deductible.

If you have done ivf and want to claim medical expenses, it may be worth it to talk to a tax specialist and pay the fee for this one year. Unless you know the ins and outs of our income tax system, a pro will undoubtedly find deductions you didn't even know about.

A spreadsheet of appointments and expenses is a great idea. I have to get off my butt and get mine done!!

Wondering if all this is worth the effort? It works out that you'll likely get back about 25% of your expenses in a refund.

My friend ButterflyKiss provided this quote from Laura Bush's book and I think it captures how many of us feel:"The English language lacks the words to mourn an absence... for someone who was never there at all, we are wordless to capture that particular emptiness. For those who deeply want children and are denied them, those missing babies hover like silent, ephemeral shadows over their lives. Who can describe the feel of a tiny hand that is never held?"

CRA sets fixed rates for mileage, and meals. In 2010 they were:

Mileage: $0.52 per km for BC (presuming you live more than 80km from the closest clinic) *Each province has a slightly different rate.
Meals: $17 per meal per person to a max of $51 per day

This thread has been very helpful. I bought one of those accordian style binders with the file dividers in them and have each one labled for different topics. I was told something good to do is for each trip to print off from Google Maps a map of the distance from your house to appointment site as "proof" of KM's. travelled, there and back. So in my binder I have a section for all my maps, recipts, any paperwork from any DR we have to see, prescriptions, parking stubbs...etc. I also have a calander in it with all of our appointment dates, and its also where I keep track of each cycle. I like having all of this documents together in one place nicely sorted!

CRA sets fixed rates for mileage, and meals. In 2010 they were:

Mileage: $0.52 per km for BC (presuming you live more than 80km from the closest clinic) *Each province has a slightly different rate.
Meals: $17 per meal per person to a max of $51 per day

Silverdollar - where do you find the mileage info for each province? I don't seem to find it? You don't have to submit fuel or meal receipts?

You don't have to submit receipts for travel or meals if you use their formula (simplified method) but do need some sort of record of your trips. My spreadsheet with appointment dates was enough.

Are the meals and travel a refundable tax credit, or a non refundable that would only help if you owe tax? Does that make sense?! lol

From what I have been told from a friend who did the IVF 2 years ago she did submit gas and food reciepts. She also submitted hotels, train, and bus passes that they needed to get from point a to point b. I am keeping everything and taking to an accountant and he can tell me what we can use and cant use. Thankfully the accountant we will be going to is my friends father who also did her taxes so she would know!

Oh and one other thing... you MUST keep your original receipts, because the govt no longer accepts the credit card or bank statements... this is something that we were told changed in 2010 tax year (which really makes no sense because how many times do you get a receipt that you can barely ready by the end of the year... I guess it's to make sure what you're claiming is truly an expense from that trip and not a bunch of clothes you bought at Walmart at the same time as you bought some groceries). Luckily I had most of my receipts, except for the ones you get online like for flights (but still had them to print off). FYI, parking expenses are also not taxable. You'll probably find your accountant will just use the 'simple' version that SD stated earlier. I kept our receipts but you do get a bit further ahead to do the simple version (IMO).
Me 42 DH 44 Married since 2005 and have been TTC the whole time. One adoption revocation through the AB govt (son taken back by birth family after 6 days)Multiple failed clomid cyclesMultiple failed home IUI cycles. Two failed IVF cycles (didn't get to retrieval).Pursuit of donor embryos through direct donation.FET with direct donor embryos in Nov 2010 resulted in a BFP!Jan 2011- both empty sacs and m/c has begun. June 2011- Second donor embryo cycle (anonymous donor). BFN.Oct 2011- Third donor embryo cycle (anonymous donor). BFN.Nov 2011- Pursuing private adoption through Christian Adoption Services.May 2012- Officially on the waiting list for CAS.See "About Me" page for specifics on our journey and continued updates.Believing that God WILL answer our prayers for children! He is the one who placed the desire for children in our hearts so we trust that it will happen.... in His time. The message that keeps coming is from Psalm 37:7 "Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for Him". December 2013- God has answered our prayers in a way we truly didn't think was possible- we brought home a little boy and survived the 10-day waiting period, lol. To Him be the glory- the testimony of this little one is amazing!

so for meds and such do you need the cardit card slip receipt? Or is the pharmacy official receipt you get alright? I assumed I'd just need the pharmacy receipt.
