Hoping for some suggestions! I feel like death...

The past few days my one breast has been tender. It's always been hotter than my right breast, since Isaac favors the lefty, so it has high milk productivity. My breast is now throbbing all the time, and hurts even more when he's nursing. It hurts to the touch on the right side, & on the same side where the nipple attaches to the areola is so flipping sore, when the areola is pressed on, you can feel the tissue is more dense/inflamed (probably the size of a marble). By the way, extremely sore to feel that, & it kills me when he nurses.

I'd put him on the other breast, if he wasn't so dramatic, with the gagging & dry heaving! (I sleep feed from that side!)

I'm not sure what to do...the pain is getting ridiculous, but indont think it's an infection. I have no fever, just feel run down, but that could be due to ten thousand other things. The throbbing is really painful, & when he latches on, it feels like he's holding on with teeth, but he's not!

My first thought is that if it's not a blocked duct (doesn't sound like it, that's more localized in my experience and probably something you'd recognize if you've been BFing for a year) it could be mastitis or maybe yeast? I have heard yeast can feel like you have ground glass in your breast. I'd go get checked by a doctor just to eliminate the possibility that it is an infection of some kind. In the meantime, you could try putting warm washcloths or one of those heated beanbag things or something like that on it, see if that helps. I had a really bad blocked duct a little while ago (so bad I felt really gross all over) and I kept heat on it between feedings, then heated it up just before feeding and it unclogged as soon as Calvin started eating. Such a relief!

I hope you're able to get it sorted out quickly - it's never fun to be in that much pain, especially for something you have to do multiple times a day. Keep us posted!

Hope it is nothing serious but I agree you should get it checked out. I had a blocked duct a while back and I just kept massaging and manually expressing while in a warm shower and pop, I actually saw the blockage pop out of the duct and moments later milk was spraying across the shower (it was under so much pressure!). What a relief!

TTC #1: starting in Feb 2005 "unexplained" (immune issues, elevated NK cells, 2 heterozygous MTHFR and 2 heterozygous thrombophilias - Factor XIII and PAI-1 mutations)
me-42, DH-42, married since 1995!
Tried: Naturopath, Chinese herbs, Acupuncture, Homeopathy
4 un-medicated IUI's BFN
IVF # 1 18 eggs retrieved, 16 mature, 8 out of 16 fertilized (1/2 ICSI, half IVF), 5 made it to day 5 blast, transferred two, froze 3
first ever BFP m/c
FET #1 medicated, transferred two, started spotting 2 days later, full blown AF 5 days later (decided I don't react well to Estrace, will do natural frozen next time) BFN
FET #2 natural (but still with progesterone (crinone) support, transferred last blast from IVF #1 BFN
IVF #2 16 eggs retrieved, decided not to do ICSI this time since cycle #1 showed eggs could fertilize on their own, only 3 fertilized! None made it to blast for transfer no transfer! Disaster!
IVF #3 decided to add some repronex to the stims and do all ICSI. 18 eggs, 17 mature and 15 fertilized, 8 made it to day 5 blast. Transferred two blasts, froze 6 BFN
FET#3 added 3 HCG booster shots and doubled up on the crinone to prevent me from spotting early (as I often do), transferred 2 blasts, no spotting but a BFN anyway
FET #4- added ovidral just before my natural ovulation so they could pin point it more accurately with the 36 hour window, HCG shots again, plus double crinone BFN
January 2009 Consult with new RE in Markham - he finds a small septum, resected April 29, 09 - tells me to now try my last two frozen blasts
FET #5 - ET scheduled for June 15 (natural cycle with trigger, HCG booster and crinone) - BFN
On to Plan B- Switch clinic to Markham for
#4 Fresh IVF with IVIg, exploring immune testing - start BCP Sept 20. ER around week of Oct. 25
9 eggs retrieved, 1 immature, 1 fractured. 7 to work with. 4 out of 7 fertilized (Day 3: 1 8 cell grade 1, 2 8 cell grade 2 and 1 morula). Day 5 transferred 1 great blast and 1 morula (1 morula and 1 10 cell did not make it to freezing).
Beta Nov. 11 - BFP! (550) I am in shock!
Issues with spotting, Nov 20, second beta 11,000 and early ultrasound: saw gestational sac and yolk sac in the right place but concern about a cyst or possible ectopic near my ovary as well, 4 more ultrasounds over a 10 day period, last ultrasound on Dec. 2 'cyst' has not grown and baby measuring on target at 7wks, 1day with a heart beat of 153bpm.
Now taking Lovenox due to 2 heterozygous thrombophilias
Ultrasound on Dec. 18 (9 weeks, 5 days) baby on track, hb 167
Ultrasound on Dec. 22 due to extra heavy spotting, baby still measuring on track, hb 167 and dancing
Ultrasound on Jan. 8 (12 weeks, 5 days) baby on track, hb 160, baby doing crunches!
18 week anatomy scan scheduled for Feb. 16 - they lost my blood work for the second part of the IPS so no results for that today (they took blood again) but the 18 week scan went great, baby looked awesome and even gave us a little wave in between sucking her thumb and inspecting her toes. Yes, I said "her" - it's a little girl!
20 week ultrasound at Mt. Sinai and they agree, so far so good.
IPS results are in and they are excellent!
EDD: July 19, 2010
Baby girl arrived at 39 weeks, 2 days! July 14, 2010 3:12 am, weighing 7 pounds even.
May 2013 - The IVF Journey continues...one last try to see if a sibling is in the cards...
Did LIT, IVIg, Lovenox and low dose aspirin. 5 eggs retrieved, 1 immature, 1 fractured, 3 to work with, 2 fertilized with ICSI.
June 5, day 3 transfer of 2 8 cell grade 2 embryos.BFN
April 2014, one very last try - natural IVF with intralipids this time, 2! dominant follicles, 2 mature eggs retrieved, both fertilize with ICSI, day 3 transfer scheduled for April 13, transferred 1 8-cell grade one and 1 6-cell grade one (also using Lovenox and low dose ASA) -BFN, we are really done, not sure if it is now my immune system, or old eggs now too.

Ugh :( That sounds a lot like mastitis to me. Here's some info (for you if you need it, and for anyone else who is reading this now or later on): http://www.babycente...tions/mastitis/

There are some self-help suggestions there until you can see your doctor, but it says you should get it checked out to make sure it hasn't gotten infected. Keep feeding and making sure your milk is flowing is the best thing you can do, and you can take ibuprofen or acetaminophen for the pain. Apparently it can clear up pretty quickly if you catch it early enough and get the proper treatments. It doesn't say what your doctor does if it's not infected, but if it is you'll need antibiotics.

See About Me for full info.

Anyone battle thrush? What worked to clear it up? The antifungal cream did nothing, so we started the Gentian Violet last night. My baby looks like she's stepped off the set of a horror movie. I hope it works fast!

I haven't dealt with it myself, only with a yeast rash on his bum and one under my breasts. I do know that if you're treating her for thrush, you need to treat yourself as well, to make sure you don't get it in your breasts. Or to make sure you're not passing it back and forth and then it never gets cleared up.

Yikes - sorry to hear about your pain, Kellyanne - GO TO YOUR DOCTOR - personally, I love my gynecologist, so I'd go to him - but go to the first person you can get an appt with - so it doesn't get worse and gets better sooner. Hope you are on the mend really soon! It does sound like mastitis - which is supposed to heal quickly.

KA - sorry to hear you are dealing with that :(

Silverdollar - the gentian violet worked for me. It is nasty, huh? Staining EVERYTHING! I had yeast on my nipples. I wouldn't have known - the skin just looked like it was peeling off, but I was very new to breastfeeding and I figured that with a baby sucking on my nipples all the time it was normal. A lactation consultant caught it less than a week after Emily was born. It was caught early enough that Emily didn't get thrush. She did however end up with a yeast infection on her bum (again - I had no idea what it was, just that my poor wee baby's bum was red and looked like the skin was peeling off), For her bum, the most effective thing was a probiotic candagen cream from the health food store. Monostat only cleared her bum to a point, then it didn't get any better until I used the probiotic cream. Also, to try and ward off more yeast - I took a probiotic orally and limited ALL refined foods.
Me: 35 DH:35
Dx: Unexplained
Started ttc September 2006
November 2007 - Initial consult at LifeQuest
January 2008 - Diagnostic testing.
February 2008 - Test results - No problems with DH. Dr. suspected I had a PCOS variant and that I probably wasn't ovulating. Suggested superovulation (injectibles) with or without IUI
Decided to forgo treatment for the time being and focus on improving my health.
March 2008 - October 2009 - LOTS of alternative therapy. You name it, I tried it!
February 2009 - confirmed via cycle monitoring I was now ovulating and my ovaries both look fine. Officially unexplained IF. Hmmm, now what?
Next Steps: Had initial consult with Dr. Virro at Markham Fertility Centre on October 1, 2009. Hysteroscopy/laproscopy performed on February 5, 2010. Post op appointment on March 8, 2010. Found out one small spot of endo removed from uterus and a very tiny septum resected.
Started BCP on March 31, 2010.
First IVF (first anything!) cycle after.
Last BCP April 20th.
Started stims: April 25 (Puregon - varied from 100iu to 42.5iu, Menopur - 75iu, and orgalutron)
ER date - May 5th.
14 retrieved, 11 mature, 7 fertilized - 4 via IVF, 3 via ICSI
3 days past retrieval - 5 8-cell embryos (3 via IVF, 2 via ICSI), 2 lagging 6-cell embryos (1 via IVF, 1 via ICSI)
ET on May 10, 5day past retrieval - tranferred 1 "superb, could sell it on e-bay" embaby - grade 5AB0! 4 more "lovely" totsicles (2 5day, 2 6day). The ivf embies did better than the icsi embies.
Beta - May 21s: BFP! Beta was 507! Still early days, but we're happy to be pg!
Viability scan - June 11. Baby right on track, heartrate of 140bpm, measuring 7weeks 1day at just over 1cm long. HOWEVER, big cyst in my right ovary. Going back for another u/s in two weeks to monitor the cyst.
U/S to monitor cyst - June 24 - cyst shrank slightly. Baby still measuring on track, 9weeks 1day and just over 2cm long, heartrate of 167bpm
12week u/s - July 12 - cyst had shrank to 2cm. Baby looked like a baby! Moving around and flailing arms and legs. Just over 5.5cm long, heartrate of 160bpm. Nuchal scan and nasal bone both looked good. Doctor's appointment went well.
20 week ultrasound and doctors appointment - baby looks good - its a girl :) Test results from IPS test show a 1 in 20,000 risk of a chromosomal abnormality. Placenta is partially covering cervix, doctor will check again at 32 weeks.
26 week doctors appointment - GD test
30 week doctors appointment - got GD test results, I passed. Baby measuring on track, good strong heartbeat :)
32 week doctors appointment - u/s to check placenta position to see if it has been pulled up from my cervix and also to check baby's size

She had the white tongue first and then gave it to me in my nipples. Her bum seems OK, and I don't have it elsewhere. I've never been prone to yeast infections, but i'm taking grapefruit seed extract capsules and eating tons of plain yogurt to help restore the balance. How many days did it take for the gentian violet to work?

Silverdollar--Does your doctor still recommend using genetian violet? http://askdrsears.co...llnesses/thrush I took a really strong probiotic pill taken a few times a day plus coconut oil on my nipples and that cleared it up for baby and I within 2 days, but I started this the first day I noticed any signs of thrush so I'm not sure how quickly it would work with a more advanced case of thrush.

It was the breastfeeding centre at public health and the pharmacist that recommended it as a second step if the antifungal cream didn't work. There was also a list of things to do in terms of washing everything in hot water, soaking in vinegar and exposure to sunlight. I've done the first two, but the last is quite impossible on the west coast in the winter.

Silverdollar-we had thrush in the beginning too, after it cleared from me, babe still had some white in his mouth, but our doctor said as long as it's not bothering him, leave it. We did, took about 3 weeks total to clear. He has also had 2 rounds of diaper yeast, after I was on antibiotics for a uti, but I never had it again on my nipples. I feel your pain, it does get better.

Kellyanne: Glad to hear you got things cleared up. I'm glad it went away so quickly. I'm terrified of getting an infection, but I think I'm less so now that I know you feel better so fast after getting treatment.

SD: Hope the thrush is on its way to clearing up. I have itchy nipples occasionally due to eczema from the lanolin (I have to balance using it to avoid sore nipples and also to avoid the eczema... good times!) and that drives me nuts, I can't imagine also having pain.

See About Me for full info.

Thanks for the help, Ladies! I ended up having a nasty infection, & glad I caught it when I did (thanks to you guys) otherwise I'm sure I would have been down, & I had my sons first birthday party to get ready for! Instead of extreme pain, & the chills yesterday, I had a great day, watching my son run around with a birthday crown on <3

I'm glad you got it figured out and resolved so you could enjoy Isaac's first birthday! I haven't seen pictures of him in ages - and the crown sounds cute - photos please!

How are you doing KellyAnn -was it mastitis

I saw my doctor yesterday and got Nystatin for the baby and a prescription nipple cream for myself -Ahhh some relief.

Glad to hear you found relief! Funny, all these possible issues with breastfeeding that are rarely spoken of/heard of.

I don't know if it would be helpful to you to try (or maybe you already do this?) - I only feed Jonah off of one breast at at time and alternate them - so he empties each one fully at every feeding. Your breasts get used to this schedule pretty quickly and fill up accordingly. Good luck - painful breasts is not fun!

This came up at my breastfeeding support group that I go to in real life. The big thing is that the second they bite you, yell "ow!" loudly (you're aiming to startle them) and have a stern face, and end the feeding session. They need to learn that if they do that, then there's no more eating. You're also supposed to avoid feeding them when they're sleepy since they can often accidentally bite then, but I have no idea how you're supposed to avoid that :P

I find Calvin only bites me when he's just playing around and is done anyway, so he doesn't get upset when I end the session but he is sensitive so I make sure to let him know that it hurts and I'm not happy, and at the very least that he gets startled when he does it. He's now getting his upper teeth so I'm a bit concerned that those are going to cause problems since he'll have uppers and lowers so there's less no-teeth area. There needs to be a new rule that breastfeeding babies have to be late teethers :P He's not even six months (a week today) and he has 5 teeth already, including the two uppers that haven't broken through yet but I can see them coming. :(

See About Me for full info.

I have done the loud "OUCH" with the stern, angry face - I guess I'm usually so nice that when I did this, Jonah started to pout and cry. I then comforted him - but my reaction let him know this was not acceptable. He hasn't tried biting me again since he got his top teeth - it just happened once or twice when he only had the 2 bottom teeth. It was a fear I had in continuing to breastfeed after he got teeth, but he really responded to the yell and stern look (as well as getting him off me).

What ever happened with your wrist? My De Quervain's tendinitis, which is what I was guessing you had, by the symptoms you described, got worse and I'm having surgery in March. Ahhh, the wonders of pregnancy and childbirth! I wouldn't change it for a thing (even with the DQ and not sleeping through the night for 14 months and counting)!
